Chapter 18: Invitation to the Comic Book Store
That morning, Alex had his grade level changed and was placed in the same year as Sheldon.
Principal Tom was very happy to welcome another genius into his school.
"Hi, my name is Alex Coleman."
In class, Alex introduced himself, then went to sit at an empty desk. For some reason, he chose to sit near Sheldon.
Sheldon looked at Alex. He already knew from his mother that Alex was skipping a few grades and was a prodigy just like him.
At that moment, Sheldon felt the need to defend his title as number one genius. He was already preparing to prove his intellect.
The teacher, noticing this, knew it would be a difficult day. Deep down, she just hoped that this new genius didn't have the same quirks as Sheldon.
Luckily, only Sheldon was that special, which made her take a good look at Alex.
Alex didn't care about any of that. In his mind, he could only think of Mia's tearful face from earlier that morning.
The class went on, and then came the break. Alex packed up his things, grabbed his lunchbox, and went straight to the library.
...!
Upon entering the library, he greeted Ms. Sheryl.
"Looks like I guessed right. The new genius who's skipping grades like that Sheldon boy—it's you," Sheryl said with a smile.
Ever since she noticed the books Alex read during lunch breaks, she realized he was special.
Alex just smiled and said nothing. He chose a place to sit and went to grab two books to read.
Now he could read a page with just one glance. So he wouldn't seem strange, he still spent a few seconds on each page.
"That girl came here. Mia was her name, right?"
Hearing her mention Mia, Alex asked subconsciously:
"How was she?"
"She looked very sad. Did something happen between you two?"
"Nothing happened."
Alex didn't want to talk about it. He opened the book and began reading. Realizing he didn't want to talk, Sheryl went back to her own tasks.
At that moment, two figures entered: Sheldon and his new friend, Tam.
Sheldon walked straight to the table where Alex sat, took his usual seat, and started unwrapping his lunch.
Tam, noticing, came a bit shyly.
"Can I sit here?"
Alex looked at him and nodded.
"Go ahead!"
Sheldon, not understanding, looked at his friend confused, wondering why he even had to ask before sitting down.
Tam cheerfully sat and started making conversation.
"Never seen you around before. You transferred from another school?"
"No, he's not. He was in elementary school until recently," Sheldon spoke before Alex could respond.
Even so, Alex chose to explain:
"Nope. Like Sheldon said, I was in elementary, but then it got boring, so I decided to skip a few years."
"Cool! So which of you is smarter?" Tam asked with a grin.
Obviously me, Alex thought to himself, but he stayed silent. He wanted to see how Sheldon would react.
As expected, Sheldon felt provoked and said:
"I am! I answered all the questions in class. He didn't even raise his hand once."
Sheldon lifted his head proudly. Tam gave him a strange look, and Alex just smiled slightly at the corner of his mouth.
Though part of him wanted to argue, he knew it wasn't necessary. He understood Sheldon's ego—big and fragile.
He decided to leave that job to Paige. Truth be told, he really wanted to meet her, but he had to wait for the right moment.
"I've got a lot to learn," Alex said casually.
Tam noticed that only Sheldon cared about that and changed the subject.
"Want to go to the comic book store with me after class?"
Alex was intrigued. In his previous life, he'd never been able to buy those magazines. Maybe this was a good chance to start a collection.
"Sure! I've never been to one. It'd be nice to check out a comic store in this town."
Sheldon got interested too and said he'd go as well. And so, the three of them planned to head to the comic book store after school.
