Chapter 11 - Four Days
Lem sank into the ethereal state.
[Day 1: You are abandoned in Lang Woods, traveling randomly in a northeast direction. Because you are aware that there are no opportunities in that direction, you decide to wait for an hour before traveling in a new direction. You want to eat the faintly spiritual berry in your possession, but you sense that it would be better to wait until you are about to travel…]
With nothing better to do, Lem began to study the details of the forest that were in his vision. He was not expecting anything to happen for the next hour.
A moment later, he heard the sudden noises of the bushes moving and felt a spike of emotions sent by his body.
[The brush is disturbed, causing you to panic.]
Lem’s simulated self turned rapidly, allowing him to see what was happening.
A small figure was distinct in the brush. Its size allowed him to relax.
A moment later, he recognized the beast.
[When you see that the disturbance was caused by a small fox, you relax. The fox watches you, without the intent to leave…]
As the time passed, Lem studied the fox in curiosity. From the direction it was staring, he was sure that it had sensed the berry in his hand.
It was another reminder that he should not retrieve items from the simulation easily.
First there had been a rabbit, and now there was a fox.
Perhaps the small fox was harmless enough, but there were many beasts that would not be pleasant company.
[You realize that you have waited for an hour, and you eat the berry, ignoring the bitter taste.]
Lem waited in anticipation, as the spiritual energy began to fill his body.
What was the effect of eating two spiritual berries within two hours from each other?
The energy permeated his body, giving him a comfortable feeling.
A moment later, the energy had finished dispersing.
Lem noticed that his mind felt slightly more alert, and his body was in slightly less pain, but there was not much of a difference otherwise.
[You set off in a southeast direction. The fox follows you for a few minutes before running off…]
As Lem noticed the fox was no longer around, he felt as though his guess had been correct. The fox had only been interested in the spiritual berry.
His mind was more at ease without a beast following him.
[After walking for some time, you rest in place for an hour…
Once you recover, you continue traveling, resting intermittently…
Night falls, and you hide in a partially concealed place, behind bushes. You lack the security of the simulation and are scared of the unknown. You fall asleep with some difficulty…]
[Day 2: You feel weaker due to the evil power consuming your vitality…
You eat from your rations and fall asleep…]
…
[Day 4: You feel weaker due to the evil power consuming your vitality…]
Lem was walking through the forest when there was a sudden explosion of movement.
The world went dark, and he was thrown into confusion.
Is that the end of the simulation?
What happened?
[A blur flashes before your eyes and your chest explodes. You are unable to identify what attacked you before you die.]
[Simulation ends.]
Lem was in his original place in the forest when the memories rushed into his mind.
The process of assimilation was easier than the previous two times.
When he recovered, he was still confused by the nature of his death.
I died so soon?
Lem decided he would pick a different direction for the next simulation.
[Choose one of three rewards:
Option 1: peak cultivation from lifetime (Day 1 cultivation)
Option 2: comprehension from lifetime
Option 3: nothing]
Lem remembered that the second consumption of the berry provided less of an effect than the first time.
From this, he could determine that his current solution to staving off death was temporary. Eventually, the energy from the berry would become less significant.
Option One, Lem thought with intent.
Energy surged within his chest.
