Chapter 306: "Going the Wrong Way, All Efforts Are Wasted.
"No matter which family clan you're in, even if it were the Zhang family or the Wang family of Jingjiu City, entities of that stature, you would be someone they'd train with all their might. Do you understand?"
"How many 'Unique Level' Supernatural Occupations are there in this world?"
"Such a huge opportunity was right in front of you, and you just gave it up!!!"
Doctor Gou was frustrated, his heart aching so much that his whole body contorted: "You're driving me mad, really driving me mad. Why does heaven always give opportunities to those who don't treasure them?"
"Hmm."
The Black Doctor murmured with his head lowered, "I had always planned to level up to 20 and then switch my profession to 'Surgical Maniac,' the Unique Supernatural Occupation, and become a powerful Combat Power for the 'Tomb Guardians,' charging to the forefront."
"After all, I have this bloodline."
"But then, on the wastelands of Fengtian City, Miao killed the chief of the Events Bureau, and one of his subordinates charged at Miao, screaming. The subordinate was also a Flame Holy Body, extremely rare, yet his fate was to be left lying forever on that wasteland, cut down by a burst from Miao's gun."
"Since that moment, my perspective began to change."
"A Flame Holy Body is just as rare as my Heavenly Doctor Bloodline, but what of it? He was still cut down on the wasteland by a burst of gunfire. Even if your Combat Power is immense, could it be more formidable than Miao's?"
"If I were more powerful than Miao, then who would be the brother, him or me?"
Hungry Monkey whispered into Chen Miao's ear: "That statement verges on the arrogantly rebellious!"
The Black Doctor didn't hear Hungry Monkey's murmuring and simply raised his head with a serious expression, looking towards everyone: "So since then, I've realized my strengths and talents lie in artistry. Why should I cast aside what I am skilled at and chase after a Combat Power that wouldn't be of much help to Miao or to the 'Tomb Guardians,' and abandon my most adept medical skills?"
"Even if it is a Unique Supernatural Occupation, so what?"
"It's useless to me, useless to the Tomb Guardians."
"What Miao needs from me is a doctor skilled in medical arts who can be critical in key moments, not an assassin whose Combat Power is just so-so. I am extremely clear about my own role. If I want to maintain my place within the 'Tomb Guardians,' I must continue perfecting my medical skills, not my Combat Power."
"Everyone wants to be at the front, basking in flowers and applause, but surely someone has to stay behind, amidst blood and blade wounds, to save everyone's life, right?"
"..."
"..."
As his words fell, a golden glow surfaced on the Black Doctor's face, making him shine as if he stood in sunlight, incredibly dazzling.
The people around him were somewhat baffled, standing still, not understanding. Miao simply asked you what level you were, how did you suddenly come up with such a speech?
Isn't that a bit abrupt?
But soon.
A uniform round of applause rang out.
Doctor Gou clapped emotionlessly with both hands, making a clattering sound. What could he say? This kid had put himself on the moral high ground, and without doing anything, made it seem like he had sunk to the moral low ground.
Absolute political correctness.
He felt he might have misjudged the kid. The reason the kid had initially become a Black Doctor may not have been because of a kind heart, but because he was completely unaware of the lucrative paths being a doctor could offer.
Otherwise, the kid definitely wouldn't have become a Black Doctor.
Zhou Shen also looked thoughtfully at the Black Doctor, feeling that he had a point. Regarding Combat Power, no matter how strong they became, they could never surpass Miao. Therefore, they had to clarify their roles within the team and ensure they were irreplaceable.
For instance, 'Surgical Maniac' might be a Unique Supernatural Occupation, but with so many combatants around Miao, this no longer counted as unique.
Whereas 'Doctor,' although a common Lifestyle Occupation, was the only medical practitioner around Miao, making that truly unique.
In other words.
It's better to be the only one by Miao's side than to be the Unique one in the world.
This was a pure gambler's move, almost binding his fate entirely to Miao. If one day he were to split from Miao, or if Miao fell, the future would be pretty much set, with no backup plan in place.
...
Chen Miao, however, smiled and nodded. He quite liked this lad but now wasn't the time for extended discussion. Instead, he turned his head to Doctor Gou: "Doctor Gou, he started with you. After the flood subsides, you take some extra care to see what he needs for leveling up. Help him level up quickly."
"I am also curious to see what kind of 'Domain' the first Lifestyle Occupation to reach max level will possess."
"Good luck."
Of course, he hadn't forgotten the purpose of coming out here, which was to look for the newly built restrooms. By now, the local government had received orders and sent him all the locations of the new restrooms.
...
Three hours later.
Chen Miao and his companions were sitting tiredly on a bench at the street corner. In the past few hours, they had visited all newly built restrooms. The local government was even quicker to act, all potential loopholes had been blocked.
And blocked very thoroughly.
There wouldn't be a slip-up, not even a trace.
They witnessed with their own eyes the construction crew using rebar to encase an entire bathroom, and then directly pouring in the concrete.
Accompanied by a pouring sound,
massive amounts of concrete cascaded down from the ceiling of the bathroom. Not just sealing up the hole thoroughly, but filling every corner of the bathroom to the brim. The local government's response had been much faster than theirs.
By the time they arrived,
what they saw was the construction site, and there was no need for an investigation.
"It seems like they don't need us at all,"
Hungry Monkey cautiously and hesitantly said, "The local government has reacted much faster than us, and their handling of it is much more decisive. Do you think there's a possibility that Elder Wang didn't send us here expecting us to work miracles?"
"But was worried that if we stayed there, we would cause destruction?"
"Uh..."
Zhou Shen fell silent on the spot with an odd expression on his face. He had never considered this possibility before, but hearing it now made it sound damnably reasonable. It actually seemed to make a hell of a lot of sense!
"No."
Chen Miao shook his head, "The Federation's guess must have been wrong. The physical entity of this portal isn't likely a newly built bathroom in some southern city. Based on the local government's efficiency—"
"In another three hours at most, all newly built bathrooms across those hundreds of cities will have been sealed off snugly."
"If by then, the hole in the sky above The Land of Extreme Cold is still not plugged, it will mean we've been heading in the wrong direction."
"Wrong direction, all efforts wasted."
...
Swiftly—
Another three hours passed.
By now, it was five in the afternoon. According to the latest information from the Federation, all newly built bathrooms in over a hundred cities had been blocked off, but so far, there were no signs of the hole being blocked.
On the contrary, the flow rate of the floodwaters had increased slightly.
However, those floodwaters continued to vanish upon touching the ground, causing no impact on human society for the time being.
Chen Miao had been skeptic all along. With the temperatures in The Land of Extreme Cold, shouldn't the floodwaters freeze before hitting the ground?
But that wasn't the immediate concern. The most pressing issue was that the Federation's guess had been wrong.
"The guess was wrong?"
Hungry Monkey furrowed his brow. "Actually, I think the logic is sound. Why would it be wrong? Urine with high sugar content means the people producing it eat a lot of sweets, right? It should be the south, isn't that correct?"
"There's nothing like rust in the urine; it definitely suggests the bathrooms are newly built."
"Where could there be a problem?"
"I don't know."
Chen Miao shook his head, "But the Federation has thought of a new method. They're going to dump thousands of different chemical agents into the sewer systems of thousands of cities in the south."
"These agents will alter the water quality when diluted."
"Then, by analyzing the floodwaters that fall from the sky above The Land of Extreme Cold, they can determine which city the black hole physically resides in. For instance, the x-12 agent, just a short bottle of it, can turn the water in a city's sewers dark red."
"If the water flowing down from The Land of Extreme Cold turns dark red, that means the entity of the hole is in that city."
"Sounds like a good plan," Zhou Shen nodded. "But wouldn't this method contaminate the underground water quality? Isn't this essentially a biochemical weapon?"
"There would likely be some level of contamination,"
Chen Miao glanced at a pop-up on his wristwatch, "But for the Federation, if they can stop a flood that could destroy the world, all for the cost of compromising some underground water quality, then it's incredibly worthwhile." Find your next read at empire
"Yet I believe the bigger issue is that city sewer systems don't interconnect. In other words, an agent released downstream can't affect upstream, and there's no 'upstream' or 'downstream' within a city sewer system."
"If we have to talk about 'upstream' and 'downstream,' the upstream is on the surface, and the downstream is underground. With countless upstreams, how can the Federation make a single agent affect an entire city's sewer system? That's the real problem, but since the Federation proposed this plan, they must have a way to solve it."
"But that's not what we need to worry about now."
Chen Miao's expression turned grave as he looked at his wristwatch pop-up and enunciated, "We might have a bit of trouble."
"Trouble?"
Hungry Monkey looked around somewhat bewildered, "At this time, who would have the leisure to trouble us? Even a villain shouldn't be this dedicated, right?"
"The end of the world is upon us, shouldn't they be focused on saving themselves rather than diligently causing trouble for the protagonist?"
