Flying is cool, it's exhilarating, indescribable. There aren't enough words to describe what it feels like to fly above the clouds. Although, it's probably all about the vocabulary, which I'll admit honestly, is very sparse. Another thing is that I don't need it, I'm not writing a book.
Another thing is that it is very easy to forget in the sky, not paying attention to time. This intoxicating feeling of complete freedom from any fetters is unforgettable. Having such opportunities it is very difficult to give them up, but I did not intend to. Everything suits me just fine.
Landing on the balcony of my apartment, I smoothed my hair and calmly walked to the decanter on the bedside table. Pouring water into the glass, he drank it in one gulp, glancing at his watch. Nine o'clock in the morning, which meant the meeting should have started by now.
- I'm late, aren't I? - I stretched out indifferently, putting the glass back down.
With a snort, I took a leisurely step towards the exit. A familiar corridor with no strangers and a spacious lift straight ahead. I pressed the call button and waited, watching the red numbers above the lift entrance approaching my floor. I didn't have to wait long, just a couple of seconds, and then the lift doors slid open.
- Good morning, Starlight. - I smiled when I saw the girl in front of me, looking at me in surprise.
- Hello. I mean, hello!" she said in an excited voice, even raising her hand in greeting.
She immediately took a step back to make room for me, though it wasn't necessary in the spacious stall. I only mentally shook my head and made my way inside, standing on her right side. The doors closed and we silently began to walk upstairs.
- Nervous? - I asked, looking at her reflection in front of me with interest.
- A little bit.
- Don't be, they're all simple people.... when it comes to behaviour. It's a bit hard to say that about Noir, but only at first glance. Did you know he can play the piano?
- Did you? - Starlight was surprised. Black Noir was too taciturn and secretive, and it was almost impossible to find out about his skills beyond the common knowledge.
- Absolute. However, he only played when he was in the mood, which meant he rarely played.
- Too bad. - The blonde sighed, realising that she wouldn't be seeing this anytime soon.
- And yes, it's best not to be late for the first meeting.
- Sorry, sir. - The girl faltered.
- Come on, it's just Homelander. - He waved his hand, looking at her with a smile. She smiled back.
Meanwhile, the lift stopped smoothly on the right floor and the doors opened. I stepped out of the lift and headed straight for the meeting room, Starlight following silently behind me. The massive iron doors opened quietly before them, revealing a view of the assembled 'heroes'.
Black Noir, the one who attracted the most attention in the bright hall, because of the all-black suit. Silent enough to be mistaken for a mute. The most efficient of the Seven, as he slaughters criminals in packs. Doesn't smoke or drink, doesn't like noisy company. Abilities: super strength, endurance and regeneration. The only drawback: absolutely loyal to Vaught.
The next one was Blink, sitting in glasses and a loose grey cloth robe. Why? - the uninformed will ask. And the answer is that he didn't need a suit at all. The thought once crossed your mind, does the Invisible Man need to be naked to be invisible? Well, the answer is yes.
In his normal state, he's just a simple middle-aged man. Possesses invisibility and invulnerability during this state. Well, almost. For the most part, Mr Raspy cares about money, and he had no intention of putting himself on the line for the company.
Train-A, joined the team recently, about four years ago. Before that he was Mr Marathon, also a speedster, only in red. He was now retired, a well-deserved retirement. Still, Bartholomew was a really decent member of the team, unlike his current replacement. At least he didn't run through people. Though he was not without his faults.
Now, Train-A has the same abilities as any speedster. He's currently so fast that he uses the whole train for training. That's why he got his nickname. He earned his place literally by sweat and blood, winning the Mr Marathon race. Although that competition was partly staged, but both ran at full strength. The only drawback: addiction to the superhero doping drug V. But loyal to me personally.
Next up, Depth. A guy with good looks, wearing a green scaly suit. The most insecure member of the team. Can talk to fish, swim fast and deep. Standard strength and toughness included.
Considers himself a freak, due to the gills on his body. The thing is, he was mocked by a Homelander when he saw them. And then it went public, not without the help of a blond guy. Perfect Aryan just saw Deep as a threat to his status as the most popular hero, since he had a lot of groupies. Since then, the guy doesn't show his bare torso in public. Homelander has never denied himself the pleasure of being reminded of this flaw in Depth. Devoted to Vaught, but without fanaticism.
And finally, Queen Maeve. A beautiful red-haired girl in natural armour. Though it should be noted that this armour was not far from the title of "bra armour". But it was compensated by the fact that the girl's body could withstand much more than the armour could.
In character, she was a bitch, if you look at it superficially. In fact, she really loved her job, the part of it where ordinary citizens should be saved. Wanted to save the world, but was disappointed to realise that the world didn't need her. Hence the alcoholism. Abilities: standard strength, speed, stamina, and the ability to fly. Though her flight is not fast, even a simple car is faster. She remains neutral, fearful of the Homelander and distrustful of Wout.
- I apologise for my tardiness," he said, looking around at the assembled heroes, smiling welcomingly and pointing to the blonde. - I'm pleased to introduce you to the newest member of our team, Starlight.
- Hello. - The girl smiled, waving her hand in greeting.
There was a chorus of voices that responded to the newcomer's greeting. Black Noir waved back, but Maeve just ignored her, eyeing me suspiciously.
- Unfortunately, I haven't prepared a speech," I walked to my seat, right in the middle, and sat down in the chair. - So let's start without unnecessary greetings.
- Good, let's get straight to the main topic. - Mrechniy took the floor, sitting in his glasses, while being invisible.
It looked funny, but there was nothing wrong with his eyesight. It was more of a need to know where his eyes were.
- Those bastards leaked a pirated copy of my last film three weeks before the premiere! - Not shying away from his words, he continued, reading something on his tablet. - And you can't walk down Fifth Avenue without running into a stall selling unlicensed Homelander toys. Blatant copyright infringement that's costing the company billions of dollars, and that's money out of our pockets. We each have what, four per cent?
- What the fuck?! We all got four per cent? - Train-A was outraged.
With his two per cent, the outrage was justified, as everyone in the team should ideally be paid equally. But capitalism dictates its own rules. So Homelander gets a full ten per cent of the profits on everything related to him personally and two per cent each on Seven. It's the same situation with Maeve and Noir. Blink and Deep are getting four each, and Starlight doesn't even have a cent yet.
- Better lawyers, too. - Maeve said, holding up a glass of whiskey.
- Are we done fighting? - Asked, causing everyone to fall silent. - Great first meeting. You've shown yourselves to be at your best. Now, let's get to the point: who did you save this week?
Deep raised his hand uncertainly, but immediately lowered it. Sighing, he only rolled his eyes, the guy was getting scooped up too much. Looking at him, he nodded, giving him his word.
- I saved six people. - Deepness was enthusiastic.
- Drowning?
- Yeah. The guy's kind of deflated.
- That's all you're good for. - Maeve whispered, though everyone could hear her.
Deepness pressed his lips together as Train-A covered his mouth with his hand to keep from smiling.- Not bad, keep up the good work. - He smiled, ignoring Maeve's words.
- Thanks. - Nodded gratefully at the boy.
- Next up, Black Noir...
All in all, it had been routine and quite good, though Starlight couldn't boast much in the way of accomplishments. It was forgivable for her, but it seemed to leave a residue. It ended with another whimper from Mretya about the lost money. Next it was time to see for myself what Starlight could do. Hopefully she wouldn't disappoint me.
