Chapter 16: Chapter 7.1: An Unexpected Heroine
By the third day at Yingnan High, Shi Mo was already beginning to draw attention.
She kept a low profile, barely spoke in class, and never raised her hand. Yet people were noticing her. With her clean features, lean build, and detached air, she gave off the aura of a mysterious transfer student—someone others were curious about, but too wary to approach.
After all, she sat next to Fu Yunshen.
That alone made her untouchable.
During lunch break, Bei Ling invited her to eat with a few other students in the cafeteria.
Shi Mo was hesitant at first, but knew better than to isolate herself entirely. Part of blending in meant forming connections—not too deep, but just enough.
The school cafeteria was spacious and modern, with several food counters offering everything from traditional Chinese dishes to Western fast food. Students wandered about in groups, chatting and laughing.
As they queued for food, Bei Ling nudged her. "You've gotten popular fast. Half the girls in Class 12 are asking about you."
Shi Mo raised an eyebrow. "That so?"
Bei Ling giggled. "You have that whole 'cold, quiet, smart guy' vibe going. It's a killer combination. Though I think some of them are just jealous you sit next to Fu Yunshen."
Shi Mo didn't respond.
She had no interest in gossip—or in being admired.
Not when the mission was far from complete.
They sat down with their trays at a table near the window. Shi Mo's plate was simple: rice, a boiled egg, stir-fried vegetables, and a bowl of miso soup.
While they ate, a commotion broke out near the entrance.
Several students turned to look.
A girl had just entered the cafeteria—tall, elegant, with long flowing hair and porcelain skin. She wore a slightly customized version of the uniform and moved with a kind of effortless grace.
The students began whispering:
"Bei Xuanyu's here."
"She's so pretty…"
"She's the school flower, right?"
Shi Mo looked up.
Bei Xuanyu.
The name triggered a memory from the manga.
Bei Xuanyu had been the original heroine of Dark Night Chronicles. Her character was described as beautiful, brave, and kind—a classic light-in-the-darkness figure. She was also a key support to Fu Yunshen in the original storyline, often risking herself to protect him.
She was supposed to be the one who gradually thawed his heart.
But the twist in the comic had come when the female villain—Shi Mu—entered the picture, bringing chaos and conflict that eventually derailed Bei Xuanyu's relationship with the protagonist.
Now, seeing her in person, Shi Mo couldn't deny it.
She really did look like the perfect female lead.
