Chapter 278: Animals Similar to Each other? [Bonus]
Lillian stared at Marionette's face, who continued to stare at her expectantly. Then, she watched as the Assassin gestured towards the corpse around them, urging her to try what she had just suggested.
"They're fresh, Lillian. Though, not alive, I'm still sure they can yield some result to this experiment."
"I... Yeah, alright. Maybe, it might work."
Lillian raised her liquid arm, causing it to separate into countless translucent and flexible strings of water that wiggled like tentacles.
Then, they darted towards each individual corpse and began drawing residue vitality from them. Lillian, who wasn't very hopeful, asked the woman something off-topic:
"Hey... Did you change the pain settings again? I feel like this is definitely more than 75%."
Marionette, staring at her, shrugged with an innocent look on her face, causing the white-haired girl to give her a suspicious look. She eventually sighed, knowing that the woman most likely tinkered with it.
Feeling lazy to stand, she crouched and settled herself onto the blood-soaked ground, which caused Marionette's face to twitch.
"It's dirty, Lillian."
Lillian shrugged nonchalantly at her words, finding it to be unneeded.
"Does it matter? It's not like it'll carry over to the real world—"
Just as Lillian was about to finish her sentence, she felt a slight tingle in her stump. It was both itchy and strange. She recognised the itchiness from her past history of regeneration.
Glancing down at her arm, she found that within her stump, a white and hard material began to grow at a casual rate, followed by muscles. It wasn't fast in the slightest.
Soon enough, she ran out of vitality to parasitise off of, leading her to have half of her arm with no skin but muscle and bones.
Fortunately, her lingering healing had decided to cover her wound with skin, preventing her from bleeding out.
Lillian gave a small hum at this sight, somewhat satisfied with the result. Perhaps she should listen to Marionette's suggestions more often.
Thinking something along the lines of this, she paused before thinking:
'I always do, don't I?'
Shaking her head, she pushed herself back to her feet.
She then pointed forward before looking back towards her girlfriend and asking:
"Let's keep on moving. After clearing this place, could you help me with training my reaction speed?"
Marionette tilted her head, "Your reaction speed? Sure. I see no issues with that."
***
BANG!
Lillian immediately ducked at the loud sound of a gun firing, widening her eyes at what Marionette had chosen as her choice of teaching.
Standing far away from her, Marionette stood with the black revolver aimed at her with a nonchalant light as she kept a steady hold on the grip and a finger on the trigger.
"You're using that to help me—?!"
"You should focus behind you."
Lillian immediately twisted her body to the side, trying to dodge the bullet that had ricocheted back to destroy her. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to dodge it completely, for it tore through her right shoulder.
Lillian winced at the sharp pain and the burning pain that followed. She circulated her mana and transformed her entire shoulder down to her arm into water.
Marionette, watching as she did this, tilted her head with a calm expression, dodging the bullet that shot by her face and hit the pure white wall behind her.
The bullet then rebounded off of the wall, darting towards Lillian's figure with an even higher speed compared to before.
Lillian leaned her body to the side—
SWOOP!
—Narrowly avoiding the deadly bullet as it passed by her cheek, cutting and scalding.
They carried on this training for an hour or so. In this period, Lillian had died countless times, but of course, always came back. However, the thing was...
"Can't we have a break in between?!"
Lillian yelled, widening her eyes as she was targeted by more than one bullet.
Marionette, dodging her own bullets as well, shook her head and stated:
"No. Don't let up. Keep up your guard. Push yourself more, Lillian."
"B-but! This is a bit too much!"
***
After Lillian's intense training to better her reaction speed, the two left the simulation and took a wander through the realm hand-in-hand.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry I didn't tell you beforehand." Lillian had a crooked smile as she held her phone to her ear, listening as the words of a certain Heroine bursted into her ear.
Apparently, Millis had been saving a seat for her, Marionette and Veronica. And since they didn't come, she garnered a lot of judging stares.
Not only that but she was also ignored, for Lillian had her phone on silent the entire time.
"Haaa..." Lillian sighed, continuing to tell Millis what was going on and even teased about the date she was on with Marionette.
After they finished their call, both she and the black-haired woman stopped at a dessert store and bought a pair of ice cream—vanilla and chocolate.
Lillian held her waffle cone, staring at her vanilla ice cream with glittery eyes as she licked it. Holding one side of her face, she gave a satisfied moan.
"Man... Its been so long since I had something sweet!"
Marionette, who was walking beside her, raised an eyebrow at the girl before smiling teasingly:
"A long time? Was I perhaps not sweet enough yesterday?"
Lillian stiffened, immediately turning her face towards the Assassin beside her, who continued to stare at her playfully before tasting her chocolate ice cream.
Lillian rolled her eyes.
"Not what I meant..." Turning away, She rubbed the gap between her brows.
She then grinned broadly.
Turning her face back to the woman, she said:
"And if you need to know, you were extremely sweet."
Marionette glanced at the girl before pulling her attention back to her ice cream. Although her expression was stoic and indifferent, that couldn't be said for the grip she had on the girl's hand, which became tighter.
As they continued to wander around the realm, they eventually came upon a park with swings.
Lillian, swinging on one, asked the Assassin beside her with a curious expression:
"A cat or dog? Which one do you like more?"
Marionette held the chains of the swing as she watched Lillian swing up and down. She held a finger to her chin, thinking deeply about the girl's question.
"What breed?"
"Ehh... Just in general."
"Just in general...?" She raised her eyes towards the sky, which had turned an orange tint, "I suppose cats in a casual sense and... Dogs in more active places."
As she said this, a slow thought popped inside her mind.
Looking towards Lillian, she said:
"However, nowadays, I've come to find another species of animal more appealling. Could I tell you?"
Lillian slowed down, using the back of her shoes as brakes as she came to a stop. She stared at her girlfriend with a raised eyebrow before nodding slowly.
"Sure."
Marionette raised her hand and gestured for the girl to lean in.
Lillian, shifting a bit on the swing, leaned the side of her ear towards the woman before feeling the Assassin's hand grip the other side of her face and turning it.
Then...
She felt a familiar sensation meet her lips, followed by a familiar scent and taste.
And...
Also, the familiar sight of Marionette's attractive eyes looking into hers.
She watched as the woman pulled back and whispered:
"I've come to like rabbits... And especially the one right next to me~..."
Lillian blushed, flustered. She brushed the woman's hand off of her face before scooching away from the woman.
She took a few shy glances at the woman with puckered lips and eventually murmured:
"S-... Smooth, as always... Are you still reading that dang seduction book?"
Marionette tilted her head.
"Of course. Rereading, more specifically."
"I-I see..."
"So. What do you like more? Cats or dogs?" Marionette asked, causing Lillian to snap out of her blush.
Lillian thought deeply before answering:
"Cats... Yeah, definitely cats."
"Oh? Any particular reason?"
Seeing that the Assassin was curious, Lillian saw a way to get back at her. She wasn't going to always be on the receiving end, after all.
She gestured for the woman to lean in, causing the Assassin to blink at her with a teasing smile. Of course, she leaned in regardless, curious to see what Lillian was going to do.
But.
What she expected didn't happen.
Marionette drifted her eyes up, staring at the wrist of the hand on her head, which was gently patting and stroking the top of her scalp.
She then turned her eyes back to Lillian, watching as she opened her mouth:
"Because they remind me a lot of you. And... I really like you! So, by that logic, that means I like cats more than dogs, right?"
Marionette widened her eyes, staring at Lillian's radiant smile that seemed to always light up her day.
She then turned her face slightly down as a warm expression crossed across her face.
"I... See... I guess we both like animals similar to each other, huh?"
"Seems like it! Hehe..."
