Chapter 271: Marionette is... Shaken?
Lillian raised an eyebrow at this. Why was the woman's eyes shaking? Where was she looking for her eyes to be like that? And... Why did it seem like she was... Scared?
Lillian turned her eyes to the side, looking far off to the distance and down a stone path. Her eyes narrowed on a tall figure cloaked in a dark hood with ragged edges.
'Who... Is that?'
Lillian thought, wondering who the suspicious individual was. Could it be some traveller from outside the Academy Realm? And why is it that she had never met this person before?
Lillian stiffened.
She had never met this person before.
This added an entirely new layer of danger and mystery to the person, who suddenly took a step forward in an almost robotic manner as their stiff body moved forward.
As they slowly made their way over to them, Lillian couldn't help but glance back towards her girlfriend, finding her frozen in place and even... Shivering slightly?
This was... A first...
She then suddenly felt the woman pull herself away from her before quickly bowing down to a 90-degree angle, showing complete respect to the individual far away from them.
Well...
Who should've been far away from them.
Lillian turned her eyes back to the figure in the far distance, only to find them right before the two.
Lillian flinched, immediately stumbling back at the sudden appearance of the person before staring towards Marionette, who had become completely submissive.
She then watched as the individual pulled their arm from under their cloak. This caused Lillian to reveal a look of shock on her face.
The arm of the individual was... Not human. It was fully made of metal and moved by cogs inside it as though it was a prosthetic with an intentional steampunk aesthetic.
And inside the hand of the machine arm was a small black orb, which they dropped to the ground, letting it shatter and—
SWOOSH!
—Envelop all three of them within a dome.
Lillian's eyes trembled as she became flustered. Her eyes darted around her surroundings, finding herself to be in a world of featureless darkness that was filled with definite silence.
Lillian knew where she was...
She quietly murmured:
"The Orb of Silence...?"
It was an item that trapped someone within a fragile world that appeared as a black dome on the outside. It would basically negate all kinds of noise from escaping out.
It was simply just a soundproofed meeting room.
'But why... Why are we in here?'
Lillian turned towards Marionette, finding her still bent over 90 degrees with a shivering body as the person looked down at her, their face hidden under their hood.
Lillian's mind couldn't help but race as she tried to come up with any sort of ideas about the person. Who were they? And why did they cause Marionette to act like a frightened cat?
'A high-ranking official? Someone she knows? A... Family member?"
She listed the possible vague identity of the person in hopes of possibly being able to piece it together. However, she would have to put that on hold, for the person's voice rang out.
And...
It was awfully robotic and scratchy... Like it came out of a poorly designed and damaged speaker.
"Stat-... us report?"
It was a man's voice and one that held not even a sliver of warmth. Something that was very similar to how Marionette had sounded at the start of the year.
'Status report?' Lillian muttered inside her mind. She was even more curious and interested in the man's identity.
She looked towards Marionette, finding her opening her mouth and answering in a firm but slightly shaky voice:
"It... Louis Mana Academy has been going well. Good responses from professors. Assignments turned in on time. Made a friend and acquaintance—"
The man pushed out both his arms from under his cloak, revealing them to also be mechanical.
They then raised them to the edges of their hood, pulling it down to also reveal a mechanical head. This person... was completely robotic.
'A robot!?' Lillian screamed inside her mind, finding the identity of the man even more shocking and mysterious.
And what was even more confusing and mysterious about the man... Robot? Was that they seemed to be running entirely on cogs and ancient technology belonging to a steampunk genre.
She then watched as the robot pushed out its hand towards Marionette and asked in a glitched voice:
"Re-... port card..."
It curled its fingers repeatedly, gesturing for her to hand it over.
Marionette's expression twisted at his request for her report card, which... Hadn't arrived yet and were said to be coming after their exams.
"It... Hasn't been put together yet... Lord Roselle..."
Lillian, who was standing off to the side, widened her eyes. Her gaze flickered between the robot and her girlfriend.
Her eyes then landed back on the robot with a frightened and... strangely excited look in her eyes.
This was the Roselle Family's Head, Marek!?
The robot slowly lowered his hand back under his cloak. Although his face was still, due to it being mechanical and unexpressive, Lillian knew he was slightly irritated.
And this was confirmed as she heard him click his tongue.
"... Th-... they're slow... When are y-... you getting it?"
"After finishing the exams that are coming in a few days, sir..."
"... I see... Now answer this next que-... question."
Marionette rose her head, staring at the robot's face as it slowly turned towards Lillian, who took an unconscious step back.
The robot's eyes twirled and twisted as they stared at her with interest and also curiosity.
He then muttered with a cold and calculating voice as he scrutinised her from head to toe:
"Wh-... what relationship do you have with this wo-... woman?"
Marionette stiffened, glancing towards Lillian, who had also stared back at her. Her lips stretched into a thin and shaky line as she wondered and thought about how to respond to her father.
That was until...
