chapter 141 - Throbbing Vein of Darkness
Creak!
We stepped into the old Western-style house.
Just like the garden outside, the inside of the house was coated in thick white frost—even though it was the middle of summer.
“Fuma-senpai, do you know where that snow woman yokai is hiding?”
Hearing my question, Fuma-senpai slowly shook her head.
“Her presence is so massive, I can’t pinpoint it. Looks like we’ll have to check every room in this place.”
“I see.”
I nodded and took a step toward the first-floor hallway.
Crunch.
The sound of snow underfoot was followed by a chill climbing up through my soles.
Even though it was broad daylight outside, the inside of the Western-style house was shrouded in shadow, as if dusk had already fallen.
When I asked why, Fuma-senpai explained that the house was filled with intense yin energy.
Apparently, it was a straight-up supernatural phenomenon.
We began exploring the interior of the house, following the creaky wooden corridor.
“Doesn’t look like it’s been abandoned for that long.”
The previous occupants’ belongings were still scattered around the house.
A luxurious leather sofa, a grandfather clock, a solid wood table, and even a desk.
Just from a quick glance, you could tell that most of it was high-end.
“My grandfather told me this place used to be the villa of some influential family. Their daughter, who had a chronic illness, moved into this mountain villa for treatment. But she didn’t recover and ended up dying here. Not long after she passed, the snow woman began haunting the place.”
“I see.”
As I looked around the living room, I noticed something that looked like a family photo.
A middle-aged man in a suit, a woman in a dress, and between them, a girl with a pale complexion.
It was probably the daughter who died in this house.
“Kim Yu-seong, come take a look at this.”
“Huh?”
I turned around at Fuma-senpai’s call.
“It’s blood. Looks like it’s been there a long time.”
Sure enough, there was a dark crimson stain on the wooden floor.
I crouched beside Fuma-senpai and asked,
“Whose blood do you think it is?”
“Maybe some idiot who came here without knowing what they were getting into. Or maybe it was one of our village’s ninja.”
The blood trail stretched from the living room to a window in the hallway.
Judging by the broken glass, whoever was wounded probably escaped through here.
There wasn’t much else to learn, so we decided to check out the rest of the house.
The first floor had a foyer hallway, a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and one bathroom.
Aside from the Western-style design, the layout was similar to a typical Japanese home.
What struck me most as we walked around was that everything looked clean—like it had just been used yesterday.
I wondered if it was because of the pervasive cold, but I couldn’t say for sure.
After a full sweep of the first floor, one thing was clear—the snow woman wasn’t here.
“Guess it’s time to head upstairs.”
“Right.”
Fuma-senpai nodded and led the way back through the hallway.
The stairs leading to the second floor were covered in a layer of frost. One wrong step and we could easily slip, so we had to tread carefully.
Fuma-senpai began climbing first.
I followed close behind.
About halfway up—
Zzzzt!
Suddenly, there was a crackling sound, like something burning, from Fuma-senpai’s direction.
I looked up, wondering what had happened, and saw her mutter with a frustrated expression.
“Tch. A barrier, huh.”
…Can’t believe I’m hearing that line live.
Well, I’m sure she was being completely serious.
Fuma-senpai pulled out a half-burnt talisman from her pocket and tossed it aside, then drew Raikirimaru from her waist.
“Hmph!”
She gave it one swift slash—and the overwhelming force that had blocked the stairs vanished.
When I asked what just happened, she waved the blade and said,
“Lightning is one of nature’s manifestations of yang energy. Like fire, it burns away evil and has the power to purify.”
In other words, she could cut through this much yin energy no problem.
“I see.”
I had no idea what she meant, but one thing was clear—her lightning sword was ridiculous.
After listening to her dramatic explanation, we finally stepped onto the second floor.
“It’s smaller than the first floor.”
“Well, we’re right under the roof.”
Unlike the spacious first floor, the second floor was noticeably tighter.
Probably because it didn’t have a kitchen or living room.
There were two rooms on this floor. And it was obvious which one the snow woman was in.
The doorknob on the right-hand room was completely iced over.
Touching it bare-handed would definitely cause frostbite.
After exchanging glances with Fuma-senpai, I summoned the yang energy in my body and melted the ice on the handle.
Hssssss.
Steam hissed up, and at last, the door creaked open.
Clunk!
And that’s when it hit us.
A gust of wind, so cold it felt like walking into a blizzard, slammed straight into us.
“Ghh!”
I instinctively raised my arms to shield my face.
“Fuma-senpai! Hide behind me!”
“Got it!”
Even before I finished speaking, I began radiating yang energy from my entire body to counter the wind.
When the bone-chilling gust finally subsided, we could see into the room.
“……”
It was completely white.
The only furniture was a bed, a table, and a modest bookshelf.
And sitting on the bed… was the snow woman, crying softly to herself.
『Sniff… why won’t anyone come back? Mom… Dad… Ryu-chan…』
It wasn’t an actual voice. More like the words were echoing inside my head.
The unexpected sight left me frozen, uncertain.
“Senpai?”
When I turned to her with a bewildered look, Fuma-senpai gulped and said,
“Don’t be fooled by appearances. No matter how young she looks, you’d need to be a centuries-old yokai to emit this level of yin energy.”
“…Got it.”
I snapped back to attention.
Letting my guard down just because she looked fragile was dangerously naive.
I slowly approached the bed.
But the snow woman didn’t seem to notice us. She just kept crying.
『There’s nothing here… It’s cold…』
Like a lost child, her complaints sounded soft and pitiful.
And then—
The crying stopped.
She slowly turned her head toward us.
Pale white skin, hair like snow, and eyes as cold and blue as ice.
For a split second, her image overlapped with the girl in the photograph downstairs.
Then she spoke.
『Get out of this house!!』
Her words struck like a spell, slamming into my entire body.
It felt like everything around me was turning hostile.
And then it actually did.
Sharp icicles erupted from the walls and ceiling, all targeting me.
“Gh!”
I immediately tensed every muscle in my body.
This was the so-called Indestructibility technique.
By wrapping my body in massive yang energy, normal weapons couldn’t pierce my skin.
Crack!
The ice shards that struck me shattered instead.
And in that moment, Fuma-senpai charged forward with Raikirimaru in hand.
Her movement was as graceful as ever.
But just as her blade was about to reach the snow woman’s neck, she suddenly froze midair, like something had grabbed her.
Then—
Wham!
An ice hammer, rising from the floor, slammed her backward across the room.
“Gah!”
Fuma-senpai crashed into the far wall with a violent cough and slumped to the floor.
‘Some kind of psychic power?’
I instinctively shifted into full combat mode, but before I could make a move, the snow woman raised her hand again.
Shhkk!
Frost raced toward me along the floor.
Seeing that, I immediately launched into Jingak footwork.
The wooden plank beneath my foot cracked and popped upward.
When the frost hit it, it froze solid in an instant.
Yeah—this would have to be a close-range fight.
I had no means of attacking from a distance.
With my large frame, I lunged straight toward the snow woman on the bed.
But she muttered,
『Stop.』
“Ugh!”
And suddenly, my body stopped responding.
Same ability she used on Fuma-senpai earlier.
As I stood frozen in place, an icicle shot from the floor to impale me.
If I fell here, it’d go straight through my throat.
Just then, I regained control of my body.
And with no time to dodge, I chose to protect my neck—and thrust out my forehead instead.
It was a contest between a 50 cm-long icicle and my skull.
I clenched my teeth.
CRACK!!
Impact.
Two solid forces collided.
Luckily, it was my skull that survived.
‘…I thought I was dead for sure.’
Rubbing my now-bright-red forehead, I stared at the snow woman who hadn’t moved an inch from her spot on the bed.
How the hell was I supposed to deal with this?
