Chapter 125: Auction House (2)
He understood what the guard wanted to say.
The special invitation. The special guest. The special table. .
Adam moved forward. He walked past the tables of masked men. He walked to the lone table with the single chair. He sat down.
The guard gave a slight bow and then walked away. He disappeared back into the shadows from which he came.
A moment later a new person approached Adam's table. It was a lady. She was wearing very fancy clothes. She also had a mask on her face.
She came forward and placed some food on his table. She then set down a pair of glasses and a large menu-like card. The card was very big and was closed inside a thick file.
Adam's mask covered his eyes well. But his mouth was left open. He realized he could eat the food that was kept there.
The lady bent down a little. She spoke to Adam in a low voice. "Sir you should wear these glasses. Then you will be able to see even in this dark."
She said this and then pointed toward the file. "The details of whatever item you will find in the auction are already given inside."
Adam did not speak. He raised his hand toward the lady.
It was a simple gesture. A clear signal for her to go from there.
She understood immediately. She bowed and retreated into the dark.
Adam did not pick up the glasses.
He picked up the file instead. He opened it and saw what was inside. Adam did not need the glasses. He could see perfectly in the dark.
The file had many pages. Around ten of them.
The first item on the first page was a gun. It was listed as the most expensive gun. Adam looked at the picture and the price. He immediately turned the page. Adam had no interest in buying this gun.
He flipped through the rest of the pages. He saw all the things present in this file. As he looked at each item a new understanding formed in his mind.
This auction house was not selling something normal.
It was selling things that were a privilege. Things that could not be bought directly in this country.
He saw a listing for a unique diamond. He saw a picture of the head of an animal. It was a protected species. Hunting it was considered a crime in this country. The same thing was available here for the high price.
After reading the file Adam understood this completely.
Adam initially thought there would be some important thing for him in this auction house. He hoped to find something that would be beneficial for him. He wanted information. He wanted a clue about the forces moving against him.
But after seeing all those things Adam understood the truth. These were just the hobbies of rich people. This was a playground for the powerful. This was not a place for answers. It was a place for indulgence.
A feeling of disappointment settled in him. This was a waste of time.
He put the file back on the table with a soft thud.
He looked around at the other people present there. The masked figures sat at their tables. He could see their expensive suits their confident postures. He understood that all these people must be rich. They were for sure.
Then an idea came to Adam's mind.
A new possibility.
He wondered how many of these people belonged to those 80 families.
Adam could see many seats in this dark hall. He saw many tables where only one person was sitting. They sat alone just like him. . Important. He also saw some tables where only one man was sitting but beside him were women. They were companions not equals. Trophies.
Seeing all this Adam got an assumption. He felt a certainty grow inside him. Someone here belonged to the 80 families. This was exactly the kind of place they would be.
Seeing this a small smile formed on Adam's face.
He extended his hand towards the small bell kept on his table. He picked it up and rang it once. The sharp sound cut through the low
murmur of the hall.
After ringing it he put the bell back down.
A moment later the same lady who had come to serve him before appeared at his side. She came there and bent towards Adam.
"Sir do you need something?"
Adam turned and looked at the lady. He spoke to her in a calm voice.
"Do you know which family I belong to?"
Hearing this the lady got very surprised. She took a small step back. Her body tensed. Fear entered her eyes.
"Please forgive me, sir but how can I say this?" she said her voice a nervous whisper. "You must know."
Adam smiled.
"I belong to the Song family."
Hearing this the lady became very surprised. Her shock was genuine. The Song family. It was Philips's family. The Family name was very famous in the general world. It was even more famous in the underworld.
Adam turned his face from the lady. He looked out at all the people present there. He scanned the room without looking back at her.
"Tell all the people that a member of the Song family has come."
The lady came closer to Adam. There was a little fear in her voice.
"Sir this is against the rules."
Adam looked at the lady. He smiled at her again.
Then Adam suddenly stood up from his chair.
He spread both his hands wide. He took a deep breath.
He shouted. His voice was loud and clear. It filled the entire hall.
"You guys listen carefully. A member of the Song family has come here."
Every masked head in the room snapped toward him. The quiet conversations stopped.
"Bow in front of me and show me respect."
His voice was a command.
"Otherwise it will not be good for you."
They see adam with a fierce expression.
