I want to become a killer

Chapter 79: Part 78

The safe house was eerily quiet, the only sounds were the occasional creak of the building settling and the soft rustle of Mara moving around, trying to make me comfortable. Alan stood by the window, his eyes scanning the streets outside, his posture tense. We were safe for now, but I knew it wouldn't last long. Zenith didn't let failures slip away.

Mara had done her best to treat my wound, but the bleeding hadn't stopped entirely. I could feel the heat of blood soaking through the bandages, and the ache in my side was relentless. It wasn't the kind of pain you could ignore, but there was something about it that felt… familiar. Like it was a part of the process, a reminder that I had chosen this path.

"Drink this," Mara said, pressing a bottle of water into my hands. "You need to stay hydrated."

I didn't say anything, just took the bottle and drained it in one go. The water did little to wash away the gnawing hunger in my gut, but it was something. My mind wandered for a moment, back to the way things used to be—before all of this. But I quickly pushed the thought away. There was no going back now.

"I've got the data," Mara said, her voice quieter now, her hands shaking slightly as she pulled the laptop from her bag and set it on the table. The glow from the screen lit her face, making her look more fragile than she usually did. I wanted to tell her that everything would be okay, but I couldn't. None of us were okay.

Alan turned from the window and glanced at the screen. "What's in it?" he asked, his voice flat.

"It's everything we need to bring Zenith down," Mara replied, her eyes flicking to me for a second. "The list of all their operatives, locations, financial records... everything."

I leaned forward, ignoring the pain in my side, focusing on the laptop. The weight of what she had just said hit me like a wave. This wasn't just some petty revenge scheme. This was the key to dismantling one of the most powerful organizations in the world. Zenith's reach was vast, their influence far-reaching, and we had it all in our hands.

"We can't waste time," I said, my voice steady despite the pain. "We need to get this to the authorities, or whoever can use it to hit them where it hurts."

"We've been over this," Alan snapped, his frustration evident. "If we take it to the authorities, they'll just destroy the evidence. Zenith has everyone in their pockets."

I turned to him, my eyes narrowing. "Then what do you suggest we do? Sit on it and hope for the best?"

Alan paced around the room, his footsteps heavy. "We need a different approach," he said, his voice low. "We need to go public. Give the data to the right people—those who can take Zenith down from the inside."

Mara glanced up, a frown crossing her face. "Are you sure? Going public like that will put us all at risk. Zenith won't hesitate to eliminate us."

I didn't care. Risk was part of the game. It had always been part of it.

"Do we have a choice?" I asked, my voice cold. "Zenith isn't going to stop. We have to hit them where it hurts, before they come for us again."

There was a long silence as Alan considered my words. Finally, he nodded, though his expression remained grim. "Alright. We do it your way. But we need to move quickly."

Mara closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again, her resolve hardening. "I'll start working on a plan. But it'll take time."

"Time we don't have," Alan muttered, his eyes darting toward the door as if expecting someone to burst in at any moment.

I stood up slowly, wincing as the pain flared in my side. "We don't need time," I said. "We just need to be smart."

I walked over to the table, glancing at the laptop again. I was looking at the endgame, the way to bring down an empire. There was no turning back.

The plan was forming in my mind, a path forward that I didn't fully understand yet. But one thing was clear—we couldn't hide forever. We had to play Zenith's game, use their methods against them. It was the only way to survive.

"We'll need a team," I said, my mind already racing. "We'll need allies, people who are willing to fight."

Alan shook his head. "That's dangerous. You don't know who you can trust."

"I don't care," I replied, my tone final. "We can't do this alone."

Mara looked up at me, her face pale but determined. "I'll start reaching out to people who might be able to help. But we need to be careful. Zenith has eyes everywhere."

"We don't need to be careful," I said, my voice growing colder. "We need to be faster than they are."

The clock was ticking. I could feel it in my bones.

As I looked out the grimy window at the city lights flickering in the distance, I knew we were about to step into a much darker world than we had ever known. But that was the price of this war.

Zenith had made it personal. And now, it was time to make them pay.
