Chapter 445: 445 The Greatest Danger of All, Infinite Cruelty, The Return of the Lady in Black and Preparing for a New World.
Fury grabbed his head while sitting in his chair. The man who wouldn't blink even if the world were to enter World War III now had a look of agony on his face as he sweated.
"Why?!"
He quickly took some aspirin pills from the drawer and swallowed four of them. Fury was having a crisis at this moment, all because of the young man who had once come to him as a poor, simple orphan.
"That guy first steals one of my best agents, then makes me cover his secret identity by forging documents, charges me exorbitant amounts for jobs he could do with a snap, and forces me to constantly face a bunch of bitter old men who just want to solve everything with wars and nuclear attacks! and NOW!"
Fury wondered if this was karma. He wasn't the best person in the world, not to mention that as a Shield agent, he'd had to do many things he wasn't proud of. However, he'd stayed on the line between good and evil for a long time, and now it felt like his biggest responsibility had turned into being Allen's babysitter, hoping that one day he wouldn't destroy the world.
*Knock knock*
"Director Fury?"
"What is it, Agent Coulson?"
Phillip "Phil" Coulson entered with an ironic smile and a phone in his hand. He looked very uncomfortable at that moment.
"You know who it is, director..."
Fury swallowed, feeling his throat tighten. Right now, more than ever, he felt the urge to retire. Phil walked up to the desk and handed Fury the phone. He took a deep breath before answering.
"Yes..."
"..."
"Of course I understand, and we're working on it. Yes, I know this time it's too big to cover up..."
"..."
"I can't do it... I have a contract with him, if I reveal his secret identity, he'll know..."
"..."
"I'm sorry, I'll talk to him... and find a solution..."
Fury hung up, feeling tempted to throw his phone, but he held back. The reason was stronger.
The situation was simple: a seemingly quiet day for everyone except the world leaders who, regardless of whether they represented a small nation or a world power, were facing the same problem.
"Allen Walker"
...
People love heroes, and governments tolerate them because just as there are superheroes, there are supervillains. The problem is Allen. People knew how powerful he was, and at some point, they had no choice but to accept it. But it was fine, Allen saved the Earth from various problems, plus he never hid his actions, and both psychologists and politicians had analyzed his personality exhaustively.
Allen never considered himself a hero, or at least didn't want to be seen as one, so he charged money for "saving the world."
Governments were fine with that. A man who wanted money was easy to understand, and his actions were usually reasonable.
However, problems escalated when he stopped being someone simple... One day, Allen seemed to take the path of heroism.
This culminated in "The Boys" with his acceptance of his inherited power and his conversation with Superman. People became worried because pure heroism is dangerous for social stability. A superhero without limits could overthrow a government if it's for "justice." But in a turn of events, Allen didn't stay on that path for long.
Allen had a dark side, everyone does. That dark side also manifested in a dangerous entity that took the name of Void.
There was a fight, the most impressive, absurd, and dangerous fight Allen had ever had. In that fight, where he barely won, he had two options.
Allen could destroy his own darkness and become a human with an impeccable and pure heart, or he could accept that darkness with everything it entailed. We already know the answer to that question.
"I don't think a human should get rid of their flaws, or long for perfection. It's part of being human to make mistakes, and flaws are part of you. If you get rid of them, you'd be abandoning yourself." – Allen.
Allen accepted Void, and essentially, this brought a change in Allen's attitude, although at the time it was less noticeable. The most notable characteristic was his maturity in dealing with matters and the way he no longer blamed himself for killing others; sometimes it was the only way for an outsider like him. There were people in the chat who didn't like this; they saw Allen as some sort of angel, and seeing him be more selfish, arrogant at times, and unafraid to kill was very hard for them. But at the end of the day, it was a decision that only belonged to Allen, and he chose to live with his darkness.
At that point, governments looked at each other. It wasn't a secret that everyone was looking for a way to control this situation. Allen had uncontrollable power that could either destroy the world or protect it. Getting rid of Allen was out of the question, not only because it was virtually impossible but also because he was the protector of a world that seemed destined to be destroyed.
So, while many accepted Allen's existence as part of the world, some hid their insecurities behind a mask and simply pretended there wasn't a young man capable of ending the world walking the streets. However, it was a ticking time bomb, and now the situation had reached its worst conclusion...
One thing that was always a mystery to people was Allen's relationships in this world. Unlike DC, where it's known that Allen has relationships with several superhero women and some villains, in his own world, the identities of his girlfriends were limited to names in the chat:
MJ, Gwen, and Felicia top the list; Natasha and Maria, who pretended to have an ambiguous family relationship with Allen, Rogue, and Ruby, which turned into a student-teacher relationship; Nikky, who was once a minor antagonist; and Carol, who once flirted with him. However, at this moment, the identities of Gwen and MJ were revealed, and it turned out they were Spider Gwen and Spinneret, two superheroes from New York.
Everything was fine until one of them got injured... and then came what everyone had feared.
Allen became furious...
He had never been so angry, and he had never been so ruthless. With no restrictions, he tortured the culprit in front of everyone. It was a one-sided massacre where Morlun was nothing more than brutally torn apart, he received brutal, merciless revenge. His screams resonated in people's minds all over the world, who seemed to be in a trance, witnessing and carving into their souls the fear of seeing Allen lose all trace of mercy for the first time.
After Allen began melting Morlun, the transmission was cut off by the system, and the people of the world could breathe again, but not before becoming aware of two things: what he was capable of and what would happen if he ever turned against the world.
Of course, some saw beyond. Morlun was a monster, maybe not as strong as Allen, but even more cruel. He roamed the world killing and devouring others; he was a bastard who ate others to increase his power. If Allen weren't there, who would stop people like him?
No one could find an answer to their doubts...
...
Morlun's torture continued off-camera. Allen challenged himself to make the Heir suffer. Allen acquired a skill in the "Herogasm" of "The Boys" that allowed him to increase a person's pleasure.
The skill that the system convinced him not to destroy could be used in another way; pleasure and pain share similarities, so with some modifications, Allen was able to turn this skill into a pain amplifier.
"WHAT?!"
Morlun, struggling to maintain his form and not be melted by Allen's temperature manipulation, felt the pain in his body intensify. Twice, three times... a hundred times more... and then a thousand times more!!
"AAAAHHHHHHHHHGGGGGG!!!"
He couldn't think, couldn't speak, couldn't do anything but suffer... it was pain; his very existence caused him pain.
Morlun, instinctively or to protect himself, chose not to maintain a physical form, allowing Allen to disintegrate him.
'This is fine... no more pain...'
"You won't escape..."
The cold voice of the monster beside him sent a chill down his soul. Out of nowhere, his body began regenerating against his will. He hadn't planned on letting Morlun escape. It was just a dream to think he could end this so easily.
"NOOOO!"
When half of his face was reconstructed, Morlun looked on in horror, realizing he couldn't even choose to die.
"You won't have that luxury..."
Allen, in the form of his nightmare, went further and gave Morlun a spiritual body like a shinigami's so that he could use spiritual energy to apply the newly acquired pain amplification skill directly to his soul.
Morlun stared in disbelief as his executioner healed him just to cause him more suffering.
"NO, WAIT! IT WASN'T PERSONAL! I DIDN'T WANT TO KILL THEM... I WAS JUST HUNGRY..."
He was just hungry...
With just that sentence, he wanted to justify the death of a thousand Spider-Mans, leaving their loved ones suffering in their worlds. With that single phrase, he wanted to make it seem like his actions were inevitable.
Allen wanted to hurt Morlun, to do a countless number of things so horrible that even the cruelest assassins would vomit. His eyes were growing darker and darker as Allen arrived at a very dark place.
"What are you doing... this isn't like you, Allen?"
"...!" Allen's mouth opened slightly, as did his eyes, which misted over.
A voice entered his head; it was the voice of a girl he knew very well; it brought back a great number of memories.
"Where are you going without me, Allen?"
The voice seemed to wrap around his neck from behind with two light, pale arms that were unexpectedly warm. The nostalgic voice that pulled him out of that abyss, almost as if by magic. Allen barely pressed his lips together and then smiled.
"Welcome back..."
...
Morlun, who was terrified, didn't realize how close he had been to the worst possible ending.
"AHHHHH!"
Allen grabbed him by the neck and made him look at his face. "Tell me, bastard, how did you get to my world?! I don't care who you are, but it's unnatural to travel from world to world, I know it! I know it better than anyone!"
Allen was a traveler, but at first, he needed the system to do so. This Morlun justified himself by saying that Spider-Men were his prey to be hunted, but to do so, they would need the power to travel through the multiverse from birth, and that's not the case; they stole that power.
"I WILL! I'LL TELL YOU EVERYTHING!"
Allen listened attentively to Morlun's story. The Inheritors attacked the Weaver Master and, after many losses, managed to subdue them and gain access to the Loom of Life and Fate. With those two pieces, they could open a portal to each universe. But they only hunt the spider totems and then leave the world.
Most of the time, that Spider-Man is Peter Parker, but there have been all types of Spider-Men, from men, women, cats, and pigs, from all over the world. Of course, Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson have also worn the mask. They are all totems chosen to be Spider-Man.
"I see... hakai."
"Wait—"
Allen didn't let Morlun speak any further. He immediately destroyed him, body and soul. No more Inheritor... that won't bring back any Spider-Man he's consumed, but it will give peace knowing that no one else will be eaten by Morlun.
Allen stared at the completely dark sky. He hadn't thought until now but he had transmitted through his live-stream what he did. His mind gave him nothing to do but think about protecting Gwen and killing Morlun.
The world now knew what he was capable of...
[ Allen, what are you thinking of doing?]
"I don't know, for now, I just want to know if Gwen is okay..."
...
Allen returned to New York and looked for MJ and Gwen, who were with Natasha at the location where he had left the limousine with Felicia.
It was nighttime on a quiet street, giving them some privacy. Natasha and Felicia were outside the limousine, talking.
Allen appeared not far away, and both women sighed with relief seeing him back. He also seemed to have controlled his emotions.
"Allen, thank God you're back!"
Natasha approached him, took off her helmet, revealing her red hair, and hugged him. She was more worried about Allen's mental state at that moment than she was about Morlun, who had been practically dead since he arrived in this world.
"I'm fine..."
Natasha held Allen's cheeks and looked into his eyes. Despite still being the wine-colored eyes she was used to, they had the clarity she recognized. Natasha kissed Allen's cheek with a deep sigh of relief.
Allen kissed Natasha's nose with a half-smile. "Don't underestimate me. I've been through a lot; I won't become an evil entity just because I'm angry."
"I told you~"
Felicia crossed her arms confidently as if she always knew Allen would be fine. However, Allen noticed the heavy breathing and the slight trembling of her hands, showing that she was just as worried as Natasha.
Allen smiled, let go of Natasha, and walked toward Felicia to hug her. She tried to resist but soon relaxed.
"Don't tell anyone..."
"You don't have to be strong all the time... not with me, not with them, we are practically family..."
Felicia bit her lip but then returned Allen's hug tightly. "Why didn't you get here faster?"
Felicia complained, but she wasn't angry; it seemed more like a pout.
"I know, I'm sorry, it won't happen again..."
Upon receiving the answer she wanted, Felicia seemed to completely recover, and though she wanted to stay in the hug longer, she didn't force it, as she knew Allen was worried about MJ and Gwen, who were inside the limousine.
Allen saw MJ inside with a saddened expression. He approached, and she got out of the car, jumped into his arms, and started to cry.
"I... couldn't prevent it."
MJ's sadness was mainly out of frustration for not being able to do something at the right moment. Her fear, which manifested when they fought the Green Goblin, became a reality with Morlun.
"It's not your fault," Allen grabbed MJ's cheeks and wiped her tears. "That fake vampire was at the level of needing all the Avengers, and even then, it wasn't certain they would win."
"Still, I should be able to protect Gwen until you come."
Allen smiled kindly. "If it were the other way around, and you were hurt, I'm sure Gwen would blame herself. No one can know what would have happened if. We can only learn from our mistakes and improve. Even then, it's likely we'll make mistakes again, but that's part of being human."
MJ nodded weakly. She was still sad but in a better state than before.
Allen entered the limousine and saw Gwen resting in a seat with 2B taking care of her.
"Thanks, 2B. Is Gwen okay?"
"It's nothing, Master." 2B showed Allen a screen with Gwen's vital signs. Everything seemed fine after using a Phoenix Tear that Allen had received as a gift from Rias. Since it wasn't very useful to him, he gave it to MJ, who was more likely to end up injured on a mission.
"That Phoenix Tear turned out to be very useful, Master."
"I'll make sure to thank Rias when I visit her world..."
2B squinted upon hearing her master's words. If it were a man, there would be no suspicion about what "Thank you" could mean, but being a woman, and knowing her master's nature, it could end up being something very... different.
Unfortunately, Allen didn't hear his Automaton Maid's thoughts, as he focused all his attention on Gwen.
Allen returned to his apartment and called Helen to let her know that Gwen would be staying at his place. Luckily, the woman was understanding, and Allen didn't have to give any further explanation.
"I'd like my first grandchild to be named after my mother if it's a girl~"
With those words, the woman hung up, leaving Allen with an incredulous expression. What kind of mother is she? Shouldn't she be against this?
...
The next day, there was a somber atmosphere around the world. The events that had transpired left a mark on everyone's heart, especially knowing that Morlun was just one of those Heirs and that there was a vast multiverse with beings capable of crossing between all worlds, and it wasn't something unique to Allen.
How was all this known?
Because someone anonymous had spread a series of recordings of conversations with Morlun, obviously it was Dex, but no one knew that.
...
Allen knew that the heavy atmosphere wasn't just because of the Inheritors but because of himself. He had shown a level of cruelty that he hadn't exhibited until now.
[Allen, maybe you should consider going to another world prematurely. The current atmosphere is very heavy; maybe you can improve your image in another world, you know, just so people don't think you'll destroy the world if you ever wake up on the wrong side of the bed.]
"Maybe you're right... I should prepare for another trip..."
