Chapter 16: I reincarnated as one of the Three Stooges in a fantasy world
Chapter 16
Evolved Zombies – Part 2
Tolen walked with the six students right behind him.
"It's still not working, Mr. Tolen," said Liam, rank 113.
"Damn it, let's go farther."
As they walked, they saw Enrico with his watch, trying to call the professor.
"Enrico!"
He looked at them, surprised.
"Finally, I found someone. Are your watches working?"
Tolen shook his head. "No, this zone seems to make them stop working."
Noticing the other students behind him, Enrico said, "It's good that you've joined up. We have to find the others. I noticed signs of a battle and I'm going to follow them—it might be other students."
Tolen thought for a moment. This is good—the more of us, the better.
"Then it would be better if we went together."
Enrico turned but noticed they seemed a bit tired.
"Alright, I'll go ahead. You all look tired. I'll leave marks so we don't get separated."
He ran ahead, following the signs of battle, while the students watched him.
"He's changed a lot. He wouldn't be, would he?"
"What, a demon in disguise? I don't think so. He still keeps parts of his old personality."
While the students talked, Tolen looked at the battle signs. Looks like it was more than two students. They lost a lot of blood and decided to run from whatever was chasing them.
Tolen stood up. Enrico, be careful.
"Let's rest a bit longer, then walk fast."
"Right."
---
Serenya and Valença walked side by side in silence. As they turned the corner, they saw a student's body on the ground and ran toward it.
Valença knelt beside the body and tried to hear the heartbeat. "What happened? The heart's not beating."
Serenya looked at the blood spread on the ground and then at the trail of blood coming from the left.
"He's already dead."
Valença tried to save him, to stop the bleeding, but she couldn't.
"What is happening?"
Serenya grabbed the watch and turned it on. The watch started beeping and then a message appeared saying there was a problem with the portal and it would take three hours for anyone to enter.
"I sent a warning, but it'll take three hours."
Trembling, Valença placed the body against the wall.
"What if the other students are in danger too?"
"If you want to save them, go ahead. But I'll look for my subordinates first."
Valença looked at her. "You only care about them?"
"What a stupid question—of course I do. If I find someone else in need along the way, I'll help. But I'll mainly look for my own."
Serenya began walking away from the direction the blood came from. It's better not to go that way. I hope this blood isn't from one of them. She stopped. What if it is?
Serenya turned and followed the blood trail, while Valença stood up.
"I'll go with you and help the students."
She followed Serenya, who wore a worried expression.
---
A strike passed close to Kai's head. He rolled to the side and blocked a kick.
So heavy…
He hit the ceiling and spun in the air into position. First Lunar Technique: Crescent Slash. A slash flew toward that strange zombie.
The zombie's head turned, and the attack hit the ground as if something pressed it down, carving a deep cut. Not only that—Kai's body felt heavier.
Damn, what is this? A blow hit Kai, throwing him against the wall, followed by another.
Second Lunar Technique: First Quarter. As if his arm moved on its own, his sword deflected the attack.
It was a technique that redirected attacks with a wrist spin, using the opponent's force for counterattacks.
An opening—Crescent Slas—
Just as he was about to strike, the head spun again and Kai was thrown upward, his body suddenly feeling light.
What's happening?
A kick sent him crashing into the wall. Kai got up again, frustrated, and used the lightness of his body to increase his speed, appearing beneath the enemy.
The head spun again, and his body grew heavier than before, cracking the ground beneath him.
Another zombie attack came, but a fireball suddenly appeared in front of the creature, making it dodge.
"Huff... you're having a lot of trouble, huh?"
Enrico appeared, sweating a bit as he approached. He had passed by the bodies of some students.
"Can you stand?"
Kai's eyes gleamed as he used his sword to support himself.
"Yes. I'll defeat it no matter what."
Enrico smiled slightly. Yes, that's the protagonist I followed for more than five hundred chapters.
He immediately summoned two fireballs that merged into one and launched the attack—but with another spin, the attack went upward.
"What is that?"
"I don't know. Suddenly, my body and attacks get either heavy or light."
"Gravity magic?"
"I think so too."
They prepared to attack together when another zombie appeared behind them. They barely dodged.
"You—"
It was the same blue-blooded zombie Enrico had fought before. They were surrounded, and over a hundred more zombies started appearing.
"These bleed black, unlike those."
So this was the system's increased difficulty.
"Kai, aim for the ground."
Kai immediately attacked the floor, and Enrico followed. A hole opened and they both fell to the lower level.
"Just as I thought—this place has floors."
"Well done, Enrico. But now what?"
"Want to face them head-on? Or run?"
"In my state, run."
They ran as zombies began descending through the hole.
"Let's turn right, and Kai—if you hear footsteps above us, let me know."
"Got it."
His hearing is better than mine—he'll be useful.
They turned—and the blue-blooded zombie was already behind them.
"Kai!"
They launched a joint attack.
"Crescent Slash!"
"Fireball!"
The fireball merged with the slash, hitting and pushing the zombie back.
"Enrico, I can hear a lot of footsteps above."
"Alright, attack before they pass over."
When Kai heard them moving, he stepped back a bit and shouted:
"NOW!"
They repeated the same attack on the ceiling, creating a hole and leapt upward.
The people walking looked back—it was Tolen and the students following Enrico's trail on the left.
"What?"
"Run—to the right, not the left!"
Without thinking twice, seeing Kai running after Enrico, they fled.
---
Serenya and Valença were walking through the corridors when the trail of blood disappeared, and an unrecognizable body lay on the ground. Valença felt like vomiting.
"It ends here," Serenya said, glancing around the corners, trying to find them.
"How can you stand it?"
Serenya looked at the body.
"Not feel anything when seeing a corpse? Please, we'll see many more in the future. And also—"
She looked down for a second. "I've seen worse."
Valença gripped her staff tightly, and they heard the sound of crying and ran toward it.
A black-haired girl was trying to stop the bleeding from another girl's stomach.
Valença immediately went to help.
"What happened?"
"I don't know. A zombie suddenly appeared and killed many of ours, and then my friend stayed behind so we could escape, but she was badly wounded."
Serenya raised her hand and used control magic to stop the bleeding. "You're rank 97, and she's 94, right?"
"Yes."
"Valença, cauterize her wound. And you—put a cloth in her mouth."
They did so as quickly as possible. The girl bit down hard on the cloth from the pain, and when they finished, both of them sighed in relief.
"What's your name?"
"Sílvia. And my friend is Vanessa."
Serenya decided to stand guard for a while, watching the surroundings.
After half an hour, they left, with Vanessa leaning on Sílvia's shoulder. As they walked a bit farther, a noise came from the right, and the ground in the distance burst open.
It was Enrico, Tolen, Kai, and six other students running—followed by dozens of zombies. The girls were surprised, as the group was running right toward them.
Enrico noticed them. "Sorry, I probably should've gone the other way."
