Chapter 839: New Update
Erend, still seated in the military headquarters after the recent mission to capture foreign spies, let out a long sigh.
It seemed like he could never catch a break. Even after delegating the Main Quest to Eccar in the other world, he couldn't shake the lingering sense of worry. Because he was the one who wielded the System, only he could receive the updates and instructions regarding the Quest's progression. Eccar could only wait.
And now, things had just gotten a bit more complicated—not necessarily harder, but certainly more troublesome for him.
There was no real danger for Erend in this mission of catching spies. No amount of explosives or gunfire could harm him anymore. He had already faced things far worse than bullets.
What made this task frustrating was its nature, the network of spies they were after remained elusive. Locations were unclear, identities hidden. Which meant investigation. Time-consuming, tedious investigation.
Worse still, Erend couldn't use the System's powers to make this easier. The mission didn't qualify as a world-threatening crisis, only a national vulnerability. That meant no shortcuts, no Magical detection, no supernatural intervention.
But still, it had to be done. His job here was to protect this country, while Eccar handled the other.
He just hoped that when the real trouble in that other world finally began, it wouldn't happen while he was waist-deep in problems here.
"Damnit. Don't jinx it," he muttered to himself, shaking his head as if trying to toss the thought away.
He opened his System window with a blink of mental focus.
[ Main Quest: The Forest Awakens! ]
[ Description: A mysterious force has stirred deep within the ancient forest bordering the northern edge of the Qomore Kingdom. Creatures long dormant now cry out under the shift, and the veil between nature and something older begins to thin. Investigate the source of this disturbance before it spreads. ]
Erend stared at it in silence, waiting for something to change. He was sure the new information from Eccar would trigger an update.
Normally, he never waited like this. The Quest would appear by itself during moments of direct involvement. But now, not being on the battlefield himself, he couldn't help but feel anxious.
Fortunately, he wasn't in a meeting. He was just sitting in the smoking area, a few meters from the rest of the task force. They noticed his serious expression and gave him space, sensing he was in no mood to be disturbed.
Five minutes passed.
Then, finally, the window flickered.
[ Main Quest Updated! ]
[ Destroy the Rifts. ]
[ Description: The force of the Forest God is beginning to influence all forest dwellers. Plants, tribes, and animals are changing. Rifts from the other world have begun to open, and creatures are stepping into this one. Destroy the rifts, or the forests will fall under their sway. ]
Erend's expression turned grim.
He exhaled deeply. So the situation had escalated—perhaps more than Eccar and the adventurers could handle alone.
"Do I need to go there myself?" he thought, brows furrowed. "No. I think Eccar can still handle it."
But the doubt lingered.
He wouldn't act just yet. Not unless Eccar said outright that things had spiraled beyond control.
Without wasting another second, Erend reached out telepathically again. This time, Eccar answered almost immediately.
---
Eccar immediately straightened up when he felt the familiar tug of Erend's telepathy reaching out to him. Without delay, he accepted the connection.
"The new instruction arrived?" he asked.
"Yes," Erend replied. "But it's bad news. Get ready."
Eccar let out a dry, self-deprecating laugh. Somehow, he had expected that. Even if it turned out to be terrible, there was no avoiding it. Might as well laugh and get on with it.
The adventurers nearby, seeing him chuckle to himself, exchanged puzzled looks. But none of them thought it was strange. After everything they had seen from Eccar, they knew this meant something important had come through. Something tied directly to their quest. Their expressions turned grim in silent anticipation.
Through the link, Erend began to explain the updated Quest.
A rift had opened, no, rifts. Portals from another world, allowing strange, unknown creatures to cross into the forests of this one.
The awakened god's power was spreading, influencing the very essence of the woods like its beasts, its tribes, even the plants. The forest wasn't just alive anymore, it was being transformed.
Eccar's amused expression faded, replaced by thoughtful contemplation.
"This really is bad news," he answered through the link. "We've already encountered a few of these creatures. Things that clearly didn't belong in this world—strange bodies and powers. The adventurers with me are strong, but I'm not sure they're strong enough. We both know what kind of threats can come through something called a 'rift from another world.'"
He could feel Erend sighing heavily from the other side, the tension pressing through the link.
"You're right," Erend said. "If the situation really worsens, I'll go there myself."
"Alright. For now, I'll try to manage things on my end. Maybe we'll get lucky, and nothing too serious comes through," Eccar replied.
With that, the telepathic connection faded.
Eccar turned and began walking toward the adventurers gathered nearby, their eyes already fixed on him. They could sense it, something had changed.
Eccar sat down beside the gathered adventurers, his expression calm, though the weight in his eyes showing the wight the news he carried.
He offered a small smile, attempting to ease the tension a little.
"I just received a new divination from my very trusted friend," he said lightly.
The adventurers leaned in, sensing the shift in the air. There was a quiet seriousness in his voice now that made their stomachs tighten.
Then, he explained everything he had just heard from Erend. The new developments. The rifts. The arrival of foreign, unknown creatures. The forest's transformation under the influence of the awakened god's power.
As he spoke, the adventurers exchanged uneasy glances. Faces that moments ago had been worn by the dirt and exhaustion of travel now turned pale with growing dread. Worry crept in like a silent fog, dulling the flicker of confidence in their eyes.
They understood the implications. They had faced monsters before—but they don't know aboutt things from another world.
Silence fell as Eccar finished speaking. None of them questioned his words.
