Chapter 58: The Difficulty of Being a Boyfriend
Spinning was relatively easy—after all, thanks to Haruno's "enthusiastic sponsorship," Yuu's physical abilities had improved somewhat.
After setting down a slightly dizzy Haruno post-spin, Yuu, without catching his breath, immediately grabbed the blindfold.
Before putting it on, he surveyed the surroundings—the distance to the watermelon, roughly how many steps to reach the optimal position, and the length of the wooden stick provided by the staff.
His sharp eyes took it all in before he slowly closed them and put on the blindfold.
Holding the stick with both hands, Yuu steadied his steps, adopting a chudan stance from kendo. An electric current seemed to surge through his body from his hands, illuminating the dark world, heightening his sensitivity to the airflow, sounds, and spatial sense around him.
Expert-level swordsmanship.
"Yuu-chan, ready? If you're ready, move forward~"
Yuu nodded, following her instructions, stepping cautiously as if navigating a dark cave with a python ready to strike.
Many eyes in the audience were unconsciously drawn to him, observing his calm and steady gait, the unwavering tip of the stick, and the cold, focused aura that didn't radiate outward. Whispers began to spread.
The host's eyes gleamed, setting down the microphone: "This guy's no ordinary person."
A staff member overheard the murmur, couldn't resist approaching, and asked: "Senior, can you tell? Could you also…"
The host sighed, looking at the stage with a weary gaze, then patted the young man's shoulder beside her.
"He can walk this straight blindfolded, looking ready to swing the stick anytime. Anyone with eyes can see he's not ordinary."
"…"
On stage, Yuu estimated the distance based on his earlier observation—he was just five meters from the watermelon.
At that moment, Haruno's instructions came again: "Yuu-chan, you're veering! Veering left! To the right!"
"…"
With his swordsmanship skill combined with muscle control, Yuu didn't lose his direction despite being blindfolded. On the contrary, his sharpened senses confirmed he was walking straight, not deviating a single centimeter.
But Haruno said he was veering? Was it her mistake or his?
After a moment's thought, Yuu gave a faint smile, following her words and slightly turning right.
"Right, a bit to the right… Too far right, quick, back… Left, more left, yes, there!"
Like a little girl fully immersed in a game, she shouted cheerfully at him:
"Right in front of you, the watermelon's there—swing hard!"
Blindfolded, Yuu raised the wooden stick high.
The next second, he spun around and swung the stick with one hand backward, the shadow of the stick falling like a sword.
*CRACK!*
It hit the watermelon behind him perfectly, the sound crisp and loud, the stick's tip stopping firmly in the watermelon's dented center.
Then, with that point as the core, the watermelon slowly split into two neat halves.
"OHHHHHHHHHH—"
Thunderous applause erupted from below. Yuu, holding the stick in one hand, removed the blindfold. Without looking at the watermelon or the audience, he turned to Haruno at the starting line, raised an eyebrow, and chuckled.
His gaze signaled—"That's it? You thought you could trick me?"
Haruno's cheeks twitched twice, her face breaking into a wide grin—
"Then hold on till the end and show me."
Though this was a ten-group game, in their eyes, there was only the opponent, electric sparks crackling in the air, neither willing to yield.
Yuu returned the equipment to the staff, who helped scoop out the watermelon flesh and place it on plates, equipped with forks and other utensils nearby.
Other groups either missed the watermelon or were still running around, unable to find their direction. Now, only they had entered the final second round.
If nothing went wrong, the victory might be theirs—but the competition itself didn't matter. For them, the "lover" before their eyes was the only enemy.
Perhaps considering the difference between men and women, the watermelon portions on the two plates were noticeably different.
Yuu looked at Haruno, smiling: "You didn't eat much at lunch, did you?"
As he spoke, he placed the smaller portion in front of her.
"Go ahead, don't hold back."
"Hm~" Haruno eyed him up and down, smiling meaningfully. Without saying much, she casually and cheerfully took the larger portion.
"Then let's split it like this—start eating~"
A strange feeling stirred in his heart, but Yuu set it aside, grabbed a fork, and began eating quickly, bite after bite.
In his prediction, Haruno would surely chew slowly to hold him back, so he had to outpace her, finish his portion first, then take hers to eat.
From the start, Yuu planned to finish the entire watermelon alone.
Unfortunately, the wretched system didn't give him a fast-digestion skill, so he could only rely on himself—his stomach might ache later.
But—no problem!
If he could make this uncontrollable college girl feel a bit guilty, a bit restrained, at the cost of a stomachache, it was worth it!
Yuu was ready, lowering his head and rapidly devouring the sweet fruit before him.
Other groups had finally cracked their watermelons and were now greedily eating the flesh, like monkeys starved for days.
Yuu ate until a third remained, then glanced at Haruno's progress, only to pause, his eyes widening slightly.
Her larger portion was already half gone. In terms of efficiency, she was almost on par with him.
Haruno kept eating with small bites, her manner refined and unhurried, yet she never stopped.
(…Something's off. Why's she so persistent?)
Sensing his gaze, Haruno turned, narrowed her eyes with a smile, and swallowed the watermelon in her mouth.
Then she scooped another bite, put it in her mouth, covered it, and chewed with effort.
(Is she acting?)
Yuu couldn't tell if her strained expression was real or fake.
While not looking, he finished his portion, slightly panting and suppressing nausea from being full, before glancing back.
His brows furrowed tightly. The usual cheerful smile was gone. Like a machine, Haruno expressionlessly put watermelon in her mouth, chewing slowly before swallowing with difficulty.
Less than a third remained.
"Let me handle the rest."
Covering her mouth, Haruno glanced at him, the corners of her eyes curving slightly as if smiling, but a fleeting look of discomfort crossed her face.
Yuu didn't respond. The next second, he resumed his action, rejecting her offer.
(…I really don't understand what she's thinking.)
(Being a boyfriend is so hard.)
Being Haruno's boyfriend was even harder.
"Don't move, I'll do it."
Yuu took a deep breath, grabbed his fork again, ignored his groaning stomach, and devoured the watermelon faster than Haruno, swallowing it down.
After repeating this a few times, Yuu, looking unwell and clutching his mouth as if he might vomit any second, set the plate on the table and raised his hand to signal the host.
