Chapter 73: The Uninvited Guest!
[A-rank Technique: Bringer-of-Darkness Technique]
[Technique Description: Plunge everything into a dark abyss!]
[Technique Effect: Creates an absolutely dark physical environment, completely sealing the opponent's vision. Only the user can see clearly within the dark environment.]
[Technique Evaluation: The sky is dark.]
Although he had successfully "one-click learned" this A-rank genjutsu through the panel, Nara Keisuke still conscientiously opened the ninjutsu scroll in his hand.
"An A-rank, area-of-effect genjutsu. Is there something not quite right about it?"
"Hm? Have you not realized—ugh, I almost forgot you have a Chakra Crystal!" Nara Shikano slapped his forehead and reminded him, "Keisuke, the effect of the Bringer-of-Darkness Technique is to create an absolutely dark environment. Surely you can't see how 'great' this genjutsu's effect is for our Nara clan?"
In an absolutely dark environment, a Nara clan ninja would have no way to use their [Shadow Secret Techniques]! As a Nara ninja who transcended tradition, Keisuke finally understood what the clan head meant. "Doesn't the Third Hokage know about our family's ninjutsu characteristics?"
"How could he not!" Nara Shikano shook his head, revealing the truth of the matter. "What I mean is, this Bringer-of-Darkness Technique is not the Third Hokage's explanation, but the explanation of another person."
A flash of inspiration went through Keisuke's mind, and he directly locked onto the target. "Shimura Danzō?"
"Yes, Shimura Danzō!" The old clan head extended a finger and tapped the ninjutsu scroll in Keisuke's hand. "After this incident, our three Ino-Shika-Chō clans are now completely on bad terms with Danzō—oh, right, I forgot to tell you one thing. After that incident, besides Yakushi Nono'o leaving Root, Yamanaka Rin has also been brought back to the Yamanaka clan by Inojin."
Nara Shikano stroked his beard, a cold light flashing in his eyes. "Losing three Jonin subordinates one after another, a loss of this degree can be considered quite huge even for Danzō. He must have intentionally done this to disgust us on such a small matter, sending someone to secretly swap out the Third Hokage's placating reward."
"Clan Head, although I really dislike Shimura Danzō, this statement of yours..." Keisuke slowly organized his words. "Are you saying that Danzō's Root can now freely interfere with the Anbu, which is under the direct jurisdiction and management of the Hokage?"
"This is also the part that I can't figure out." Nara Shikano's cold expression faded, replaced by a strange look. "Logically speaking, the Third Hokage has governed Konoha for decades. The Anbu shouldn't be a place others can interfere with. But Danzō..."
After thinking for a moment, Shikano shook his head, casting the troublesome problem from his mind. "In any case, Keisuke, the feud between us and Danzō will not end so easily." He earnestly advised, "You must be careful."
"Don't worry, Clan Head." Keisuke nodded, a sharp glint flashing in the depths of his eyes. "I also don't believe that the incident from before is completely over!"
Not making enemies that keep me up at night. This had always been Keisuke's principle of conduct. But if he really did provoke such an enemy... for his own peace and happiness, he would be sure to cut out the root of the trouble as soon as possible!
'Just as I expected... this child Keisuke is diligent and motivated, and at the same time, he does not lack a decisive heart!' The old clan head glanced at Keisuke and nodded to himself. "Regarding the sealing jutsu and the Water Release ninjutsu, I will handle them as soon as possible. If you have problems in other areas, you can also come to me at any time. As for the Chakra Crystal... I can only say I'll do my best."
"Thank you, Clan Head," Keisuke expressed his gratitude.
"I should be the one thanking you." Nara Shikano tightened his grip on the [Shadow Beast Scroll] in his hands. This was another technique scroll with a comprehensive value no less than that of the [Lacquer Eye]! If the abilities of the [Lacquer Eye] and the [Shadow Beast Scroll] were popularized within the clan... perhaps the Nara clan could really compete for the position of Fourth—no, Fifth Hokage!
Leaving the clan grounds, Nara Keisuke moved in the direction of the Kikyo Orphanage.
'A Chakra Crystal, a sealing jutsu, a high-level Water Release ninjutsu. The Clan Head is as generous as ever.'
'And there was an unexpected gain!'
'Although the Clan Head doesn't think much of the [Bringer-of-Darkness Technique], I feel this area-of-effect genjutsu has quite a bit of potential to be explored...'
'Of course, the most important thing is still the [Shadow Transformation Technique]!'
In a cheerful mood, Nara Keisuke quickly returned to the Kikyo Orphanage.
With Sunagakure having dispatched its troops, the orphanage, which had been crowded with Akimichi clan ninja a few days ago, had become much "quieter." However, there were still many people from within Kikyo Castle, and even Konoha Village, who would make a special trip to the orphanage to taste the special new dish here, "fried chicken." It was just that compared to before, the flow of customers had now returned to a normal range. And as the number of customers increased, the chances of the children in the orphanage being adopted also increased. In the past few days, two children had already been adopted by kind-hearted commoner families.
When Keisuke returned, there was another guest visiting the orphanage. But this guest's identity was somewhat unexpected!
"Oyakata En!"
After getting a clear look at the other's facial features, Keisuke directly used the [Body Flicker Technique], flashing to Yakushi Nono'o's side and blocking her path.
Looking at this "rogue ninja from the Land of Hot Water," who had almost faded from his memory, Keisuke narrowed his eyes. "What are you doing here?"
"The genius little brother from the Nara clan. It's been a while, you've grown quite a bit taller," Oyakata En said with a smile, looking Keisuke up and down as if appraising him. "You look more like an adult ninja than before."
"Keisuke..." Nono'o gently patted his shoulder and said softly, "Mr. Oyakata is here to visit the orphanage. Also, according to the fat nun, Mr. Oyakata also wants to invest in our fried chicken business."
"This person..." Keisuke's brow furrowed slightly, but considering the other's difficult circumstances, he did not expose his identity in public.
"Matron Yakushi is correct," Oyakata En nodded generously. "I returned with that Konoha ninja squad, hmm, the one with the passionate young man who always likes to wear a green jumpsuit. I really am here to do business this time! My original plan was to get into Konoha's real estate market, but I happened to discover this novel food called 'fried chicken' being sold at the gate of this orphanage... A merchant's sense of smell tells me that this food has enormous potential commercial value."
Keisuke paid no attention to what he was saying. But Nono'o, who had faintly sensed the situation, very calmly invited him into the orphanage's reception room.
Inside the simple, plain reception room, Keisuke and Nono'o sat on one side, with Oyakata En on the other. Between them was only a tea table and three cups of coarse tea.
In this environment, Keisuke no longer needed to hold back. "I'll be direct, Oyakata En. Your identity is too sensitive. The Kikyo Orphanage does not welcome you."
"Little Brother Nara, are you perhaps the man of the house at this orphanage?" Oyakata En still had that smiling expression, not showing any anger at all. "Matron Yakushi hasn't spoken yet."
"I'm very sorry, Mr. Oyakata." Nono'o's eyebrows curved, and she said generously, "Keisuke's attitude is my attitude."
"Oh? It seems I have misjudged the relationship between you two." Oyakata En adjusted the flashy sunglasses on his nose. "Then let's put aside the matter of cooperation for now. Matron Yakushi, I would like to ask, does your orphanage accept homeless infants?"
Homeless infants? Keisuke's brow furrowed slightly, a few scattered thoughts flashing through his mind. But he didn't say much on this matter. He could refuse Oyakata En's business cooperation, but he also knew that "children" were Nono'o's fatal weakness!
However, just as Keisuke knew Nono'o's depths, Nono'o also knew Keisuke's lengths. Since Keisuke held such great vigilance and repulsion towards this Mr. Oyakata, Nono'o naturally would not rashly agree to his topic. "For a Mr. Oyakata who plans to get involved in the real estate industry to be talking about 'homeless infants' doesn't sound very convincing."
"In fact, I was originally planning to open an institution dedicated to taking in orphans." Oyakata En shrugged and drank the tea in front of him in one gulp. "Eek! The taste of this tea is really—In any case, it seems the talks have completely broken down, so I must take my leave."
Oyakata En put down the teacup with a bitter face, nodded to the other two, and then left the reception room in a decisive manner.
"What on earth did that guy come here for?" Keisuke frowned. He always felt that a dangerous person like Oyakata En coming to the orphanage had impure motives.
"Keisuke, do you know Mr. Oyakata well?" Nono'o asked softly, taking his hand to comfort him.
"We had a brief encounter once." Keisuke recounted the key points about Oyakata En. "In short, he is definitely a dangerous person!"
Walking out of the reception room side-by-side, Nono'o and Keisuke didn't know that Oyakata En wasn't the only "dangerous person" who had come to the orphanage today.
Just as the two of them left the room, the thin monk rushed over to report the news. "Matron, it's terrible." The monk's wrinkled forehead was covered in sweat, his voice intermittent and weak. "The nun... she's gone!"
The fat nun?
Nono'o and Keisuke exchanged a look, both simultaneously thinking of the recently departed Oyakata En. But in the next moment, the thin monk proactively presented a half-opened scroll. "The children and I just searched the surrounding area. In the end, a snake delivered this scroll."
A snake?!
Keisuke's brow rose. He signaled for the monk to place the scroll on the ground.
"Thank you for your trouble, Monk," Nono'o said, nodding to him. The latter knew the situation was special and didn't wait around, but turned and left. In the monk's view, it was best for a commoner like him not to get involved in matters between ninja.
After the monk had completely left, Keisuke formed hand signs and summoned a [Shadow Clone], having it pick up and open the "snake-delivered scroll." The message in the scroll was very complex and special; Keisuke couldn't understand it.
"This kind of text seems to require a special decryption symbol to be recognized."
"Yes..." Nono'o placed a hand on Keisuke's shoulder, her tone heavy. "This is Root's special contact script. The one who sent us this scroll is one of the Sannin, Orochimaru."
(Author's Note:)
Let's talk about the [Bringer-of-Darkness Technique]. The essence of genjutsu is a ninjutsu that uses the five senses as a basis to disturb the enemy's spiritual will. In the manga, the [Bringer-of-Darkness Technique] is an A-rank genjutsu used by the First Hokage, Senju Hashirama. In the anime, this genjutsu was changed to be used by the Second Hokage, Senju Tobirama.
The description of the [Bringer-of-Darkness Technique] in the "Tō no Sho" (Book of Fighting) is very simple, with basically no substance. It neither mentions that it is a "Yin Release genjutsu" nor that it is "another type of genjutsu." However, by organizing the descriptions of the Third Hokage's battle against the reanimated First and Second, I believe that the [Bringer-of-Darkness Technique] is a physical-type genjutsu similar to "Lightning Release: Lightning Flash Pillar." Just as described in this text, it uses one's own chakra to create an absolute dark physical environment, completely sealing the enemy's vision within that environment.
