Chapter 99: Dante’s Battle
Outside the arena, Dante and Focalors were sitting on a bench while discussing the previous battle. Focalors body was leaning on Dante under the pretext of still being exhausted. Meanwhile, Teddiursa was sleeping in between their lap.
On his shoulder, Pikachu suspiciously glanced at the two humans beside him. His Trainer already has a lover, why is he still acting so close with another human female? Is he…having an affair!? (*Shocked Pikachu Face*)
"Or maybe Hyper Beam may have enough power to stop him in the beginning."
"Nah, the risk of being immobilized right after is too great. You did a fantastic job, no need to doubt yourself."
"Is that so?"
Focalors pursed her lips as she lowered her head to contemplate. In truth, however, she was trying to hide the smile forming on her face after hearing Dante's praise.
'What's wrong with me!? Why does his compliment make me feel so…giddy? Remember, you're only pretending Focalors. You just need to get close to him and obtain the information.'
"It's taking quite a while. Do you want to go back to the lounge with Furina and Dawn to watch with them?"
"No, I can wait. And besides, I prefer being able to cheer for you up close."
Focalors took a deep breath and raised her head, her face returning to her placid expression. Looking at Dante, she suddenly asked.
"Do you have any updates about Shinobu? Her match should have also ended by now."
"Yeah, I tried connecting my phone earlier, but there's no signal here underground. I believe her though, she will definitely win."
The words on Focalors lips got stuck in her throat. Seeing Dante's confident expression, she swallowed back what she was about to say.
"Hmm, yeah, I hope so too."
While the two were talking, the stone door was pushed to the side and Pacal's figure finally appeared.
"Sorry for the wait, come inside. The arena's back to readiness!"
—
"Is it finally starting?"
"Yeah, the strongest newcomer is about to battle Mr. Pacal."
"Honestly, this isn't even a fair match. With Azumarill being a Water-type, he'd probably defeat Mr. Pacal's Ground Pokemon in one punch like he did with Ms. Erika's."
"What do you know? If Pokemon battle was only based on their typing, then there's no need to have a battle in the first place!"
"Please please win, Mr. Pacal. I bet all my allowance for this month on you!"
In resorts and places around the mountain, countless residents and tourists eagerly stare at the screen as they discuss the match between Dante and Pacal.
What Dante didn't know was that, when he submitted an appointment for battle the day before yesterday, the resorts around the mountain began to promote their fight. As the newest star among the younger generation of Trainers, many people are curious about him.
Is he really so strong? Or was his battle against Erika just a fluke?
Inside a private hot spring on the mountainside, two mature ladies were soaking in the water. A Lotad was floating in front of them, with snacks, a bottle of wine, and glasses on top of its leaf.
One of the women had light skin and red eyes with yellow sun-shaped forms around her reddish-yellow pupils. She has a red, knee-long, wavy hair with yellow undersides which resemble a flame.
Beside her sat an equally tall woman with light skin and bright green eyes with cat-like pupils. She had messy waves of pale blonde hair that faded to orange at the ends.
"Can you do it, Xilonen?"
The red-haired woman asked as she poured wine on both of their glasses.
"*Sigh* Yes, it would probably take me a week or so. Honestly, Mavuika, you spoil Hine too much."
Xilonen grabbed the glass Mavuika handed over and took a sip. Her green eyes narrowed in satisfaction as she tasted the sweet and fruity flavor of the drink.
"Haha, I knew you'd like it! It's a new class of wine made from a berry they recently found in a Pokeportal. They gave me a bottle to sample and after having a taste, I immediately thought of you."
"Yeah, thanks. It seems I need to place an order before it becomes famous."
Xilonen mused as she took another sip of the drink. At this moment, the show on the screen above them suddenly switched, exhibiting an underground battle arena with a white-haired boy and the Gym Leader Pacal facing off.
"Hmm, another challenger, huh. Pacal really doesn't have it easy. And he still insists on asking me to take his position."
"After all, he is getting older. And from what I've heard, none of the younger generations in your tribe have the strength to inherit the Ground Gym except for you."
Xilonen didn't bother to give Mavuika a response. She already had a backlog of orders just working as a blacksmith. If she took over the Gym, then she'd never have free time for herself ever again.
On the screen, the referee signaled the two sides to release their Pokemon. Seeing the white-haired boy release a Pikachu against Pacal's Hippowdon, Xilonen chuckled.
"It seems new Trainers today don't even bother learning about type-matchups. Choosing to challenge the Ground-type Gym with an Electric-type as a starter, hahaha!"
"You may not know him since you've holed yourself up in the forge, but that kid has recently been famous and was dubbed the 'Strongest Newcomer'."
"Oh?"
Xilonen raised her eyebrows in surprise. To obtain a title, and one so pretentious, means that what this guy did was definitely not something simple.
"Yeah, Hine wouldn't stop talking about him. His name is Dante. I watched his challenge against Erika… his Shiny Azumarill has mutated to become a monster."
Remembering Dante's match against the Grass-type Gym Leader, a solemn look flashed on Mavuika's face.
An Azumarill who has both the Huge Power and Sap Sipper, while powerful, was not enough for her to be dubbed as a monster. However, taking down a fully grown Venusaur with one attack means Azumarill may have also gained a higher racial limit than its species.
Xilonen looked back at the screen in interest. Being praised by Mavuika like that, this Dante guy should be promising indeed.
—
As soon as the referee signaled for the match to start, a sandstorm quickly whipped up in the arena courtesy of Hippowdon.
Dante looked at the large hippo-like Pokemon. Hippowdon is one of the only three species of Pokemon that has the Sand Stream Ability. Like Drought and Drizzle, Pokemon with the Sand Stream Ability can call upon the sandstorm at will.
By starting with Hippowdon, Pacal was basically telling him that his second Pokemon is someone who will thrive in the sandy environment.
"Hahaha! Dante, you want to use Pikachu to wear down my first Pokemon? Well then, let's see how much energy Hippowdon will have to consume to defeat him. Hippowdon, use Earthquake!"
"Hear that, Pikachu? He said you are just a distraction. Show him what you got buddy, use Trailblaze!"
"Pika!"
Pikachu angrily looked at Pacal. From the beginning, this guy only took Azumarill as his opponent. Well, he'll show him what an angry Pikachu is capable of!
With a bang, Pikachu kicked off the ground and headed towards Hippowdon, ignoring the whirling sands in the air. Behind him, patches of grass grew from where he stepped on as Grass-type energy gathered in his body.
Trailblaze is a physical Grass-type move with a base power of 50. By harnessing the Grass-type energy from the surroundings, the user can increase their speed.
Hippowdon had just stomped on the floor, causing the ground to begin shaking when Pikachu arrived and headbutted him. The Grass-type energy he gathered was released at the point of contact, making the Ground-type Hippowdon raise his head and cry in pain.
Before he could recover, Pikachu's body flashed with a white light as he used Quick Attack and hit Hippowdon in the jaw.
With the force of the two attacks, Hippowdown's huge body flipped in the air, landing back on the floor with a thud.
"Hippowdon!"
Pacal looked in disbelief as he saw his Pokemon lying there, unmoving. And when the referee withstood the sandstorm on the field and confirmed that Hippowdon had passed out, he turned an incredulous gaze at the Pikachu who was smiling provocatively.
"Hippowdon is unable to battle! Leader Pacal, please send out your second Pokemon! Gym Leader Pacal!"
Dante chuckled as he looked at the smug Pikachu and the unresponsive Pacal. When he last looked at Pikachu's stats, even he had been in a stupor. Right now, Pikachu's strength is already close to reaching the Legendary level!

"...well, I'll be! It seems Azumarill is not the only Pokemon I should have been wary of."
"Pika pika!"
Pacal took Hippowdon back into the Pokeball. Adjusting his sunglasses, he glanced at Pikachu and Dante before taking out a Pokeball from his belt.
"Now then, let's see whether you can take this on. Go, Sandslash!"
"Sanddd!"
Dante looked at Sandslash in the arena and confirmed his earlier guess. Sandslash has two Abilities that can only be activated during a sandstorm: Sand Veil and Sand Rush.
Sand Veil allows Sandslash to camouflage with the sand around him and increase his evasiveness. On the other hand, Sand Rush can double Sandslash's speed.
Among the two of them, most Trainers prefer Sand Rush over Sand Veil due to how much more offensive opportunity it allows. But for Dante, whatever Ability Sandslash has doesn't really matter.
After all, it can only take effect during sandstorms, right?
