I Have a Penglai Immortal Island

Chapter 032 – Yellowfin Tuna

Spending her first night on the ship without any wind or waves, Zhao Zhao found the bed in her cabin quite stable. Nowadays, she could meditate instead of sleeping. Locking the door, she took Gun Gun and entered Yaoguang's domain, only returning to her cabin at dawn.

Recently, during her free time, she made herself a few sets of clothes. Yaoguang didn’t provide any other fabric colors, so she had to mix and match the same few pieces. Today, she wore a new outfit: a yellow top and green pants. The top was retro-style with a stand-up collar and slanted front, featuring shimmering golden patterns. The pants were light green lantern pants, cropped to reveal her ankles. This outfit was light and lively, perfect for wearing on a boat.

After changing clothes, she spun around admiring herself in the mirror before leaving her room. In the pilothouse, Rao Jianyang had taken over from Xiong Quan. This man was worth his hire; he was competent in every position on the ship, almost a jack-of-all-trades. After chatting with him, she learned that if they sailed directly, they would leave China's territorial waters in about an hour.

The crew had already begun preparing breakfast. Zhao Zhao took Gun Gun and Yaoguang to the bow. Although the sun was up, a thick fog still hung over the sea, making everything invisible, a vast white expanse.

“Fog hides the ship’s bow, whales are lost on the sea.”

Zhao Zhao stretched lazily and recited. Yaoguang was surprised, “You can write poetry? What does that mean?”

“It’s normal for you not to understand. Lord Yaoguang, you need to read more! As a talking parrot spirit, you should be more knowledgeable. All the parrots here can recite poems. I’ll download the ‘Three Hundred Tang Poems’ for you later.” She was quite irritated after being watched while practicing her skills all night.

“There's a black-and-white flower fifteen miles southeast.” Finding whales wasn’t a problem.

Oh, this monster actually understood...

Zhao Zhao sat cross-legged on the lounge chair, spiritual energy covering her eyes, and looked ahead. Recently, her skills had improved a bit.

In the distance ahead were several large and small reefs and islands, along with many submerged reefs. The seabed had coral reefs, unlike those near Jinshi Island. The water temperature here was higher, suitable for coral growth, making it a famous reef area in China. The clear water and beautiful scenery were home to many colorful coral fish. If it weren't so far from the coastline and on the edge of territorial waters, it could be a diving paradise.

She focused on the fish in the sea. The colorful clownfish were not valuable, but some rare species were quite pricey, though she wasn’t very familiar with them. There were small schools of golden threadfin bream, sardines, bluefin trevally, and some unknown small fish that seemed to have little fishing value. She expanded her scope.

Huh? What a big fish! Large, spindle-shaped bodies, round, with silver stripes and yellow fins—tuna! Yellowfin tuna.

While yellowfin tuna weren’t as valuable as their cousin, bluefin tuna, they were still a significant marine economic fish.

Being less rare made yellowfin tuna plentiful and readily caught. They could grow up to over three meters. The school she found mostly measured over two meters, roughly seventy to eighty fish, with the smallest being over eighty centimeters. This was an unusually large school.

Typically, these large fish didn’t move in such large numbers because a single sea area couldn’t support so many yellowfin tuna's hunting needs. Perhaps two schools had met here? Regardless, this was a lucky find, and hauling them in would make a great start for the new ship.

Since leaving the dock, they hadn’t cast a single net, waiting for a good start for the new ship. Uncle Haiming on board was quite superstitious and believed this first haul would be significant.

Zhao Zhao picked up the intercom and notified the pilothouse, “Brother Rao, turn to two o’clock, and inform Uncle Haiming to prepare the nets. Use the large-mesh net.”

Breakfast was ending in the Western Restaurant. Upon hearing the order to cast nets, everyone quickly finished their food and went to their workstations. Da Linzi ran to the pilothouse, “Brother Rao, did the radar detect a school of fish?”

Rao Jianyang scratched his head. He looked at the fish finder, but there was nothing within the detection range. Was it possible he didn't understand the new model of fishing boat? No, he had only been away from the sea for two years...

"Your sister gave the order to turn and cast the net. I haven't seen the school of fish yet," Rao Jianyang replied honestly.

Da Linzi ran to the bow to ask his sister. Zhao Zhao directly blamed Siren, saying it had come from there with a tuna in its mouth. Whether others believed it or not didn’t concern her.

Upon hearing that Uncle Haiming was ready with the nets, Zhao Zhao began directing the route, accelerating towards the fish. Yaoguang, dragging the massive net, followed her instructions to encircle the fish. The fish finder finally showed a large school of fish, and cheers erupted from the pilothouse.

“Slightly to the right, accelerate towards one o’clock.” Watching the lead fish trying to escape also fall into the net, she ordered the net to be hauled up. They managed to catch about eighty percent of the yellowfin tuna, which was excellent. The rest could form a new school; it wasn’t good to catch them all at once.

Upon ordering the net to be hauled up, Uncle Haiming came over again, “Why so fast? It hasn’t been long enough. Rao Jianyang said there are fish below. The winch uses a lot of fuel going up and down.” He almost said she was messing around...

“Uncle Haiming, didn’t we agree? When I’m on the ship, listen to me. When I’m not, listen to you. Trust me, the school has scattered. Keeping the net down won’t help. Even Siren has gone off to play elsewhere.”

Da Linzi, knowing Siren’s intelligence well, had no doubts. He pulled Uncle Haiming away, “Uncle Haiming, trust Zhao Zhao. Siren is reliable! Let’s haul up the net.”

Uncle Haiming, having never encountered a killer whale before, was confused. What did it mean to follow the killer whale’s lead in fishing? Half-believing, he followed to haul up the net.

As the winch reeled in the net, he realized this net was solid. Having fished for so many years, he was thrilled and urged the crew to hurry.

“Move quickly, Da Shanzi! You’ve been fishing for years, why are you fumbling? You can’t even carry a box without tripping!”

Da Shanzi, smiling, said, “I’ve fished for years, but I’ve never been on such a new, advanced boat. Almost tripped on the shiny new door.”

Uncle Haiming scolded him, and the deck erupted in laughter.

They soon had no time to laugh, as they gasped at the sight of the heavy, full net being lifted. It was a spectacular and overwhelming scene.

“Oh my heavens!”

“Holy crap! Holy crap!”

“Yellowfin tuna! We’ve struck gold!”

“We’re going to be rich…”

Xiong Haiming was the first to react. “Why are you all standing around? Get to work! Handle them carefully; damaged fish won't fetch a good price. Start bleeding them out!”

The ship stopped, and everyone crowded onto the deck. Da Linzi and Rao Jianyang also pitched in, and even Xiong Quan, who had only slept for three hours, came to help.

“Oh my god, it’s my first time seeing a net full of tuna like sardines…”

Like bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna are warm-blooded fish that die as soon as they come ashore. If their blood isn’t drained quickly, it will spoil the meat, affecting its taste and quality. Xiong Haiming demonstrated how to make a horizontal cut near the tail fin to let the blood drain out completely before sending the fish to the freezing compartment. He was well-versed in this from his days working for a large deep-sea fishing company.

Yellowfin tuna can sell for 40 yuan per jin (half a kilogram) at the dock. A large fish on the deck could fetch around ten thousand yuan. Calculating in his mind, Xiong Haiming felt completely at ease. Even if they returned now, they had already made a significant profit. This job was proving to be worthwhile.
