Chapter 22: The Game With No Winners
The announcement rang out like thunder, shattering the fragile calm of the morning.
"ALL PARTICIPANTS REPORT TO THE GAME AREA IMMEDIATELY."
June's tray slipped from her hands, clattering to the floor, untouched. The sound echoed, jarring. She didn't move.
Miguel stood and reached for her hand. "Come on," he said gently.
She nodded, but her body felt like stone.
The game room was unlike any before.
No moving platforms. No glowing lights. Just cold, grey concrete and a steel table in the center. Atop the table sat a glass case. Inside it, a single revolver gleamed under a flickering bulb.
Miguel and June stood in silence, staring.
Across the facility, others entered similar rooms.
Room 2, Maeve and Hideo. Room 3, Tobi and a wiry man with wild eyes. Room 4, Alyssa and a frail old woman.
In every room, something shimmered above the gun.
A god appeared simultaneously.
He looked the same in all places, a chaotic swirl of colors, wearing a crooked judge's robe, half of his face painted like a clown. The other half was a screaming skull.
He grinned with jagged, too-wide teeth.
"HELLOOOO, my little vermin!"
His voice echoed through the walls.
"I am JAXOR, THE GOD OF CONSEQUENCE!"
He floated upside down, spinning lazily.
"This game is simple," he purred.
"One gun. One bullet. Thirty minutes."
"Kill your partner and gain 300 tokens."
"Or, if you're feeling righteous, put the gun to your own head. Blow your conscience into the walls. And the other gets the reward."
He spun, laughed, then leaned in, whispering across dimensions.
"If neither of you pulls the trigger in 30 minutes, the gun will disappear... and so will both of you."
He clapped. "Tick tock, kiddos!"
Then he vanished.
Room 1 in June's and Miguel's room.
June collapsed to her knees.
"No… no no no no no…"
Miguel was already at her side, arms wrapping around her.
She was trembling so violently it hurt to watch.
"We don't have to... we can't..."
"I know," Miguel said softly. "I know."
But his voice was calm.
Resolved.
"I can't do this," she whispered. "Not with you. Anyone but you."
Miguel rested his forehead against hers. "Shhh. Breathe."
She clutched him, as if holding him tight would keep him from vanishing.
Room 2 in Maeve's and Hideo's room.
Hideo chuckled lightly. "I'm old, Maeve."
"Don't you dare," Maeve snapped.
"I've lived. You haven't. You're still fire. Still teeth."
"There has to be another way."
"There isn't."
"I'll fight you for it," she growled.
"I'd win," he said kindly.
Room 3 in Tobi's and Jack's room.
The man grinned, showing yellow teeth.
"Name's Jack. I killed seventeen people in life."
Tobi stepped back.
"Died falling down the stairs like a damn cartoon," Jack laughed. "But this? This I can savor."
Tobi's fists clenched.
Room 4 in Alyssa's and Karen's room.
The old woman clutched her arms.
"I don't want to die," she said, voice thin.
Alyssa stared at her.
"I've seen too much. Lost too much."
Karen looked up with watery eyes. "Please."
TIME REMAINING: 01:00
Room 2
Maeve made a run for the table.
Hideo moved faster.
A sharp kick to her shin. A punch to the stomach.
She fell.
"Damn... feck you, gramps!"
He laughed. "Take care of Tobi. He's a good kid. You make a cute couple."
He raised the gun.
"Tell June... I'm proud of her."
And then... boom.
His body hit the ground.
+300 TOKENS ADDED TO MAEVE'S PIGGY
She screamed.
Room 3
Jack lunged.
They grappled. Screamed.
He bit Tobi in the neck.
Pain.
Blood.
But then, Miguel's voice echoed in memory.
"Elbows. Fast. Hard."
Tobi drove an elbow down.
Again.
Again.
Blood sprayed. Jack dropped the gun.
Tobi mounted him. Raised the weapon.
Hesitated.
Jack smiled through the blood.
"Do it."
Bang.
+300 TOKENS ADDED TO TOBI'S PIGGY
Room 4
Alyssa moved first.
The old woman couldn't even raise a hand.
"Please," Karen whispered. "I'm scared."
Alyssa's hand shook.
"You lived your life. I haven't."
Bang.
Karen slumped.
+300 TOKENS ADDED TO ALYSSA'S PIGGY
Alyssa dropped the gun and fell to her knees, sobbing into her hands.
Room 1, June's and Miguel's room.
The glass opened.
Miguel stood. And June followed slowly.
June's voice cracked. "Don't."
He picked up the revolver.
"Give it to me," she begged.
"No."
He turned to her.
She reached out, desperate.
He pulled her close.
And kissed her.
A deep, burning, final kiss.
Then he pushed her gently away.
"I love you," he said. "And I have one request."
He smiled.
"Win this entire thing."
Then...
BOOM
His body dropped.
Blood pooled around his head.
+300 TOKENS ADDED TO JUNE'S PIGGY
June stared in silence.
And then she screamed.
A sound that shattered the walls of her heart.
And something inside her... broke.
Forever.
