Chapter 19: The Price of Trust
The chamber doors slammed shut behind them with a hydraulic hiss.
June spun around, but the others were already gone. Separated. Sealed away.
The new room was cold, metallic walls, no exits. Harsh white lights glared down from above. In the center stood a transparent pedestal, and on it, two orbs rested in perfect balance.
One black.
One white.
June took a step forward and then a figure shimmered into existence above the pedestal.
She wasn't like Strykon.
Where he was fire and fury, this goddess was elegance incarnate. Floating above them, bathed in deep violet light, she wore a sleek suit of mirrored armor, her face a flawless, unreadable mask of glass that shimmered with faint starfields.
She did not blink.
She did not breathe.
She simply was.
And then she spoke.
Smooth. Measured. Icy.
"Greetings, participants. I am VIRESSA, GODDESS OF EQUITY."
June shivered.
The name echoed around the room, echoed through every room, projected into each cell of the game.
"Today's challenge is simple. This is a test of honesty. Of trust. Of betrayal."
The black orb pulsed gently.
"One of these is STEAL. The other is SPLIT."
The white orb pulsed in turn.
"If both players choose SPLIT, you will each be rewarded with 100 tokens."
"If one chooses SPLIT, and the other chooses STEAL, the one who STEALS will gain 300 tokens and the other will be erased."
The pause that followed was crushing.
"If both choose STEAL... you will both be erased. Immediately."
The words felt like acid in June's chest.
"You have 30 minutes to speak freely. At the end, you will each place your hand on the orb of your choice. Alone. Privately. Choose wisely. Let the game… begin."
Viressa vanished in a flicker of ultraviolet light.
June turned and her heart sank.
Across the room stood Alyssa.
Her arms were crossed. Her expression unreadable.
"Of course," Alyssa muttered. "Figures they'd put me with you."
June's fists clenched.
Room 2 – Tobi & Maeve
Maeve stared at the two orbs and let out a bitter laugh.
"This is gonna be a damn prisoner's dilemma, huh?"
Tobi scratched the back of his neck. "It's twisted. If we both pick split, we're good. But if one of us flips…"
He didn't finish.
Maeve smirked. "You think I'm gonna betray you?"
He looked up, serious. "I'm not."
She held his gaze for a long moment.
Then snorted.
"Good. 'Cause if you did, I'd haunt your ass."
Room 3 – Hideo & Stranger
His opponent was a tall, broad-shouldered man with weathered skin and a lined face, clearly another veteran, maybe a soldier once.
They sat in silence at first.
Then the man said, "I've got a daughter. I'm not here to play games."
Hideo nodded. "I have a daughter."
They stared at each other.
Measured.
Careful.
Neither blinked.
"Split?" the man asked.
Hideo's lips twitched. "Only if you do."
Room 4 – Miguel & Woman
The woman was quiet.
Dignified.
Older, maybe in her 50s. She wore her purple suit with pride, posture perfect, like someone used to command.
Miguel didn't smile, but he gave her a respectful nod.
"You gonna steal?"
"No," she said simply. "And you?"
He tilted his head. "Depends."
"On what?"
Miguel crossed his arms. "On whether I can trust you."
The woman raised an eyebrow. "And how will you decide that?"
He didn't answer.
He just looked toward the wall.
Toward where he knew June was.
Back to Room 1 – June & Alyssa
The silence was a wall between them.
June finally broke it.
"I'm not going to steal."
Alyssa tilted her head. "And why should I believe you?"
"Because I've never lied to you. Even when I could have."
Alyssa snorted. "You didn't tell me you and Miguel were together."
"We weren't. Not really. Not until now."
"You think that makes it better?" Alyssa asked, eyes narrowing. "You act like you're this broken little thing no one could ever love, but somehow, he does. You really think I'm gonna trust you not to take the safe way out?"
June looked away.
Quiet.
She didn't argue.
She didn't cry.
She just said, "I'm picking split. Whether you do or not."
"You sure?" Alyssa asked.
June nodded. "Yeah. I'd rather die honest than live with your blood on my hands."
Alyssa's face didn't move.
But something behind her eyes shifted.
For a second.
Then she stood. "We'll see."
The silence after Alyssa's "we'll see" didn't last long.
June sat down across from her, folding her arms. "You don't have to like me. I don't need that. But you're not the only person in this room who's been through hell."
Alyssa scoffed. "Don't compare your sob story to mine."
"I'm not. I'm just not letting you pretend you're the only one who hurts," June replied, voice low but firm.
Alyssa's gaze sharpened. "You've got everything now, huh? Miguel's attention, your little support group. Playing the tragic underdog, and everyone eats it up."
June's jaw tightened. "If you think I wanted this… that I chose this, being alone, being hated, being broken, then you don't know me at all."
"Oh, I know you," Alyssa snapped. "Sad little background character who finally got a spotlight and doesn't know what to do with it."
June stood, eyes burning. "You know what? Say what you want. Tear me down if it makes you feel bigger. But I'm not going to stoop to your level."
Alyssa stood too, fists clenched.
The room pulsed with tension. The timer counted down above them.
00:04:22
June's voice didn't shake.
"I'm picking split. Because I'm not like you. And I never will be."
Alyssa stared at her.
Then walked toward the selection chamber, back rigid, fury crackling off her in waves.
Room 2 – Tobi & Maeve
Maeve tossed another round of rock-paper-scissors. "HA! That's three in a row."
Tobi groaned. "You got cheater hands."
She snorted. "Just quick reflexes. I was raised on street poker and backyard wrestling."
Tobi grinned. "Well, don't arm wrestle me. I'd cry."
They laughed.
No fear.
No suspicion.
They knew.
Both would pick split. No doubts. No betrayals.
Just friends in a hell designed to turn them into enemies.
Room 3 - Hideo & John
The man sat with his arms behind his head, relaxed. Comfortable.
"Yeah, my daughter was always a problem," John said, voice casual. "Smart mouth. Soft. Weak. I tried to toughen her up. Beat the softness out. Didn't work."
Hideo kept his face still.
"You know what she did once?" John chuckled. "Cried in public because I made her scrub the toilet with her own toothbrush. Can you believe that? Like I didn't feed her or give her a roof."
Hideo nodded slowly. "What was her name?"
"June," John said without hesitation. "Little leech. Always staring at people like they owed her something. I told her no one would love her if she didn't stop acting weird."
Hideo's stomach turned.
His fists clenched beneath the table.
But he smiled, polite and cool. "Tough love."
John laughed. "Exactly. Finally, someone who gets it."
The timer ticked down above them.
00:02:07
"I'm glad they put me with you," John said, stretching. "Bet we're both picking split."
Hideo smiled.
But his eyes were dead.
Room 4 – Miguel & Jenny
The resemblance hit him after a minute.
The angle of her jaw. The tilt of her eyes. Like an older mirror version of someone he loved.
"You have a daughter?" he asked carefully.
Jenny raised her chin. "Yeah. June."
His blood ran cold.
She smiled thinly. "Useless girl. Never cried like a baby, but always so cold. Like a dead fish. I tried to make her feel. But nothing worked."
Miguel's fingers dug into the metal bench.
"I bet she's here somewhere," Jenny continued. "Still trying to make everyone feel sorry for her."
"What was she like?" Miguel asked calmly.
Jenny leaned in, voice sharp. "Disrespectful. Ungrateful. Thought she was too good for me. Always in her books, acting better than everyone. Always looking at me with those creepy, empty eyes. I should've..."
"You're a horrible mother," Miguel said flatly.
Jenny's smile faltered. "Excuse me?"
He stood slowly. "I'm going to split. You should too."
She narrowed her eyes, mistrust creeping in. "Fine."
Decision Time
00:00:15
00:00:10
00:00:05
00:00:00
Each door opened one by one.
Room 1 – June & Alyssa
Alyssa exited first. Angry. Eyes hard.
June followed, face blank.
The pedestals lit up.
SPLIT
SPLIT
The system chimed.
+100 TOKENS ADDED TO BOTH PIGGY ACCOUNTS
June blinked, stunned.
"…Why?" she asked.
Alyssa didn't look at her.
"I still hate you," she muttered. "But you're good. And I'm not a killer."
June stared at her for a long moment.
Then smiled. Just a little.
Even through the annoyance.
Room 2 – Maeve & Tobi
They stepped out grinning.
Both chose SPLIT.
+100 TOKENS ADDED TO BOTH PIGGY ACCOUNTS
"Easy money," Maeve laughed, nudging Tobi.
"Wanna rematch?" he grinned.
Room 3 – Hideo & John
John stepped out first, smiling.
Then looked at the pedestal.
STEAL – HIDEO
SPLIT – JOHN
"No… wait, what..."
The air around him began to crackle.
His skin peeled in sheets of light.
He screamed, thrashing as erasure overtook him.
"WHY?! YOU SAID..."
Hideo stood still. Cold. Calm.
"You don't deserve a daughter like her."
John's screams turned to static.
And then he was gone.
+300 TOKENS ADDED TO PIGGY ACCOUNT – HIDEO
Hideo exhaled slowly.
And walked away.
Room 4 – Miguel & Jenny
Jenny came out smiling. "See? Told you I'd split."
Then the pedestal lit up.
STEAL – MIGUEL
SPLIT – JENNY
Jenny stared in shock. "What?"
Then the agony hit.
White-hot beams sliced through her.
She dropped to her knees, eyes wide with horror.
"WHY?! I THOUGHT...!"
Miguel stepped forward, voice like iron.
"You hurt the woman I love."
Jenny's last look was one of disbelief.
She vanished screaming.
+300 TOKENS ADDED TO PIGGY ACCOUNT – MIGUEL
Miguel turned, jaw tight.
And whispered, "Never again."
