Chapter 29: Chapter 28: Just Smiling
The president emerged from the restroom inside the tourist information center after about five minutes.
"Have you been waiting long?"
"Not at all. I was just looking at a map of the Asakusa area."
As I said this, pointing to the large map posted on the bulletin board in front of the information center, the president glanced at it with a curious expression.
Centered around Asakusa's landmark, Sensoji Temple, the path we had walked was condensed on the map.
"Now that I think about it, I heard there's a famous promenade around here."
"Shall we check it out after we finish picking out gifts?"
"That sounds nice. It's the season when wisteria flowers are in full bloom."
When it comes to flower viewing in Japan, cherry blossoms often come to mind first, but the wisteria that blooms around April or May is just as stunning. The sight of purple flowers cascading along the path is quite a spectacle.
Chatting amiably, we headed toward our final destination: a kimono shop in Asakusa.
---
The kimono shop was located inside an arcade shopping street, slightly off from the central Sensoji area. Various colorful fabrics hung outside like curtains, exuding the charm of a traditional textile store.
*Creak—*
"Excuse us."
As we slid open the door and stepped into the quaint shop, the middle-aged shopkeeper at the counter greeted us warmly.
"Oh my, what are you students here to buy?"
The president, lightly tapping her fan against her palm, responded.
"I'd like to see some kimonos and yukatas. Price isn't an issue, so please show us the best you have."
The shopkeeper flinched for a moment before letting out a hearty laugh and standing up.
"If that's what you're after, just wait a moment~"
As the shopkeeper began rummaging through a drawer behind the counter, the president turned to me and asked.
"What colors do you think would suit a foreigner?"
I rubbed my chin and replied.
"Well, it depends on the person, doesn't it? I'd say safe colors are probably best. Black, white, or maybe blue?"
"Hmm. Let's take a look at the items first and pick out a few that seem nice."
Soon, the shopkeeper returned with five bamboo boxes, placing them on the table and explaining their contents.
"These three are kimonos, and these two are yukatas. Prices for clothing can vary widely, but for ready-made items, the best kimono in our shop costs around 500,000 yen. Yukatas are a bit cheaper."
Opening the first box, the shopkeeper revealed a black kimono adorned with vibrant floral patterns. It was clearly a cut above mid-range kimonos in terms of elegance.
However, the president, whose taste in such matters was discerning, seemed slightly dissatisfied. She pointed her fan at the next box.
"Can we see that one too?"
"Of course."
The second box contained a white kimono with plum blossoms embroidered in gold thread. Unlike the bold black kimono, this one exuded a refined, understated beauty.
This seemed to catch the president's fancy, as her usually stern expression softened slightly. Still, determined to see everything before deciding, she promptly asked to view the next item.
One by one, they went through the boxes.
After examining all five kimonos and yukatas, the president narrowed it down to two: the white kimono she had liked from the start and a simpler blue yukata with morning glory patterns.
To me, both looked beautiful, but the president appeared deep in thought, clearly torn.
Noticing her hesitation, the shopkeeper, who had been watching, offered a suggestion.
"Why don't you try them on, dear?"
"Me?" the president asked.
"Even if it's for a gift, trying it on yourself isn't a bad idea when you're unsure."
The suggestion seemed appealing, but the president hesitated before turning to me.
"What do you think, Kim Yuseong-kun?"
Caught off guard by the question, I thought it over briefly. It didn't seem like a bad idea.
"Wouldn't trying them on help you decide?"
A faint smile curved her lips as she nodded.
"Hehe, alright then. I'll try them on."
"Come this way. There's an empty room inside," the shopkeeper said, guiding her.
Since putting on a kimono would take some time, I figured I'd play a game on my phone while waiting.
---
"Welcome, miss."
"Eek!"
Saionji Kumiko, led by the shopkeeper into the empty room, gasped in surprise upon seeing Minami, who had apparently been waiting there for some time.
"M-Minami, how are you here?"
"While you were stalling, I came ahead and reserved the shop for an hour. The owner kindly agreed."
"Hehe, it's my first time acting, but it's quite fun."
"You're doing great, so just keep it up."
It was clear the two had coordinated beforehand, as they exchanged words casually.
Covering her mouth with her fan, Kumiko said, "So the suggestion to try on the kimono was…"
"My idea," Minami replied. "It seems you didn't notice, miss."
"Tch! I really didn't."
Kumiko clenched her fist, visibly frustrated, but the shopkeeper gently grabbed her shoulder.
"Now, now, we're short on time. Your boyfriend out there must be eagerly waiting."
"W-W-What?! We're not like that yet!"
"Yet, you say? Ohohoho, how adorable."
The shopkeeper, who had been playing her role convincingly, covered her mouth with her sleeve and laughed. Kumiko's face turned tomato-red.
Guided by the shopkeeper, Kumiko stood in front of a mirror. Minami bowed slightly and reached toward her.
"Excuse me, miss."
"I'll make you look as beautiful as possible," the shopkeeper added.
"Eek! Not there!"
*Swish! Rustle!*
---
*Creak!*
Hearing the sliding door open, I looked up from my phone.
And I couldn't help but hold my breath.
"H-How do I look?"
The president, averting her gaze and tucking her hair behind her ear, asked softly.
I couldn't answer right away.
Her appearance in the kimono was beyond my imagination.
Golden plum blossoms were embroidered along the white sleeves. The red obi tied around her waist added a striking contrast to the pristine kimono, enhancing its beauty.
And the finishing touch was her delicate features. Her straight, jet-black hair cascaded beautifully over the white kimono, like a princess from a bygone era. Her lips, lightly touched with rouge, stood out against her fair skin, making her even more captivating.
"…You look beautiful."
It was all I could manage after much deliberation. Honestly, no better words came to mind.
I couldn't help but think she should dress like this more often. As that thought crossed my mind—
"R-Really?"
Blushing, the president nodded. To hide her embarrassment, she snapped open her black fan and let out her signature laugh.
"Ohohohoho! I may keep my true power hidden, but when I get serious, this is the result!"
That was the president I knew. I clapped, playing along.
"Impressive, President."
"Alright! I'll try on the yukata next, so wait just a bit!"
Pointing her fan at me, she hurriedly retreated back into the room.
I gave a wry smile at her familiar antics and returned to my phone game while waiting for her to change.
---
Saionji Kumiko had been certain.
She was confident that showing herself in a kimono would make Kim Yuseong fall for her. With such faith in her beauty, she stepped through the sliding door without hesitation to face him.
But the moment their eyes met, her mind went blank.
She had prepared all sorts of flirty lines beforehand, but now, face-to-face, nothing came to mind. It was as if her brain had turned into a blank sheet of paper.
Avoiding his gaze, she managed to squeak out, "H-How do I look?"
Whether her voice was too soft or he needed time to think, Kim Yuseong didn't respond immediately.
*Is it not good? Was I the only one who thought it looked nice? What if he says it doesn't suit me?*
In that fleeting moment, countless negative thoughts raced through her mind.
"…You look beautiful."
With those words from Kim Yuseong, her worries melted away like snow.
"R-Really?"
Her face burned.
She hadn't done anything, but it felt like the entire shop had turned on the heat, her whole body warming up.
It was just like that day.
The day she reunited with Kim Yuseong under the pretext of recruiting him for the student council. Her irrepressible affection threatened to spill onto her face.
"Ohohohoho! I may keep my true power hidden, but when I get serious, this is the result!"
She hid her face behind her fan.
She couldn't bear to look at him any longer.
"Impressive, President."
"Alright! I'll try on the yukata next, so wait just a bit!"
*Creak! Thud!*
Slipping behind the sliding door, Kumiko pressed her burning cheeks with both hands and muttered, "What do I do…?"
As a direct descendant of the great Saionji family and the student council president of Ichijo Academy, Saionji Kumiko was now—
Caught in the fever of love.
