Chapter 433: Heart Matters
Ye Chen also said, "I'm the same as her."
"Okay, please wait a moment."
Then the server left.
Lin Yaru turned her head to look at Ye Chen and smiled, "How come? You also like sweets?"
Hearing Lin Yaru's words, Ye Chen helplessly shook his head and said with a bitter smile, "As a child, I always got very tired after going out to play, and at night after dinner, I loved sneaking several pieces of Black Forest cake from the fridge for a midnight snack."
Now, although Ye Chen is nominally Lin Yaru's bodyguard, the way the two get along is more like friends, which is why Ye Chen would share the most secretive things in his heart with Lin Yaru.
Seeing Ye Chen's somewhat dejected expression, Lin Yaru couldn't help but be reminded of her own childhood experiences, her eyes turning slightly red.
However, she didn't let herself show a vulnerable side and put on a relaxed front instead, "In that case, you should then join me more often for some sweets."
"Sure." Ye Chen replied with a smile.
Before long, the server came over with two cups of coffee.
"Thank you." Lin Yaru politely thanked the server.
Ye Chen stretched out his hand to take the coffee, took a sip, and then set it down.
He had no interest in coffee, let alone drinking it.
"You just said that as a child, you would eat Black Forest cake for a late-night snack after coming home?" Lin Yaru asked with curiosity, looking at Ye Chen as if very interested.
"Yeah." Ye Chen nodded in response.
"Why? You know that sweets are bad for the body, yet you couldn't resist sneaking some out for a midnight snack?" Lin Yaru pressed on.
Ye Chen replied with a faint smile, "Because my family was poor when I was little. We got used to eating whatever we had."
Hearing this, Lin Yaru fell silent.
After a long while, she finally spoke slowly, "Was your family really that poor when you were a child?"
She remembered that Ye Chen once told her that he grew up in an orphanage and that his parents died when he was very young. She had never heard Ye Chen talk about his family situation.
"Yeah, even poorer than you might imagine," Ye Chen said indifferently, as if accustomed to it.
"You must have suffered a lot when you were young. It's really lucky you survived. But don't worry from now on. As long as your sister is here, I won't let anyone bully you!" Lin Yaru declared solemnly.
Hearing Lin Yaru's words, Ye Chen simply smiled and gestured with his hand, signaling that Lin Yaru need not worry about him; he'd already forgotten the hardships of his childhood.
"By the way, why did you ask me out today? Could it be you wanted to invite me to a candlelight dinner?" Ye Chen changed the subject.
"Is there something wrong with that? Don't you think our relationship has been developing quite quickly?" Lin Yaru said with a playful smile.
Ye Chen rolled his eyes and pouted, "I'm just your bodyguard and driver. What kind of relationship can we develop?"
"That's because you haven't fully adapted to your current identity yet. Once you do, our relationship won't just be limited to this!" Lin Yaru said.
"Oh." Ye Chen shrugged nonchalantly, clearly not quite convinced.
Seeing this, Lin Yaru muttered something to herself but didn't explain further.
Then, Lin Yaru looked at Ye Chen and asked, "Ye Chen, I heard you're a fishing master and also do live streaming online. You're quite famous, right?"
"It's passable," Ye Chen modestly replied.
"How did you become successful?" Lin Yaru asked.
After a brief moment of contemplation, Ye Chen answered, "Actually, there's nothing much to it. I've just been quite lucky!"
"Hmph! You're lying again; I don't believe it—you must have some tricks up your sleeve!" Lin Yaru glared at Ye Chen with dissatisfaction.
She knew Ye Chen very well; he was clearly brushing her off.
"Why don't you just continue telling me why you wanted to meet up today?" Ye Chen quickly changed the subject to avoid Lin Yaru pestering him about other matters.
"You… You big jerk, I'm not talking to you anymore!" Lin Yaru said angrily.
However, she didn't really get mad in the end because she knew this was just how Ye Chen was.
Ye Chen touched his nose helplessly; he wasn't good at coaxing girls, especially pretty ones like Lin Yaru.
Then, Lin Yaru took a deep breath, trying hard to calm herself down, and with her usual cool and intelligent demeanor, she asked Ye Chen, "By the way, Ye Chen, I want to ask you something!"
"Go ahead!"
"At the banquet hall yesterday, how did you manage to take down that group of wealthy young masters?"
"That group of wealthy young masters? Which group?" Ye Chen asked, somewhat puzzled.
"Who else but the ones who bullied me?" Lin Yaru said, a bit annoyed.
"Uh... you mean, those people at the banquet hall yesterday?" Ye Chen clarified.
"Yes, who else besides them?" Lin Yaru continued.
"I really don't know. After knocking them down yesterday, they just passed out, and I didn't pay them any attention," Ye Chen said, spreading his hands in innocence.
He was indeed telling the truth; he really hadn't cared about those people at all.
"I don't know if you're playing dumb or are really stupid, daring to take all of them down. Aren't you a bit too bold!" Lin Yaru said angrily.
"I've always been bold; don't you know that?" Ye Chen said with a smile.
Lin Yaru was rendered speechless.
"So, did you just want to ask me about this matter?" Ye Chen continued to ask.
"Of course not. There's another important thing I want to tell you!" Lin Yaru looked at Ye Chen earnestly.
"What is it?" Ye Chen raised his eyebrows slightly.
Lin Yaru was silent for a moment before gritting her teeth and asking, "Do you like me?"
"Pfft—" Ye Chen almost spit out his tea; he really hadn't expected Lin Yaru to suddenly ask that.
However, upon closer observation, Ye Chen noticed that Lin Yaru wasn't joking.
This left Ye Chen stunned.
"Hey, Ye Chen, why are you spacing out? I'm asking you a question here. Do you like me or not?" Lin Yaru urged him hastily when he didn't reply for a while.
"Well… I've really never thought about that." After hesitating for a long time, Ye Chen spoke slowly.
He indeed hadn't considered whether he liked Lin Yaru or not, as all he felt towards her recently was a sense of kinship or a responsibility but not romantic affection.
Lin Yaru frowned, "What? You've never thought about it?"
Ye Chen scratched his head awkwardly and said, "Yeah, I don't have any special feelings for you, not even emotions like liking."
"I thought you might have fallen for me," Lin Yaru sighed, her face filled with disappointment.
Seeing Lin Yaru's disappointed expression, Ye Chen felt guilty and quickly comforted her, "I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to like you."
Lin Yaru shook her head lightly and said, "It's okay, I guessed as much. If you really had feelings for me, you probably would have confessed to me by now."
