Chapter 44: The Night Cult
Kenjiro yawned, stretching his arms over his head as he sat up in bed. The morning light streamed through his window, but a figure was already sitting in the armchair in the corner, watching him.
"Good morning, my precious Lily," Ryo said with a smile.
"Oh, hey," Kenjiro mumbled, still half-asleep. "What are you doing here?"
Ryo got up, walked over, and gently bonked him on the head with a data tablet. "Next quest for you."
Kenjiro took the tablet, his eyes widening as he read the details.
Mission Rank: B
Objective: Investigate the activities of a suspected "Night Cult."
Caution: Members have been seen using strange magic. A tank is required.
Intel: They keep talking about some kind of "03 being."
"Oooh, that could be good for us," Kenjiro said, a smirk forming on his face. "I'm gonna call the team. Leave it to me."
Ryo nodded, sending the location details to Kenjiro's LilyPad. As he walked out of the room, he blew a kiss over his shoulder.
Kenjiro immediately opened his party's group chat. "Okay guys, we are going on a quest. Meet me in the main hall in one hour." The replies were almost instant. Everyone nodded in agreement.
This was perfect. He went to his closet and pulled out the new, armored battle bunny suit. He put it on, feeling the familiar surge of confidence from its stats, and headed to the hall to wait for his group.
Kaito, Gluteus, and Lyrielle arrived first. "Where's DragonSlayer?" Kenjiro asked.
"I'm here," a strained voice said from his side. DragonSlayer69 was standing right next to him, but he was staring intently at the floor, refusing to look directly at Kenjiro.
"Why is your face so red?" Kenjiro asked, tilting his head.
"It is because Bombom is extremely beautiful today," Gluteus explained matter-of-factly, "and is making DragonSlayer feel something for our dear Bombom."
DragonSlayer's face went an even deeper shade of red. "H-hey! I'm not falling for him! I'm just... trying to stay focused!"
A wicked smirk spread across Kenjiro's face. He turned his back to the warrior, deliberately swaying his hips. "Oh no," he said with fake concern. "We should probably let DragonSlayer stay out this time. Because today... I'll be fighting on the front line."
A trickle of blood ran from DragonSlayer's nose. "Y-yeah! N-no problem! I will come with you guys!" he stammered, his resolve crumbling.
Damn it, that didn't work, Kenjiro pouted internally. I wanted him out today.
"B-Bombom," Lyrielle said, her own cheeks flushed. "Y-you're super cute t-today. Isn't that suit... expensive?"
Kaito, remembering his credit card statement, felt a single, dramatic tear roll down his cheek.
Kenjiro just laughed. "It is super expensive, but someone gave it to me. Alright, we should go to the location."
He led his flustered party to their personal driver, and they all piled into the armored car, heading off to investigate the mysterious cult.
The armored car drove them into the deepening twilight. The sky, once a clear blue, had turned a bruised purple, and a sudden, cold rain began to fall. They arrived at the designated location—the edge of a dark, forgotten forest. As they stepped out, a man in a drenched red robe emerged from the trees.
"I'm your intel," he said, his voice a low whisper, not giving a name. "They are gathering. In the abandoned church deep in these woods. I'll leave you all to it."
"W-wait!" Bombom called out, but the man had already leaped back into the forest, vanishing into the shadows as if he were never there.
The group pressed on, following a barely-there path until they found it: a massive, ancient church, its stone walls covered in moss and its spires crumbling. The architecture was strange, decorated with carvings of suns and moons locked in an eternal dance. Kenjiro, his curiosity piqued, ran a hand over some strange scribbles on the wall.
"I-I can translate that for y-you, Bombom, if y-you want..." Lyrielle offered, her cheeks flushing.
"Really? Yeah, tell us," Kenjiro smiled.
Her face went an even deeper shade of red as she leaned closer to the wall. "It's... a story," she said shyly. "About a boy born of the sun and the moon. His... his parents struck a war with the sun and moon gods, wiping out their clans. In the end, it says the boy is still alive, but cursed to change... by day and by night."
As soon as she finished speaking, a woman's laugh echoed, clear as a bell, directly in Kenjiro's ear. An image flashed in his mind: a breathtakingly beautiful woman with deep blue hair, holding a luminous moon in her hands. The vision vanished as quickly as it came.
"Did you guys see her?" he asked, his heart pounding. The rest of the party just looked at him, confused, shaking their heads. He gulped, an uneasy feeling settling in his stomach as they pushed open the heavy church doors.
Inside, they found a secret passage behind a bookshelf. "Classic," Kenjiro sighed, livestream drone already active. "The old book-on-the-shelf trick." They followed the passage down a long, seemingly endless hall until they heard voices.
They emerged onto a balcony overlooking a vast, hidden auditorium. Below, a man in ornate black robes stood on a stage, giving a speech to dozens of followers, all wearing black robes with a silver moon emblem.
"We shall make a grand entrance for our leader!" the man on stage boomed. "He will bring the true darkness to this world!"
The robed figures cheered wildly.
"A new age of darkness will come, and we, the Children of the Eclipse, will reign with him!"
Kenjiro, broadcasting the whole thing, sighed into his drone's microphone. "Oh, so cliché. The dark lord and blah, blah, blah..."
Suddenly, a donation alert blared from his LilyPad at maximum volume. A synthesized voice screamed: "HEY BOMBOM, DON'T LET THE STUPID GROUP FIND YOU!"
Kenjiro had forgotten to turn off the audio alerts. Every head in the auditorium snapped in their direction.
"GET THEM!" the leader commanded.
"Behind me!" Gluteus roared, slamming his shield into the ground and taunting the cultists. A wave of fireballs erupted from the crowd, all focusing on the giant tank. DragonSlayer vanished into the shadows to flank them, Lyrielle's healing light enveloped Gluteus, and Kaito used his speed to harass the casters, preventing them from focusing on the healer.
And Kenjiro? He was streaming. But not for long. He saw the leader focusing on some kind of powerful spell and rushed him, the bunny suit activating.
Ability Activated: +25 Speed, -25 Strength, +25 Charisma, +10 Luck
He was a blur, too fast for the leader to track. He kicked and punched, not doing much damage, but constantly interrupting the man's spellcasting. His flurry of attacks eventually sent the leader tumbling to the ground.
"Who are you?!" the leader gasped, looking up.
Kenjiro stood over him, crossing his arms. "I'm Bombom," he declared, striking a pose for the camera. "Remember my name."
The leader's face, which was looking directly up past Kenjiro's legs, suddenly flushed. A trickle of blood ran from his nose. He raised his hands. "I... I surrender."
With their leader defeated, Gluteus and DragonSlayer made short work of the remaining cultists. They tied them up and Kenjiro went to interrogate the leader. He bent down, his face inches from the man's. "Who are you? And what are you doing here?"
From behind him, Kenjiro could see DragonSlayer69 blush.
