Chapter 38: The Date
The lingering, phantom laughter of the demon had faded, leaving an awkward silence in the bell tower. The quest was over. The Sunstone was secured. Now, it was time for Kenjiro to uphold his end of a very different, far more embarrassing bargain.
With Seraphina watching him with an unnerving intensity, he pulled out his LilyPad. He found the business card the man had given him what felt like a lifetime ago and dialed the number.
"Hello?" a smooth, confident voice answered.
"H-hey," Kenjiro began, his own voice cracking slightly. He cleared his throat. "It's, uh, Bombom. From the other day. You gave me a ride?"
"Bombom! I was hoping you'd call!" the man said, his voice instantly full of enthusiasm. "I've been following your streams. That cosplay was incredible."
"Yeah, whatever," Kenjiro grumbled. "Listen, I was thinking... maybe I was too hasty. I'm free tonight. If you still want to... you know."
"Absolutely! Name the place, I'll be there."
"The Femboy Adventuring Guild dining hall. Tonight," Kenjiro said, then quickly hung up before he could lose his nerve. He looked at Seraphina, who just gave a curt, sharp nod.
"The date will be tonight, there," Kenjiro explained unnecessarily. "So we better get moving. And then, after some time, you arrive."
She nodded again. "Understood." She let them gather the loot from the fallen demons and mages before they all began the long journey back.
They arrived at the guild in the evening. Kenjiro immediately went to his room to shower and change. He needed the right outfit. Something that said "I'm on a date," but also "I'm still better than you." He settled on a simple, elegant black dress that was far more tasteful than his battle attire. He couldn't resist snapping a quick picture in the mirror, uploading it to LilyPad with a single, provocative caption: Date tonight.
The comments were immediate and possessive.
WHAT? HOW ABOUT ME?
Bombom betrayed us!
You were supposed to be mine forever! I'm unsubscribing!
"People here are so possessive," Kenjiro muttered, weirded out.
When the time came, he walked down the grand staircase of the guild hall. His red eyes immediately met Ryo's, who was leaning against the banister with a smirk.
"Someone's having a date tonight, huh?" Ryo teased. "Lucky guy."
"S-shut up!" Kenjiro blushed. "I'm doing it for a favor!"
He stalked off to the guild's dining area, a fancy, restaurant-style space, and took a seat. A few minutes later, the man arrived. He gave his name—Valerius—to the bodyguard at the door and was shown to Kenjiro's table.
"Oh, Bombom," Valerius sighed, his eyes full of adoration. "You are looking beautiful tonight."
Kenjiro just smiled and nodded, his eyes darting to a shadowy corner of the room where he could just make out Seraphina's silhouette. That son of a— he could almost hear her thinking.
They made small talk for a while, then Valerius leaned in, his expression serious. "Bombom, I'm really in love with you. As soon as I saw your first post on LilyPad, I knew."
Kenjiro's blush was genuine this time. "T-thanks. Are you... single?"
Valerius looked around conspiratorially. "I was married," he whispered. "But I got tired of that life. She was... you know, controlling. So I said I had a job opportunity, faked my disappearance, and got rich by selling some cryptographed monkey photos."
What a jerk, Kenjiro thought.
Just then, a figure stormed out of the shadows. It was Seraphina, her face a mask of blind rage. She slapped Valerius so hard the sound echoed through the dining hall.
"So, you're here," she seethed, "flirting with some man in a skirt!"
Valerius went pale, scrambling in his seat. "Oh, hey, honey... uh... uh... Bombom here is my work buddy! Ain't that right?" He looked at Kenjiro with wide, pleading eyes, winking desperately.
This was the moment. A devious, wicked smirk spread across Kenjiro's face.
"Yes," he purred, leaning forward. "And we had fun everywhere in the office. So you better punish him."
Valerius looked at Bombom, horrified. "H-he's joking, dear! He's joking!"
But Seraphina had heard enough. She didn't even smile at bombom joke just grabbed her husband by the ear and dragged him toward the entrance, scolding him in a low, furious tone. As they reached the door, she ripped the ring from her finger and threw it at his face.
Kenjiro watched the whole scene unfold, a deep sense of satisfaction washing over him. He calmly sat back in his chair, took a sip of water, and waited for his new party member to return.
