Chapter 141: On A Timer
Ezran, standing a few feet behind them, muttered nervously as he conjured a fireball in his shaking hands. "This isn't fun. This is terrifying."
The fireball soared, smashing into a cluster of undead and scattering their bones. Ezran sighed in relief but froze as three more skeletons emerged from the shadows with glinting swords.
"Uh, a little help here?" he squeaked, retreating hastily.
Lilo spun, releasing an arrow that flew into one of the skeletons, shattering its skull. "Ezran, you're a mage! Start acting like one and less like a scared puppy!"
"I'm trying! Do you know how hard it is to focus when everything's trying to kill you?"
The undead pressed closer, seemingly endless in droves. Just as it seemed they were about to be overwhelmed, a deafening explosion of light and heat erupted from the east. A massive wave of fire swept across the battlefield, disintegrating dozens of undead in an instant.
When the flames cleared, a tall figure stepped forward. His flowing red robes were adorned with intricate golden embroidery, and a glowing staff crackled with fiery energy in his hand. His stern face bore the depth of countless battles, and his eyes burned with an intensity that commanded immediate respect.
It was Dorian Emberfall, a level 75 mage from Tagharium, and one of the kingdom's most powerful spellcasters. His mere presence seemed to momentarily halt the chaos as the undead recoiled from his aura.
"Knights! Players! To me!" Dorian's voice boomed across the battlefield, infused with mana that made it resonate like thunder. "Hold your ground! We will not let this sorcerer win!"
As the remaining knights and players regrouped, Dorian raised his staff high as its tip glowed with a blinding light.
"I will cast a spell to unveil the ruined castle's location," he declared with a loud voice. "It will take ten minutes to complete. Protect me at all costs. Should this spell be interrupted, it will fail. The longer we take trying to find the castle, the more the monolith feeds."
A flurry of notifications appeared before the players.

The players barely had time to react before Dorian planted his staff into the ground. A golden circle of glowing runes expanded around him, and he began chanting in a deep, resonant tone.
The runes spiraled upward, forming a protective dome, but it was clear it wouldn't hold indefinitely.
The undead surged forward again, as though sensing the threat to their master's plans. The knights formed a defensive line around Dorian, locking their shields in place as shadowy beings and skeletal warriors crashed against them.
"Ten minutes?!" Lilo shouted before loosing an arrow that pierced the eye socket of an advancing skeleton. "That's practically an eternity in gamer time!"
Boris roared as he slammed his axe into a hulking abomination. His muscles strained against its sheer mass. "Quit whining, Lilo! Just keep shooting!"
Ezran was sweating bullets as he conjured a frost nova, freezing a group of undead in their tracks. "How is he supposed to cast anything in this chaos?"
"You'd be surprised what people can do under pressure!" Lilo retorted, firing two arrows in quick succession.
The battlefield was filled with the sound of screams, clashing steel, and spellfire. Players and NPC knights worked together in an unspoken rhythm.
Lilo darted across the battlefield with an agility that allowed her to take out enemies from vantage points. Boris carved a path through the undead with sheer brute force, while Ezran alternated between fire and ice to control the hordes.

...
The world shimmered as August was transported to the third and final stage of the tier 2 test. The air felt different—thicker, heavier, and charged with an unspoken pressure.
When his vision cleared, he found himself standing in a dark, hall lit by flickering torches mounted on intricately carved stone walls.
The atmosphere screamed secrecy and danger. Around him were other cloaked figures, all moving with their presence hidden. This was an assassin's world, and he was right in the middle of it.
A voice called out to him from the shadows, deep and commanding. "Aleman, step forward."
<[ You Are Now A Member Of The Oak Blood Assassin Organisation ]>
<[ Your Master Is The Leader Of This Famed Organisation ]>
August immediately understood what was going on.
The voice that called out to him happened to be the leader of this assassin organization in this world. A tall and slender figure stepped into the light with his face obscured by a hood, but the gleaming eyes beneath it held a sharpness that could cut through steel.
"You have been assigned a mission, one that will test every skill you possess," the leader said, handing him a scroll sealed with a crimson emblem. "The target is a merchant named Lucar Drell. He's become too troublesome and has information that could threaten our operations. Eliminate him."
August nodded, taking the scroll and breaking the seal. Inside were detailed instructions: Lucar was heavily guarded and constantly moving between his warehouses in a nearby city. The location of his next stop was marked, but there was no time to waste.
As August turned to leave, the leader's voice stopped him. "One more thing, Aleman. Lucar is no fool. He's hired an assassin from the Crimson Fang to take me out in retaliation. That assassin will move swiftly, but you must be swifter. Kill Lucar before the Crimson Fang assassin reaches me. Fail, and you know the consequences."
August nodded again with a look of calmness. "I won't fail."

The mission was simple on paper but layered with complexity. August exited the hall swiftly.
Outside, the world was a dimly lit city with narrow streets and towering buildings. Every shadow seemed alive, and every corner held a potential threat. He moved swiftly, blending into the darkness as he headed toward Lucar's marked location.
