Chapter 3: Supporting the Family
With all these limitations, it's safe to say that life in their village, and in many other parts of the country, wasn't easy.
Especially considering the conditions in the 1950s, where industry seemed to be still in its infancy and would take decades to develop further.
Jay realized he could only progress slowly, but then considering the system he had in place, optimism returned to him.
(A hungry growl from Jay's stomach was heard) Nining looked at Jay, "Brother, are you hungry?" Nining asked with concern.
"Um, brother very hungry. Did Mom leave Brother anything to eat?" Jay asked again.
"It seems Mom left some food in the kitchen," Nining told Jay, trying to remember with a playful expression.
"Then let's see what Mom left for Brother," Jay replied, carrying Nining toward the kitchen.
Seeing the simple kitchen, with its earthen stove and firewood visible, Jay was once again reminded of the very simple atmosphere of his hometown.
When he visited his grandparents on Earth, besides a clay stove with two fire pits, there was a pot and a frying pan, which looked quite worn. Despite this, these were the most valuable items in the kitchen, aside from some grains and stored food.
This was due to the fact that obtaining iron products was not easy for villagers like them. Besides requiring a significant amount of points to exchange for kitchen supplies tickets, they also had to purchase these kitchen utensils from a specialty store located in the sub-district, dozens of kilometers from their village.
Looking at the empty pot, Jay shook his head, realizing his luck was bad. After searching for a while, he couldn't find anything his mother had cooked.
"It looks like there's nothing left of Mom's cooking. How about we roast some sweet potatoes or potatoes?" Finding nothing edible, Jay decided to make his own food.
Fortunately, in the kitchen's food storage, there were two sacks of food containing sweet potatoes and potatoes, but they weren't much left over, only about a dozen kilograms remaining.
Taking some sweet potatoes and potatoes, Jay soon invited Nining to make baked sweet potatoes and potatoes for breakfast.
Grabbing some twigs to light the stove, Jay added a few larger pieces of wood.
Waiting for the wood to burn completely, Jay then added the potatoes and sweet potatoes he had previously taken.
To be roasted under the ashes from the firewood.
While waiting for the sweet potatoes and potatoes to cook, Jay, who had been holding back his hunger, drank several cups of boiled water from the available pot.
"Big brother, can Nining eat the potatoes you baked?" With an innocent and eager expression, Nining asked Jay.
"Of course, Nining can eat the potatoes," Jay lovingly stroked Nining's hair and answered her question.
"Good... Nining really likes potatoes, but unfortunately, Mom doesn't let Nining eat a lot of them," Nining replied complainingly, as if she wanted to complain about her mother's behavior towards her.
Hearing Nining's answer, Jay briefly remembered that his family didn't do this because they didn't love her, but because they simply didn't have much food.
It was only enough to feed the family for a few weeks, and the next harvest season was only one to two months away.
He explained that his mother wanted to conserve the food she had, and that it was also to help her recover. Jay also realized that his family had likely already spent a lot of money.
This made their already poor economic situation even more difficult. As for whether they could borrow food from other family members, Jay knew it was certainly possible.
But the reality was that everything was limited, whether it was food or other things, so people naturally tended to be frugal and less wasteful.
Don't forget, people nowadays basically have a more honorable attitude, where they would rather endure hunger than have to eat.
Asking for help.
Unless forced, they would rather not ask for help. As long as they can still work and find their own food, people will naturally strive.
Moreover, they have abundant natural resources. If they are not lazy and willing to take risks, there will always be something they can reap from Nature.
Reflecting on this, Jay had to say that although the current era is full of shortcomings, human nature seems to be much more resilient and better than in the modern era that followed.
Because everything is so easy, it essentially makes people less appreciative and wasteful.
While chatting with Nining, half an hour passed, and Jay quickly picked up some cooked sweet potatoes and potatoes.
Removing them from the pile of firewood ash, the potatoes and sweet potatoes, which looked ripe, now emitted an enticing aroma.
Staring at the ripe potatoes and sweet potatoes, Nining, impatient, immediately took one, but because it was still very hot, she cried out in pain.
"Ahhhh...hot...hot..." Nining threw the potato she was trying to pick up.
"Look, don't be impatient, let it cool down a bit and then you can eat it," Jay helplessly tried to comfort her.
Jay knew that Nining's actions were spontaneous, as she was impatient to eat the potato.
This also indicated that Nining wasn't very full from the breakfast her mother prepared, so after a while, she let the potato cool.
Jay then began peeling the potato and cutting it into pieces to quickly dissipate the heat.
After that, Nining, impatient, picked up one of the potato pieces and, with a blissful expression, began to chew it...
"Ahhhh...delicious...delicious...but hot...ha...ha..." Seeing Nining's cute behavior, Jay felt both amused and sad.
Soon, the two siblings began to finish the potatoes and sweet potatoes they had baked, until finally, they were gone.
Nining, feeling full, patted her slightly bulging belly. Meanwhile, Jay's hunger had disappeared.
However, he didn't feel completely full, as eating just a few sweet potatoes clearly couldn't satisfy his current physical needs.
(It seems I need to add some protein. Relying solely on potatoes and sweet potatoes would be torturous.)
Finally, Jay decided to try to find additional protein for himself and his family, because only by maintaining a healthy body could they live better.
He was currently considering several ways to find protein sources, and the easiest was to eat meat.
"Where can I get free meat? Should I hunt? But it seems hunting is also fraught with risks." He hesitated, unsure of what to do.
Nining, listening to her brother talk, subconsciously asked.
"Brother... Can we eat fish?" Nining asked.
As if awakened by Nining's words, Jay happily exclaimed, "Yes...fish is also a good source of protein, why am I being so stupid!!!!" Jay exclaimed excitedly.
"We'll try to catch some fish today. Now, would you like to accompany me fishing in the river behind the village?" Jay asked Nining.
"Fishing...okay...okay...Nining wants to go fishing with me," Nining replied happily.
