Chapter 606: They All Have Weaknesses
"But, Ferocious Beasts with such massive builds would certainly take up quite a bit of space when they die at the entrance to the Tribe…" Yan Jiao observed.
Witnessing two enormous Ferocious Beasts sprawled lifeless at the gate, he recognised the pressing need for immediate clearance. The battlefield's aftermath demanded swift resolution.
"We just need to burn them all with fire. That's the most efficient approach. These two Ferocious Beasts appear so peculiar that their meat is better left unconsumed." Cang Shi declared with evident distaste.
This marked his first encounter with such bizarre-looking Ferocious Beasts. For safety's sake, avoiding consumption of these creatures seemed the wisest course of action. Who could predict what consequences might arise from eating such Ferocious Beasts? They resembled a grotesque patchwork of creatures, all forcibly combined. No one could have anticipated what complications might emerge if they consumed them.
"We'll proceed as you have suggested then. Burn down the carcasses." Yan Jiao nodded in agreement. His gaze remained fixed on the distant terrain as he issued orders. "Allow the firearm squad to rest while they report back to the Shaman."
He intended to remain stationed here, monitoring the situation to prevent his people from losing their anchor should circumstances unexpectedly change, and more Ferocious Beasts show up.
"Understood." Cang Shi acknowledged with a nod.
*Step step step…*
Following their orders, Yan Hua's squad moved towards the Yong'an Building. With no Ferocious Beasts nearby, the firearm squad could temporarily rest.
"Shaman, we've back!" Yan Hua announced, taking off the firearm strapped to her back. The sensation of returning to Yong'an Building immediately brought her comfort.
"The lighting here is still so much better than outside." Sha Lan observed, noting the dramatic contrast in illumination.
The Yong'an Building's interior blazed with significantly more light than the exterior, due to the numerous fruit oil lamps positioned throughout the building.
"Have some water and rest. There's certainly more to do later." Su Bai spoke gently.
He had reconsidered his original intended timing to inspect the wooden wall's perimeter. Better to wait until the Warriors had successfully repelled several waves of Ferocious Beasts before venturing out.
Once the Warriors had built confidence through their initial victories, his presence at the front would cause less concern.
"Shaman, those two Ferocious Beasts we eliminated were very strange and ugly." Yan Hua reported.
Yan Hua recalled the recent Ferocious Beasts with curiosity, wondering what they were called. These two were so bizarre that even her Father could not identify them.
"Yeah, those two Ferocious Beasts appeared as though multiple beasts had been combined together. The overall appearance was quite unsettling…" Sha Lan added.
"Seems to be made of multiple beasts? To think such Ferocious Beasts actually exist, and even the Chieftain and the others couldn't identify them?" Su Bai said.
"Father couldn't identify them. We even requested Uncle Gu Mu's assistance, but he was also not familiar with them, stating he had never encountered Ferocious Beasts like them before." Yan Hua responded with a shake of her head.
Yan Jiao's reasoning had been that since everyone remained uncertain, perhaps the Tribe's Elders might possess knowledge. Thus, he consulted them.
"Ferocious Beasts unknown even to them… Could they be recently created? Or perhaps they existed before but just never approached our Tribe?" Su Bai speculated.
His thoughts turned to whether these might be newly emerged threats, particularly given the recent appearance of another unidentifiable Ferocious Beast during the snow season that had similarly overturned all their previous understanding.
"I believe they must be new. Considering their strange appearances, clearly made of multiple beasts combined, there is no way no one would forget about them." Yan Hua theorised.
"Exactly. If they existed previously without approaching our Tribe, why would this year be different?" Sha Lan astutely added.
Sha Lan had immediately identified the crucial point: if these Ferocious Beasts had existed before, their absence from Flame Dragon Tribe until now would need an explanation.
Moreover, they would have heard from other Tribes about this as well. After all, such Ferocious Beasts were a significant sighting. Despite slow information propagation in this era, such interesting news usually reached different Tribes through the Market or when they trade.
The complete absence of information regarding such creatures strongly suggested that they had never appeared before.
"You're right, These Ferocious Beasts are undoubtedly new." Su Bai concurred, continuing, "But how could such bizarre creatures exist? Combining various beasts… this defies all understanding."
This marked his first encounter with reports of such beings. Searching through his inherited memories revealed no records of similar creatures.
Su Bai had an extensive recollection of Ferocious Beasts, which was primarily derived from what the Old Shaman had left behind. However, these Chimera Ferocious Beasts were an exception. There was no documentation in existence that recorded them.
"I suspect they're connected to that Bird-like Ferocious Beast during the snow season. Too many strange things have occurred around the Tribe recently." Yan Hua speculated.
"Unfortunately, we still don't know where they come from." Sha Lan frowned with concern.
Such uncertainty was unnerving. The unknown often proved most terrifying precisely because no one understood them and how to properly respond to them.
"Perhaps understanding will come in time. There's no need for fear. Despite our ignorance regarding their names or origins, we possess methods for dealing with them." Su Bai reassured after taking a drink.
"While the unknown certainly inspires dread, helplessness against such threats is worse. We've already demonstrated our capability to deal with such problems, haven't we?" He maintained a high level of optimism given their proven effectiveness in dealing with such threats. True terror would emerge only if they lacked the means to combat these threats.
"Shaman is right. We eliminated those two quite fast." Yan Hua reflected.
They had eliminated the threat before they could really threaten the Tribe. This was a great feat on its own. Furthermore, they had done this without excessive manpower or resource depletion. The only significant loss were those explosive packages, which would require the Warriors to reset their placements.
Since no one could predict when the next wave was coming, rapid replacement of the explosive packages was essential.
"But those explosive packages were ineffective against that Tortoise-like Ferocious Beast. What if a Ferocious Beast that is immune to explosive packages, poison, and firearms come up?" Sha Lan worried.
Her concerns were centred on the scenario where Flame Dragon Tribe's primary defensive assets prove completely ineffective against a Ferocious Beast. Since these new Ferocious Beasts were already so strange, what if an even stranger and stronger one appears?
Given the current trend, encountering a Ferocious Beast immune to all available weapons would not seem too surprising. After all, strange occurrences had become increasingly commonplace.
"I share your concern but I think that is still unlikely to happen. Every animal, even Ferocious Beast, will have a weakness or two. Identifying these vulnerabilities is the true key to taking them down." Su Bai offered comfort.
"I understand." Both young women nodded along at those words.
