Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Finally Ms. Robin Streams
By the third day of the zombie virus outbreak, Special Infected had begun to appear among the zombies.
Those with the potential to evolve could become Evolvers, immune to the virus and gaining superhuman abilities. Those without the potential succumbed to the virus and became zombies. The Special Infected were individuals with marginal potential; upon infection, they mutated into stronger, more dangerous zombie variants.
The most common Special Infected included the massive, muscle-bound "Tank" and the slender, agile "Hunter." However, even these enhanced zombies stood no chance against military firepower.
The towering, three-to-four-meter-tall Tanks were easily obliterated by a single tank shell. Once lured out, they were sitting ducks. The only difference was that the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations' task of sweeping battlefields and hunting down straggling zombies had become slightly more dangerous.
Fortunately, with the immensely experienced Zhong Wanhong leading the charge, these Special Infected posed no significant threat.
By the fourth day, the military and the Bureau had cleared one of Fancheng's five designated quarantine zones, leaving four remaining.
On the sixth day, a team from the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations discovered an Alpha Infected in a building. These were the most powerful type of Special Infected, resembling ordinary human women with the intelligence of seven or eight-year-old children. In addition to their extraordinary physical strength, they possessed Super Abilities like "Flesh Regeneration" and "Telekinesis."
Alpha Infected could command and control Zombie Hordes, so they were typically surrounded by large numbers of other Special Infected.
The entire building had been transformed into a veritable fortress. After careful consideration, the Bureau decided against a direct assault. Instead, they ensured no civilians were nearby and then leveled the structure with a missile strike.
With the Alpha Infected eliminated, the zombies in the second quarantine zone were quickly wiped out.
While the Bureau team fought tirelessly, Robin remained holed up at home, never venturing outside. She had even called Zhong Wanhong to offer her assistance, but he declined.
For Robin, life continued much as before. She spent her mornings scrolling through her phone and her afternoons singing on her live stream. The only real change was her near-exclusive diet of instant noodles, which she was starting to find utterly repulsive.
Fortunately, on the fourth day, the Longcheng police began distributing food packages to each household, containing meat and vegetables. However, Robin soon realized she didn't know how to cook.
Well, guess I'll have to learn, she thought. Can't just starve to death, can I?
On the afternoon of the seventh day since the zombie virus outbreak, Robin started her live stream on time. Remarkably, her Kuaishou fan count had skyrocketed to a staggering nine million in just one week. Although she hadn't been streaming on Douyin or YouTube, her fan bases on both platforms had already surpassed ten million.
Her progress toward the System's "Songstress" objective had reached fifteen percent.
From the perspective of an ordinary person or a typical singer, Robin had achieved phenomenal success. Few in the world had accomplished as much, especially considering she had done so in less than a month.
Now, a single advertisement could earn her more wealth than an average person accumulates in a lifetime, leaving Robin herself feeling like she was living in a dream.
Robin glanced to the right of her computer screen, where the bullet comments in her live stream were scrolling. Even though she had just started broadcasting, countless messages flooded the screen at blinding speed, making it impossible to read a single one.
Unlike her usual streams, where she would immediately start learning and singing songs live, she began this session with casual chatter.
To be honest, this near-monologue had initially felt incredibly awkward. It was like talking to a mirror for hours on end—a daunting prospect.
But as they say, practice makes perfect. Robin took a sip of water and began updating her viewers on the situation in Longcheng.
This was another task Zhong Wanhong had assigned her after her request for direct assistance was rejected: to "report the battle status" to her live stream audience.
With Longcheng under lockdown, everyone was confined to their homes, naturally turning to the internet for entertainment. The loudspeaker incident on the first day had made Robin's existence as "Robin" known throughout the city, and ordinary citizens had been tuning into her daily live streams like clockwork ever since.
It's no exaggeration to say that a significant portion of Robin's new fans that week were local residents of Longcheng.
Her primary mission was to reassure these viewers by sharing daily updates on the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations and the military's progress in eliminating zombies and securing areas.
Suddenly, a paid super chat message floated across Robin's screen: [ How does the streamer get access to this internal information? Is it really accurate? ]
For what must have been the hundredth time, Robin explained, "I'm a member of the Longcheng Bureau of Anomalous Investigations. Of course I know what's happening on the front lines."
[Wait, if the streamer is really an Evolver from the Bureau, why aren't you out there killing zombies instead of streaming?]
[What's your super ability, streamer? Can you demonstrate it?]
[I'm Qin Shi Huang, I swear! Streamer, send me 50 yuan. When I resurrect, I'll make you a marquis!]
Robin had no intention of addressing these bullet comments. Instead, she held up her Bureau ID card to the camera, making it clearly visible, and continued calmly relaying the intelligence Zhong Wanhong had sent her.
This was a skill Robin had honed over time—a fundamental ability for any streamer: discerning which bullet comments warranted a response and which were best ignored. Endless explanations would only lead to a never-ending stream of replies, and she couldn't let the chat dictate the flow of her stream. She needed to maintain control of the conversation.
After summarizing the battle situation, Robin sang a relatively soothing and heartwarming song. Then she moved on to her usual livestream routine: learning songs on the fly.
This time, however, Robin had chosen an English song. While she didn't speak the language, she could usually manage to imitate a song after listening to it a few times.
Unlike before, Robin didn't completely immerse herself in learning the song. She occasionally exchanged a few words with the bullet comments, engaging with her audience even while practicing.
Time flew by, and before she knew it, the entire afternoon had vanished.
