Chapter 94: Wisdom Magic [Information Mimicry]
"I probably understood less than half of it."
To be honest, Jiang Cha was just bragging.
The knowledge possessed by the Greatest Sage was vast, and her exploration of the School of the Undead had already reached a level that other witches could not comprehend at all.
But Jiang Cha did understand a little of this particular interpretation of the School of Necromancy—
Belief.
This belief did not refer to the faith of witches. As a race that had completely broken the boundary between life and death and nearly unified the underworld and hell, witches were completely incapable of fearing death.
Let alone worshipping it.
Yet the belief in death itself had countless followers across the multiverse. In many worlds, the god of death was even second only to the Creator.
No matter what form it took, once the base number of believers reached an incalculable level, it became an enormous resource.
Not to mention that belief itself could create gods.
No one could say for certain whether faith appeared first and birthed the gods of faith, or whether some genius discovered a way to become a god by harnessing the belief of intelligent life.
At the very least, the Lord of Death was a real concept.
But only a concept.
According to the theory of the Great Sage Jane Pearl, the current Lord of Death was nothing more than a chaotic, will-less existence that followed only the instinct of death.
Similar to the “creating gods” practice of mystical magic, the spells of the Mystical School required the caster to first construct a “temporary god” and then use mana, in place of faith, to pray for “divine power” to manifest magic.
That was why the Mystical School was the most versatile of the six major schools.
The casting process for necromantic spells such as Bone Shield, Bone Spear, and even Bone Hell followed ⊛ Nоvеlιght ⊛ (Read the full story) the same principle.
The only difference was that, because the Lord of Death truly existed, the necromancers did not need to construct a temporary god when casting [Bone Series Magic], thereby omitting one crucial step.
This was why Jiang Cha felt the inscription structures of these spells were strange.
Because the most essential link was missing—yet that missing link was independent of the magic circle’s analysis.
It was not unusual for omniscient and omnipotent beings to create matter. Even the Great Sage of Transmutation had means to create matter using transmutation magic. Though not comparable to the Great Sage of Creation, she could still unleash several forbidden spells.
The Lord of Death, being a will-less entity that followed only instinct, could be described in mechanical terms as a server of divine power. Mana just happened to be an extremely high-level offering. Thus, it was not surprising that the School of the Undead possessed magic capable of conjuring matter from nothing.
But was this theory of any use to Jiang Cha today?
Absolutely not.
Yet learning—whether of technology or magic—was a process of gradual accumulation. Knowledge that seemed useless now might one day play a pivotal role.
Of course, it might also prove completely irrelevant and end up sealed away in the attic of memory.
But so what?
Satisfying curiosity itself was a joy to intelligent life. At the very least, Jiang Cha did not walk away empty-handed.
"The Great Sage’s knowledge is far too advanced for me. The only thing I truly gained this time is that the quality of my mana has improved a little… and I mastered a high-level necromancy spell. I suppose that’s enough to count as not failing the commission?"
“Violet will be very happy to hear that.”
Mephisto took a sip of tea, concealing her urge to punch the Witch of Versailles. Still smiling elegantly, she invited gently:
“Would you like to meet her together? Violet really missed you. After sensing your aura yesterday, she kept asking to go play with you.”
"Okay."
Not only was playing with Violet part of Jiang Cha’s commission, but after receiving knowledge from that wealthy little loli, she could hardly refuse an invitation.
Most importantly—she really couldn’t continue studying right now.
This wave of mental overload couldn’t be cured by any medicine. A day of rest was the only remedy.
So why not spend it with her client? Jiang Cha still had a fondness for the lovely Violet.
"Jiang Cha!!"
Mephisto hadn’t lied. The little girl’s enthusiasm alone showed how much she liked Jiang Cha.
Perhaps it was because of her beauty. Or perhaps because she was the only witch at the academy willing to play “Undead House” with her.
But whatever the reason, the innocent affection of children could not be faked.
"Is Jiang Cha also an undead witch?"
The girl reached out and hugged her. With her petite frame, it looked awkward for her to hold Violet, who was nearly a meter tall.
But Violet didn’t notice at all. She only blinked her big black eyes and looked up curiously.
"Why do you think so? I’m not a witch of the dead."
"But Mom said that apart from the Undead Witch, no one else could master high-level necromancy so quickly… But the scent isn’t right!"
The little girl sniffed deeply. No one knew how she judged it, but she still realized Jiang Cha wasn’t the Undead Witch.
"But I like Jiang Cha’s scent! It’s very similar to Mom’s!"
Jiang Cha: "…."
I’d really prefer not to be too similar to the most ancient sage, thank you very much.
Still, she could guess what Violet meant by “similar.”
It must have been because of the lingering death energy.
After yesterday’s accident, Jiang Cha still carried a large amount of death magic in her body that she hadn’t yet converted back.
“Violet, do you like it? If you do, I can keep it like this forever, okay?”
Jiang Cha extended her index finger, gently scratching the little girl’s upturned nose with a soft smile.
"No."
Before Violet could answer, Mephisto cut in.
“Except for the Witch of the Dead, no one can sustain a large quantity of death magic within their body for long… You know, death is equal to all living things.”
Although she was not formally trained in the School of the Undead, Mephisto, who had raised Violet since childhood, clearly possessed extraordinary understanding of it and directly pointed out the danger.
"No…?"
The little girl’s joy instantly turned to disappointment.
Her expressions changed like a gif animation—the dashed expectations written all over her face.
"Is it possible?"
But Jiang Cha’s reply was unexpected.
As she spoke, a mysterious blue light flickered across her body.
Her inherent magic [Information Collection] activated.
Wisdom Magic [Thought Overlap] surged to life.
Her mind entered an overclocked state, reaching the very limit of what she could handle. Five hundred thought circuits ran simultaneously, rapidly analyzing her existing knowledge.
The advanced theories of necromancy she had just absorbed.
The knowledge of magical development she had accumulated.
In just five seconds, she developed a brand new low-level spell.
——Wisdom Magic [Information Mimicry].
"Wow! It feels exactly the same as mine! Jiang Cha, you’re amazing!!!"
The little girl’s happiness bloomed once more.
"I think I might have… accidentally brought home a monster?"
Mephisto couldn’t help but complain inwardly.
Please forgive her—even as an elegant noble witch, she could not think of any more suitable word than monster to describe such a prodigy.
