Chapter 41 - Even in This World, Police Chase Criminals(9)
I’m fucked. I didn’t think it through carefully, but anyone looking at the current situation would think I’m fucked, and I also think I’m properly fucked right now.
Superpower users surrounding me from all directions. They had quite varied appearances, but their common point was that their eyes were glazed over, and they seemed to have no hesitation in killing me, the intruder.
I want to turn around and run away right now, but it doesn’t seem easy to escape through where we came in because Sai’s car completely collapsed the research lab building entrance when it broke through.
To sum it up, the only choice left for me now is one. Like the radio transmission I blurted out without thinking properly, it’s to herd those damn bastards like sheep and escape from this building.
Buying time until New Hope arrives is out of the question. They said there were over 20, but the number of superpower users visible as soon as we entered the building is at least around 30.
Thinking logically, there would be at least twice as many superpower users in the ‘real’ research lab where Minus bastard makes the drugs compared to those here.
“You crazy bastard. Did you really turn everyone in this building into superpower users?”
Few people in current society want to become superpower users. In current society, superpower users are treated as potential criminals, monsters.
Even if you gain strong powers, who would want to become one if it means not being treated as human by people?
They say even ordinary people, if they become superpower users, can get fired from jobs they’ve been going to well, or even get kicked out of their homes. Even gangsters in back alleys are reluctant to become superpower users.
What will happen to those here now? I don’t care what happens to the gangster bastards. But the security guards and researchers there, what on earth did they do wrong to be used like that?
“Son of a bitch.”
I’m not sure if I’m saying it to Sai or to Minus. But as if reacting to that mutter I made without realizing, one superpower user rushed at me.
A person with extended joints in their legs came running at high speed first and pushed me. I flew helplessly and crashed into the wall.
It’s not at the level of smashing through a concrete wall, but the impact from the high speed was enough to momentarily take my breath away.
Fuck. There’s no time to worry about other people. I’ll die at this rate. I painfully steadied my body and shot my gun at the superpower user rushing at me.
But the rushing superpower user easily avoided the fired bullet. Another person rushed at me from the side. Damn it. Are you trying to kill me without even giving me time to think?!
Gritting my teeth in the face of mortal danger, I twisted my body, and the thorns that grew from the rushing man’s arm stuck into where my head had been.
Piercing through the concrete wall like piercing through tofu. Is it lucky that I avoided this? No, that’s not it. Normally, I would have died on the spot from attacks by multiple superpower users at once.
But because they bumped into and tangled with each other while attacking me, many gaps were created allowing me to avoid the attacks.
After kicking the stomach of the superpower user making thorns with all my strength, I ran backwards. There was no time to worry about Sai. Looking at the remaining superpower users rushing in to kill me, there was no time to worry about others.
“Urk… Gyaaaah!!!”
Like a tidal wave rushing in, the superpower users pushed each other aside and approached me. In the process, they use their abilities indiscriminately, causing the corridor to burn, crumble, and change like a sponge.
“This is crazy!”
If I get caught there, it won’t just end with dying, there won’t even be a corpse left. No, what kind of superpowers do they have for the interior to change like that?!
All 30 or so of them rush at me. They rush like children enchanted by the sound of the Pied Piper’s flute, but the shitty thing is that the rushing people aren’t children but superpower users who have lost their reason.
I’m scared. The sight of 30 superpower users rushing to kill me was a terrifying scene that made my breath stop and my head go blank for a moment.
What am I supposed to do alone with this… ?! New Hope hasn’t appeared yet, and there’s no trump card. Sai is already out of sight, what am I supposed to do?
While trembling in fear, as I rolled my body to avoid a huge blade flying at my legs, crash! Several SUVs entered the building, hitting the superpower users just like Sai had done.
I rejoiced at that sight. Reinforcements! Colleagues are rushing to save me!
“Stop! Police!”
“- Damn it! Buy us time! Find and arrest Minus! We can’t hold out long!”
…Huh? Why are those guys going inside without even looking at me?
I forgot to shout for help as I watched the detectives rush straight to the central research lab inside, ignoring me being chased by about 30 superpower users.
I certainly said over the radio that we should arrest Minus while buying time, but they’re leaving that bait to just one person?
Do those bastards perhaps see me as some kind of immortal? Or are they thinking of getting rid of me with this opportunity because they don’t like me?!
“Hey you-”
You bastards!
I couldn’t even spit out a cry filled with sorrow and resentment. There wasn’t even enough time to avoid the superpower users rushing in.
Various weapons shoot at my head, heart, no, my whole body. Even if I painfully avoid them again, the pursuit still doesn’t end.
I’m barely not dying because 30 or so people are tangled up and rushing in together, but that sight was like a scene you’d see in a zombie movie. Seeing it in reality rather than cheap CGI made me feel a fear I’d never felt before.
“You bastard. You really damn bitch!!”
It’s cursed! If I die here, I’ll become a ghost and curse that bitch! Throwing a person! In a place like this!! And running away alone!!
I tried to buy time by shooting backwards while running away, but one of those chasing me must have been annoyed by my resistance and crushed my right hand along with the gun with an invisible force.
“Ack…!”
The pain rushes through. I was shocked looking at my hand and gun in a miserable state as if ground in a blender. Crushing not just the flesh of my hand, but even the metal gun?!
Instinctively feeling the creepy sensation of the invisible force that crushed my gun approaching, I trusted my instincts and threw my body towards the stairs next to me.
At the same time, I saw the water purifier in front of me being crushed and the water inside bursting out! I was soaked with the water inside due to the sudden situation.
The water spraying in all directions naturally went into my mouth too- fuck it tastes bad! Minus bastard does a shitty job of maintaining the water purifier!
As I climbed the stairs while dry heaving, in a fleeting moment I saw what had done such a thing – a person with one eye like the Cyclops from mythology was flashing their eye.
Okay, so it’s that guy. I shouldn’t say this, but honestly he’s really ug- oh fuck here it comes!
Bang! The superpower users approach again, smashing the stairs I was on. It was a damn thing. Having to watch out for invisible forces while running away, I won’t be able to hold out.
Has it been 1 minute since I entered this place? I don’t know exactly how much time has passed, but one of my arms has already been completely smashed along with the gun, and my stamina is dropping too.
I might be able to hold out for a few more tens of seconds since I was able to escape to the 2nd floor by climbing the stairs, but it’s a matter of time. I’m going to die soon.
As the shadow of death looms closer every moment, strangely, Sai’s words before she rammed the car echo in my ears.
‘If you need my help, just tell me anytime. I’ll – always be ready to help you, Deputy Chief.’
I don’t know what Sai’s intentions were in giving Minus the superpower awakening drug.
But if there’s one thing for certain, it’s that that bitch was smiling. Not just smiling, but as if she couldn’t bear her excitement for what was about to happen.
Thinking back on that smile now, the meaning of that smile was probably foreseeing the current situation.
The meaning of Sai’s words was probably literal. In the face of mortal danger, is there anyone else I can rely on?
There isn’t. The hero New Hope is nowhere to be seen, and even if the police gather, it will only increase the number of people dying. If I don’t want to die here, there’s no way to survive except begging her to save me.
But why? Is she trying to check if I remember that night? Or is there another purpose? I can’t tell. I don’t know.
But that bitch will be watching me from somewhere in this building, and as she said, if I call for Sai, she will appear and save me.
I don’t know whether she’ll appear as Sai, my deputy from the Special Investigation Team, or as the criminal Sai, but still.
So – fuck, even if I die, I won’t call that bitch. At this point, even if my life is cut short, I don’t want to see things go as she wants!
“Da-”
While cursing my situation and wondering what to do, something fell from the ceiling along with a shaking shadow. Before I could recognize what had fallen, a saw-like blade pierced through my shoulder blade.
“Ugh, aaaargh!!”
Something making an animal-like cry stabbed my shoulder. Unable to even scream, I turned around and saw a familiar face.
Park Chin-woo, a gangster who held an executive position in the North Four, had his hands and arms completely transformed into saw blades.
A knife that looked man-made rather than a physical change due to superpower awakening was stuck in his right eye.
So, the right arm of such a chilling-looking bastard was currently piercing through my shoulder.
“You bas, tard…!”
“Kill, you. Detective, kill, all! Kill you!”
Muttering as if he had forgotten human language, even foaming at the mouth, that bastard pulled out his arm, and the saw-like arm ground away the bones and muscles of my shoulder, spraying blood.
Damn it. I thought I had gotten used to pain, but the pain of having my shoulder pierced by a saw blade and then pulled out was on a level I had never felt before.
I was already bleeding a lot because my hand was crushed, but it seems it’s reaching a level that’s hard to endure. My legs are losing strength. Park Chin-woo raises his other arm while shaking his body as if to finish me off.
I tried to exert strength to block it somehow, but this bastard doesn’t seem to be weak like Minus, ignoring my strength and about to swing his arm-
Bang! Bang! Bang!
“Fuck! You son of a bitch!”
Gunshots and bullets hitting Park Chin-woo’s body. Park Chin-woo spewed blood as if his killing intent until just now had been a lie, then collapsed face down in front of me without moving.
…What just happened? A superpower user collapsed after being shot? No, more importantly, did someone save me? Who on earth?
Filled with various questions, I pushed away Park Chin-woo’s body and looked towards where the gunshots came from, and there was-
“…Chief Kim?”
“Wow. You crazy bastard. You really charged in alone? You must really want to die.”
Why is Chief Kim here? Surprised, I looked at the chief closely, and he was in pretty bad shape too.
He was bleeding profusely from somewhere his head had been cracked, and the white of his right eye had turned red. He was dragging his leg as he came, looking like he had been through hell.
I couldn’t understand. Why is Chief Kim here? He did set out for the scene together, but the bald guy’s role was supposed to be coordinating the scene from outside and providing rear support.
Did this guy lose his mind along with his hair? Why on earth is he here?
“Fuck. Don’t look at me with those eyes. Because you went crazy and rammed in with a car, the command system and entire operation got smashed, so I don’t even know how I ended up here.”
…That wasn’t my fault. That crazy bitch Sai rammed in on her own. Fuck!
But there’s no time to explain that properly, and the whole building is shaking with explosions and gunshots continuing non-stop, reminiscent of a war zone.
Somehow I ended up being branded as the vanguard first and chased by superpower users, but seeing that there are no more pursuers, it seems they’re chasing other police officers who entered inside.
I don’t know if I should say I’m fortunate to be alive, or unfortunate thinking of the people dying at the hands of superpower users below.
But if we stay like this, it’s certain that both the chief and I will be crushed to death together. I asked the chief for support while looking around, and asked him how he got here.
“When all the guys guarding the hall rushed to one place, I knew you were there. There are several stairs coming up to the 2nd floor here, so it was easy to come up by going around.”
“…Is that so?”
“That’s right.”
The chief said so while showing me the way he came, and he moved forward while supporting me.
But even so, something, something felt strangely off. My stamina was greatly depleted and blood was dripping, so thoughts weren’t connecting well. But continuously, something.
“…What happened to Minus bastard? What about the detectives who entered inside?”
“Ah don’t worry. Thanks to you buying time, they found the lab inside. They say the army is coming too, now we just need to escape.”
The chief said so while pressing the button for what looked like a freight elevator. A freight elevator that wasn’t visible even when I roughly saw the internal map works even in this situation?
Superpower users not chasing me. The chief suddenly appearing. A superpower user collapsing after being shot. A freight elevator working in this situation?
“Fu, ck!”
Trusting my instincts, I tried to grab the chief’s collar with my one remaining arm and throw him with a hip toss, but the chief undid my hand with too light a movement and threw me instead.
I felt my lungs shrink as I crashed into the floor. Coughing, I got up and glared at the bastard who still looked like the ‘chief’, saying:
“If you’re going to lie, at least tell a proper lie, you bastard.”
“…Good gracious. The drug must have entered your mouth. You’re thinking properly? Detective, you always surprise me.”
Noise appeared on the familiar balding chief’s face, then soon the face of that bastard with the annoying squinting eyes was revealed.
That’s right. Everything I saw after coming up to the 2nd floor was – all this bastard’s hallucination. That fortune-telling house elder was really right, wasn’t she? I sighed and glared at that bastard.
