Chapter 30
“Alright, that’s how the auction comes to an end!”
“Wow, there were really unexpected combinations!”
“Coaches who couldn’t sign their desired players must be disappointed, but now these players are the team members. Like it or not, we need to mesh until the round after next week.”
“The semifinals start two weeks from now, right?”
“Yes, it’s a bit of a short notice, but at this time in two weeks, Groups A and B will each hold a best of five series.”
“Each team will be given two ban cards. Coaches must carefully analyze who the ace of the opposing team is, what their main picks are, and use the ban cards wisely.”
“Yes. The ban-pick aspect is one of the charms of team competitions. I can already hear the coaches’ heads spinning.”
“Then, this has been the explanation of the rules and introduction of players for the 1st Annual EOW Streamer Tournament, 2030. We’ll wrap it up here.”
“Thank you for watching, viewers!”
The desk hosts bow their heads.
Is it finally over?
I glanced at the chat room, trying to organize my team’s composition in my head.
So, the team is under coach ‘Jacky.’ I’m the highest tier, with the others being Platinum, Gold, Gold, and Silver.
Apparently, Grandmaster and Challenger players were not allowed to participate in the first tournament for balance reasons.
It’s a tournament where the highest tier is Master,
and it reminded me of the PC Bang tournament I went with friends in the past.
Jacky’s team is made up of one Gold and one Silver player who were second choice.
Their nicknames are… Tex, Ryuah, Cheolwoo. And what was the name of the last one?
I couldn’t remember.
With the ramen noodles still lingering in my mouth, I held my head in frustration, wondering who the last one was. Should I rewatch it, perhaps?
[Jacky: Mollru, can you join Discord right now?]
A little notification pops up with a message.
It was my team coach, Jacky.
Oh, right now?
Is it normal to have a meeting right after the team composition?
[Mollru >> Jacky: Yes, I’m fine.]
I put away the ramen that was still on the desk and shared my Discord ID, getting invited to the voice chat.
The five members, excluding me, had already gathered.
The call was in progress, and from the lights on the profiles, it seemed I was the last to join.
There’s nothing more awkward than interrupting while people are already chatting.
I silently waded into the conversation, offering a greeting.
“Hello…”
“Ah, can you hear me? I’m Tex.”
“I can hear you well.”
“I’m having a bit of lag; hold on.”
The voice was that of a cheerful man, a little higher in pitch but not frivolously so.
Is this Tex?
Tex responded with a low-toned Cheolwoo and coach Jacky joining in.
In the meantime, Tex’s excited voice rang out.
“I’m really looking forward to this. When I first got the invite to the tournament, I was genuinely surprised. I wanted to join when I heard a tournament was happening, but I wasn’t sure it would happen.”
“Me too! I’ve never had so many viewers watching me like this! It’s also my first time playing with other streamers like this. It’s going to be so fun!”
“I’m feeling a bit… nervous. This is really big. The prize money and everything.”
A high-pitched woman sympathized with Tex.
Ryuah also seemed to have high expectations for this tournament.
In contrast, another woman spoke in a small murmur.
The delicate-voiced streamer, Papi Joah, looked a little tense.
“That’s not just all good, though. Losing and being outed can really put pressure on you because of the number of viewers. There will be a lot of backseat gaming.”
Knowing that they watch every little thing from practice to the tournament—.
The only streamer I knew by name, Cheolwoo, spoke up.
I remember watching his videos on YouTube a few times.
His real name is Lee Cheolwoo.
Stream name: Cheolwoo.
He can be seen as a veteran figure in the streaming community, well-established with loyal viewers.
He was a person far removed from the usual promotional goals of participating in a tournament.
Did he say he came to this tournament because he wanted to play together with other streamers?
As the oldest with the most streaming experience among us, he was aware of the shadows inevitably cast by such tournaments.
“Ugh… This backseat gaming talk is suddenly making me worried. What do I do?”
Ryuah, who seemed to have had some past experiences, reacted to the term backseat gaming.
Tex and Cheolwoo comforted her gently.
But did no one hear my greeting?
I couldn’t catch the moment to introduce myself again.
Did I even fit in here?
No, it seemed everyone was having fun with each other, and the audio wasn’t silent at all.
What’s with this cheerful atmosphere?
“Is everyone here? I know you’re all busy with your streams, but thanks for gathering. I’m going to keep it short today. It’s not even a meeting, more like just wanting to chat.”
The coach, Jacky, began to speak.
“Coach, Mollru has not arrived yet.”
“Has Mollru not shown up yet? I thought I sent the invite earlier.”
“Is there an issue? They’re still streaming; I’ll check in.”
Cheolwoo’s heavy comment suddenly drew attention to me.
Everyone looked to me, causing me to panic.
“I-I’m here! Pardon the interruption!”
I stammered a little, fumbling my words.
The viewers responded with laughter.
[Teacher, you should greet loudly so everyone knows you’re here hahaha]
[??? : Oh, you were here? I didn’t even know it was silent.]
[??? : This is the first time I heard this person speak.]
[AAAAAHHH]
[Memories of my youth…]
[The PTSD hits hard]
[We were from the same tribe; I feel a connection.]
[In personal streams, they were lively, but now they’re hiding in their room?]
[Suah and Daesik were talking just fine though…]
[They both seemed a bit easy to handle eh]
[An honorable man doesn’t take words lightly, as I’ve recognized in you, Mollru.]
[Mollru is actually a woman though?]
[LOL]
[LOL, this is a hundred percent true hahaha]
Ever since I had been quietly listening to the streamers’ conversation, the chat had been mocking me.
This time, there really wasn’t anything I could say to deny it, so I kept my mouth shut.
“Oh, so you were here! Now that everyone is gathered, I guess we should share the agents we each use and brainstorm some combinations.”
“Teamplay formations are important.”
“Coach, don’t we have a team name?”
“A team name is a great idea. Let’s decide on that today.”
Wow, the spirit of the group suddenly brightened up.
Cheers and applause echoed through the headset.
I felt out of sync and just clapped along feebly.
[Mollru Exclusive Majohist O Daesik sent 1000 won!]
[Was this person a loner? Why are they so quiet?]
Ignoring the annoying donation chime, I focused on the coach’s proceedings.
“Alright, let’s go around and share our picks. Tex, I see you wrote down ex-soldier, scout, outlaw, and bomber. Is that correct?”
“Yes, I’ve tried other agents at least once. If needed, I can practice others too. Oh, I’ve mostly been using Swordsman recently, and that’s one of my main picks.”
“Who are you showing the Swordsman to right now?”
Tex gasped at Cheolwoo’s mixed with laughter voice.
The Swordsman had become my nickname by now.
It wouldn’t matter if someone else played it instead of me, though.
“I see, Mollru is here. I’ll pass on the Swordsman.”
“Okay, sounds good.”
Tex spoke with passion, while Jacky tapped the keyboard eagerly.
Tex, the Platinum user and next highest tier after me, would likely take on a dealer position.
One by one, we repeated the process of Jacky’s survey about our main agents, and Jacky noted them down.
“Papi Joah, you have Medic and Bard listed. Have you ever tried Witch?”
“No… Should I give it a shot?”
“No, let’s just wait until practice to see if we need it.”
Finally, it was my turn.
“Mollru, you use Swordsman, Sniper… and you can handle the rest of the agents too, right?”
“Yes, I can manage other agents as well.”
“Do you handle them all at the level of Swordsman or Sniper?”
“Yes. I can handle both dealer and tank without any problem.”
When it came time for me to list my main picks, I revealed all my capabilities.
Actually, after my body switched and physical abilities vastly improved, those two were the ones I mostly played.
Before that, I often played ex-soldier or scout, which are more strategic without much hunting.
It was mostly similar there.
Among dealers, except for those tricky agents needing extreme physique, I had proficiency across the board.
Even if I said I haven’t in a while, those experiences certainly didn’t just vanish.
“Woah… That’s impressive. I can’t fully grasp it, but it feels like it’ll be a lot easier to form combinations. I’m reassured.”
I’m weak against praise like that.
Just as I was awkwardly giggling, Jacky shifted the conversation to another topic.
“Alright, we’ve seen our picks, so let’s settle on a team name. Any good ideas?”
“Hmm, how about ‘Nothing Mollru?'”
“Isn’t that a bit too focused on Mollru?”
“How about ‘Cheonje,’ like heavenly first?”
“That’s too old-fashioned, bro. It doesn’t fit the vibe these days…”
Various suggestions came up, but none bore fruit.
Something like Mollru, Mol?Ru. Molrrrrrru.
Most of it was Tex’s nonsense.
Why does Tex keep trying to make a team name using me?
“Cheol-Taek-Papi is Mollru. What do you think?”
“Oh, is that just taking the first letters?”
“I just mashed together the first letters for fun.”
Ryuah, who hadn’t said anything until now, shared her thoughts.
“Isn’t that a bit forced? Since it’s Papi, it kind of sounds like a dog’s name.”
“That’s Pupper. These days, Papi is also a brand.”
“Really? I didn’t know that.”
“…I think this one’s the best among what we’ve come up with so far?”
Tex tried to retort, but Ryuah stood her ground and Papi Joah agreed.
Cheolwoo, who had felt despondent from being called outdated, finally spoke up.
“But the coach’s name is missing, you know?”
“Oh, I’m fine. It’s hard to combine mine.”
After various discussions from multiple people, the team name ‘Cheol-Taek-Papi is Mollru’ was formed.
Amidst the cheers of everyone, I stared at my monitor with a slightly sour expression.
What a bizarre name this is.
Will this team actually work out?
