chapter 6
6 – Cruel Roar
– Kwagagak!!!
The trees that soared high as they collided with the monster shattered into pieces.
Sharp wooden fragments scattered in all directions, and the peaceful elf village was stained with disaster in an instant.
The sight narrowed due to the rising dust. The sound faded due to the roar and scream.
I coughed and shouted at Pii.
“Pii! Are you okay?!”
[I’m fine!]
“What the hell is going on?!”
[A monster fell from the World Tree! There are no high elves now! The village is in danger!]
I lifted my head at Pii’s words and looked at the source of the noise.
Through the hazy dust, I saw something huge roaring.
White scales stained with blood, a long body as big as a house, and giant wings torn here and there.
A strange winged white weapon was destroying the village.
“What, what is that?!”
[That’s the fallen monster! Ampityr! Ampityr Draca!]
Amphitier.
It was a shocking sight that rivaled the Tyrannosaurus and the Lintburum that I saw on the way.
Are there such monsters of different kinds in this world?
My confidence in survival plummeted and I involuntarily shrank.
Please don’t look this way. Please don’t come to me.
I, who was trapped in prison, could only pray with bated breath.
“Damn it!”
But just then, a dizzying sight was captured by my eyes, which were focused on the beast.
“Lisia!!”
Lisia was crouching near the monster.
A huge tail whipped the ground, and a wing as big as a house swept the surroundings, and the young girl was frozen in horror.
The elves of the village were shouting at Lisia to evacuate, but there was no way that such a normal scream would reach Lisia, who had hearing impairment.
The rampaging Amphitier. The frozen Lisia.
It was dangerous. I needed a way to save Lisia.
I desperately needed a voice that would calm down Lisia, who was in panic, and direct her to evacuate.
“Beep!”
Beep would be possible.
Lisia, who had hearing impairment, could hear the voice of Beep, who spoke through mana.
Remembering that fact, I grabbed Beep, who was nearby.
Then I lifted him high in the sky and squeezed his slender waist.
[aaah!!]
“Pii! You are our hope! Tell Rishia to run this way!”
[Rishiaa!!]
“Louder!!”
[Rishiaaak!!]
Pii echoed me and screamed his eyes out.
But Rishia didn’t seem to hear and was still frozen.
My voice doesn’t reach her. If this goes on, Rishia is in danger.
As I was wondering if there was any way, I heard the elves’ desperate cries.
“Someone, please save that child!”
“The monster is too close! Give up and evacuate!”
“But!”
“There’s no way without a high elf!”
The screams that were getting farther away.
At that, my dizzy head cooled down.
The elves had given up on rescuing Rishia.
I was the only one left who could save Rishia.
If I don’t act, Rishia will die.
So,
‘I have to save Rishia.’
I wiped my face with a deep breath.
My hands, cold from the tension, were shaking like never before.
It didn’t matter if I could do it or not.
I finished my short resolution and opened my mouth firmly.
“Pii. You told me to get along with the elves, right?”
Pii, who was complaining of back pain, flinched and stopped.
Pii’s face, which met my eyes, had a look of bewilderment.
“I think I found a quick way to get close.”
[What, what is it?]
“It’s to give them an unforgettable favor.”
Green eyes that flashed with mischief. Cherry-like lips that spread into a smile.
Pii, who quickly grasped my plan, asked me.
[Can you do it?]
I asked back.
“Can I?”
I thought about it a little while ago, but it didn’t matter if I could do it or not.
Pii, who seemed to reach the same conclusion as me, nodded and answered.
[I have to do it!]
The action followed quickly.
I lifted Pii and moved him to the prison wall, shouting.
“Can you make an entrance?!”
[It’s hard to make it big!]
“Then bring me a chainsaw!”
[Okay!]
Pii ran out of the prison with a whimper and started dragging a chainsaw.
It was only a short distance of about 5M, but considering Pii’s height and strength, it felt too far.
One step, another step.
I rolled my feet back and forth, looking at Risia and Pii alternately.
And finally, the familiar grip was in my hand.
[Huff! Huff! He, it’s hard!]
“Good job!”
I grabbed the chainsaw and pulled the starter cord without hesitation.
Vroom! As the engine woke up, it spewed fire.
– Zzzap!!
The thorny bushes of the prison collapsed in an instant.
I was worried that they wouldn’t cut well because they were plants with magic, but they split like tofu when I pressed the rotating blade.
I ran out of the prison and shouted to Pii.
“You take Risia and evacuate to a safe place!”
[What are you going to do?!]
“I have to draw his attention so you can escape!”
[Got it!]
Bii, who heard my words, started running towards Rishia without a word.
It was a situation where we were going to fight a monster as big as a house, but he didn’t even say a word of encouragement because we were on the same wavelength.
Am I a little hurt?
As I walked towards the monster with that thought, Bii, who was running, turned around and shouted loudly.
[Ah! Gaul! Just remember this! You are insanely strong right now!]
I gripped the chainsaw and looked at Bii.
Bii said with a bright smile.
[You’ll be able to tell if you breathe in the mana in the air! You are a much scarier monster than that thing right now!]
Bii finished his words and ran back to Rishia.
I chuckled as I walked towards the monster.
I didn’t understand everything Bii said, but I felt energized by his absolute trust.
“Hoo….”
I saw Bii holding Rishia’s hand.
Now it was my turn to draw the monster’s attention so that Rishia and Bii could escape.
Did he say to breathe in the mana that was spread in the air?
I took a deep breath with all my might.
Thump.
My heart beat hard and vitality flowed through my whole body.
A tingling sensation stretched my veins and my muscles swelled up as if they were about to burst.
Thump.
Fear dissipated and excitement surged.
A chilling thrill dominated my reason, and hesitation vanished from my steps.
――――――!!
I roared as I raised the power of the chainsaw.
Gaul Crud.
As the meaning of my name implied, a cruel roar echoed through the forest.
* * *
――――――!!
――――――!!
Two monsters’ roars crossed in the forest.
One belonged to the Ampere that fell from the World Tree, and the other belonged to the chainsaw in my hand.
The plan to just draw its attention was long gone.
The Ampere was more agile than expected, and my body was more sturdy than I thought.
It would be safer to dig in rather than run away.
After making that judgment, I never left its side.
– Kwaaang!!
– Kagagak!!
Its huge tail swept the dust and attacked me.
I immediately plunged in and drove the chainsaw into it.
He writhed in pain, trying to shake me off.
I stuck my arm into the wound he had opened and clung to him desperately.
I moved without thinking, instinctively. I abandoned my humanity and roared like a beast.
Wildness took over my mind, stained with madness.
My vision was entirely green.
– Kyaaraaak―――!!
“Kraaak!!”
I thrust one hand into him and the other hand with the chainsaw.
The blade sparked as it rubbed against his scales, but when I raised the speed of the chainsaw, crimson blood splattered everywhere.
I lifted my head to check my position.
Blood and flesh flew up and covered my eyes, but I ignored them and looked around. The monster’s head came into my sight.
Close.
This distance would be fatal enough if I cut it off.
I lowered my head again and clenched my teeth.
It was time to dig into his throat.
– Kwagagak!!
“Kruuk!!”
The monster that had caught me thrashed around and the world turned upside down.
I was dragged between his huge body and the dirt floor for dozens of meters.
But my hand did not let go of him, and the chainsaw was still tearing his flesh.
Crack!
I felt his bones shatter as his movement slowed down.
He seemed to have snapped his spine as his movement became noticeably sluggish around the chainsaw.
I can do it now.
I pushed the chainsaw into his body like digging a tunnel.
– Kyaaahhh―――!!
He opened his mouth wide as he made his last struggle.
Because I was buried in his body, he had to tear his own flesh to bite me.
Giant fangs as big as human arms pressed down on me.
I pressed the slippery chainsaw with my weight and dug deeper.
Kagak!
Finally, his body split in two and the spinning blade scraped the dirt floor.
“Krrrgh!!”
Maybe because he looked like a winged snake, he didn’t die right away even though his body was severed.
I had to endure until he died, buried in his blood.
It was hard to breathe with the horrible smell of blood. I felt like vomiting from the squeezing flesh.
How long did I hold my breath and endure?
I heard a familiar voice from somewhere.
[Gaul!]
It was Bii’s voice.
His fading consciousness slowly resurfaced.
I lifted my battered body and climbed onto the massive lump of flesh.
The amputee bastard was already dead.
[Are you okay?!]
“H-how could this be.”
“He killed the monster by himself….”
As I stepped on the monster’s corpse, a buzzing sound filled the surroundings.
I lifted my creaking head and saw countless elves watching me.
They all had faces of shock and awe.
They seemed quite surprised by the fact that I killed the monster.
[We were worried about you!]
“I’m fine… no?”
I lowered my head at the sound of voices and saw Pii and Lishia.
Thankfully, they both looked unharmed and well.
I protected them.
With that relief, my strength left me and I collapsed on the spot.
[Hey, snap out of it!]
“Ah!”
As I fell, Pii and Lishia rushed over and supported me.
Well, it wasn’t really support, considering their height.
I didn’t hate it or feel uncomfortable.
It felt easier to breathe thanks to the fresh scent of the elves and spirits.
I smiled weakly and spoke to Pii.
“At this rate… we’ll have to… be friends, right?”
Pii nodded fervently at my words.
And as if that wasn’t enough, he started shouting at the elves who were watching me.
[You guys! Are you still going to doubt him after seeing this?!]
Pii seemed determined to make the most of this opportunity.
Knowing that it was all for my sake, I quietly watched Pii’s actions.
Then, Pii got so excited that he pointed at the sky and yelled.
[He is the chosen apostle of the goddess!]
Huh? What did he say?
[The strongest warrior of the Great Forest! The guardian of nature and wildness!]
No, wait.
[He is definitely a druid!!]
…Pii, what are you talking about?
