Chapter 3: Working in Dorobiga Paradise
"Speaking of which, should I start burning incense before writing my diary next time? Maybe I wasn't devout enough, and that's why I didn't get any good draws."
The more he thought about it, the more it seemed like a plausible theory.
Amamiya Ren decided that tomorrow, he would wake up early, bathe, burn incense, and write his diary in the best possible state before drawing the next prize.
Maybe he'd finally get something worthwhile.
Then, he suddenly remembered—tomorrow was the weekend, which meant it was his workday.
"Let me check."
He took out his phone and checked his schedule. Sure enough, tomorrow was his workday, and unfortunately, it was at a place he really didn't want to go.
"Dorobiga Park… working as a mascot… The place where Death and Unicorns often go on dates… and a hotspot for frequent incidents."
"I really don't want to go."
Although Amamiya Ren had long since forgotten most of Detective Conan's plot after sixteen years of living in this world, the tragedy that happened at the beginning of Dorobiga Paradise still haunted him.
After all, that case's execution was quite unforgettable.
But skipping work wasn't an option this time.
Because the employer was offering a lot of money.
An eight-hour shift paid 100,000 yen—12,500 yen per hour. That was an incredibly high wage.
Honestly, if the pay wasn't so tempting, Amamiya Ren would have skipped working at Dorobiga Park altogether.
"Forget it. The money is good."
"For that kind of pay, a little risk is worth it."
100,000 yen might not be much for an ordinary family, but for someone living paycheck to paycheck, it was a significant income.
Sure, Dorobiga Park had its risks, but it wasn't so bad. For that kind of money, Amamiya Ren refused to believe anything serious would happen this time.
Having made his decision, he continued scrolling through the job details on his phone.
Job duties: Wear a mascot costume, hand out balloons to children, and take photos with guests.
"A mascot costume? It's probably going to be big and heavy. The weather's decent right now, but wearing that thing is definitely going to be exhausting. I need to go to bed early tonight."
A worker needed to maintain their energy for the job, and Amamiya Ren was well aware of that.
There wasn't anything else he needed to do today, so he decided to sleep early.
After placing his phone on the bedside table, he lay down and immediately fell asleep.
He had developed a good habit of sleeping early, never staying up past 10 PM.
Good sleep meant good energy, and in his case, it was also a survival strategy.
Because in Beika City, the best rental apartments weren't the ones that looked the nicest from the outside.
Most apartments with great locations, good lighting, excellent interiors, and ridiculously cheap rent… had all been the sites of serious murders.
In Beika City, "murder houses" were the cheapest properties on the market, and if you were lucky, you could snag one at an absurdly low price.
For example, the apartment Amamiya Ren was renting—
120 square meters, top-tier interior design, high-rise building… only 10,000 yen per month, and even included free utilities.
But of course, when the rent is that cheap, it means the murder case was really bad.
To put it simply—there were three spirit entities residing in the apartment.
At first, Amamiya Ren didn't dare to rent it. But the price was just too tempting.
Free utilities? 10,000 yen a month?
He had no choice but to take it.
He signed a two-year lease. Last year was the first, and now it was the second.
Luckily, he had survived so far by following a simple rule: never be active at the same time as the spirits.
By deliberately adjusting his schedule to avoid overlapping with theirs, he had managed to live peacefully in the apartment for an entire year.
The Next Morning
It was a bright and sunny day.
The first thing Amamiya Ren did after waking up was greet the spirits.
"Good morning. Looks like we made it through another peaceful day."
After a simple morning routine, he packed his bag and left the apartment.
Dorobiga Park was one of the largest amusement parks in Beika City, filled with attractions and entertainment zones.
With a massive number of tourists every day, it was considered an excellent place to work.
At least, that's what most people thought.
But Amamiya Ren remained wary.
After all, places like this always seemed to attract the God of Death.
Upon arriving at Dorobiga Park, he followed the registration procedures and was granted entry.
Most employees had already submitted their information in advance, otherwise, checking in every worker one by one on the day of their shift would be a nightmare.
After entering, Amamiya Ren immediately headed to his assigned work area to meet his boss.
"Nice to meet you, Amamiya."
The female manager greeted him warmly. She appeared to be around 30 years old, but signs of overwork had already started to show on her face.
She managed an ice cream shop within the park—one that was said to be extremely profitable.
In response, Amamiya Ren gave a small bow.
"Hello."
The manager studied him for a moment, then smiled.
"Just as I heard—you're not very talkative. But that's actually a good thing. People who talk too much aren't suited for mascot roles."
Amamiya Ren completely understood what she meant.
In this job, being bad at talking was actually an advantage.
"I won't waste time with unnecessary details. Let's go over your work schedule and responsibilities."
The female manager got straight to the point.
"Your morning shift runs from 9 AM to 12 PM. Then you have a lunch break until 1:30 PM. The afternoon shift lasts from 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM."
"Your tasks include distributing promotional flyers, handing out balloons to children, and taking photos with guests. Understood?"
Her explanation was clear and concise. Amamiya Ren nodded slightly.
"Understood."
The manager checked the time—it was still a little while before his shift officially started.
"Since you're early, you can head to the dressing room, store your belongings, and try on your mascot costume."
Amamiya Ren had no objections and followed her instructions.
The dressing room contained several oversized mascot costumes in various sizes, clearly designed for employees of different heights.
After looking through the options, he picked one he liked—a mouse mascot wearing a hat, with giant eyes and a puffy mouth.
It looked adorable—exactly the kind of character that children would love.
As he examined the costume, he muttered to himself—
"I just hope nothing crazy happens at work today."
