Chapter 223: Chapter 223: Captain's Peak of Life
"By the way, where's Wanda?" Quicksilver asked abruptly.
"She's not here," Thor replied with a mischievous smile. "I've taken her back to Asgard. After all, we're not exactly popular these days. If we're not careful, we'll be legally declared enemies and killed on sight."
The Avengers collectively groaned, black lines metaphorically forming on their faces. Thor had a way of turning grim realities into offhand jokes.
It wasn't far from the truth, though. With so many gathered in Tony Tower, there was no way Washington wasn't aware of their meeting. If they hadn't acted yet, it was only because they chose to look the other way. Confronting the Avengers at this point would likely accelerate the country's already fragile disintegration.
Ignoring them altogether was tacit acknowledgment of their strength, but admitting past mistakes—like the Sokovia Accords—was a step Washington still wasn't ready to take.
Thor seemed content to leave things there, offering little more than a casual farewell as he turned to leave.
"You're really not going to get involved?" Tony's voice stopped him. "You've saved the world more times than I can count. This time—you're really not going to step in?"
Thor halted, glancing over his shoulder. "It's not that I can't step in," he said with a wry smile. "It's that I won't unless I absolutely have to."
Spider-Man looked confused, his youthful naivety on full display. "But… didn't you say that with great power comes great responsibility?"
To everyone's surprise, it was Tony—Thor's usual foil—who stepped in. His tone was uncharacteristically serious. "Kid, that line? It's about taking responsibility for your own actions, not using it to guilt-trip others. For Thor, stepping in now would mean compromising himself—and by extension, Asgard. Even a symbolic compromise is too much."
The room fell silent as the weight of Tony's words settled over them. Thor gave a small nod of acknowledgment before disappearing into the elevator.
Three days later, at a public rally organized by Underwood, Steve Rogers stood before a sea of cameras. His face was solemn, his voice steady as he made the announcement.
"I won't let you down," Steve declared. "I won't betray your trust. I've decided to run in the election—and I will not lose."
For a moment, there was silence. Then, the crowd erupted in thunderous applause, cheers echoing into the skies. Steve Rogers, the embodiment of the American Dream, had taken up the mantle once more.
Steve's campaign, as expected, faced relentless attacks from the two major political parties. But support for him grew rapidly. Stark Industries, led by Tony Stark, was the first to openly endorse him, with Tony himself making a public statement of support. Soon after, Wilson Fisk, the mayor of New York and a major figure in the business world, followed suit.
Behind the scenes, Fisk's influence moved like clockwork. the kingpin of organized power, mobilized an intricate network of officials, many of whom had been quietly under his control for years. FBI agents, local representatives, and influential figures all voiced their backing for Steve, tipping the scales of the election.
In just days, Steve Rogers became the frontrunner, his position nearly unassailable.
As the election results came in, they confirmed what many had anticipated: Steve Rogers had won by a landslide. He became the first super-powered individual to take office as President of the United States.
It was a historic day.
At his inauguration, Steve stood tall, his presence commanding as he addressed the nation:
"Thank you for being here today," he began, his voice carrying across the massive crowd. "I'll keep this brief. I'm honored to have been chosen by the people. But I must remind you—I'm a soldier, not a politician."
The crowd listened intently, his sincerity unmistakable.
"Our nation is in crisis. We're fractured, uncertain, and teetering on the edge of collapse. The situation is dire, but I believe in the resilience of the American people. My grandmother used to say, 'Don't seek strength in challenges—seek challenges to find your strength.' I've lived by those words."
Steve paused, scanning the faces in the crowd.
"I know what it feels like to grow up in despair. But I've also learned that everyone has the potential to rise above it. We all have a responsibility to take care of one another, no exceptions. If I'm called to lead, I will answer. If I'm not, I'll step aside. But I will not abandon this nation."
The crowd erupted in cheers, but Steve's gaze remained steady.
"Today, we stand at a crossroads. Our once-great country is divided, its foundations weakened. We must rebuild—not just our infrastructure, but our trust in one another. This crisis demands that every one of us give our best, not just for ourselves, but for future generations."
He raised his right hand, his voice strong and unwavering.
"I, Steve Rogers, Captain America, do solemnly swear to faithfully execute the office of President, and to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."
In the crowd, Thor stood with a faint smile, watching the culmination of events he had quietly orchestrated. The cheering masses hung on Steve's every word, their faith renewed.
Turning to those nearby, Thor's grin widened as he muttered, "What if Steve suddenly shouted, 'Hail Hydra!' right now? What a twist that would be."
A muffled snort broke the solemn atmosphere as the comment drew stifled laughter from those within earshot.
