Chapter 224: Chapter 224: "Synths"
In Samuel Young's personal quarters, everything had been purposefully scaled up in size. His fixed bed and chairs were far more spacious than those used by ordinary personnel.
After all, Samuel's physical body had grown stronger as Atlas' power continued to enhance him, and this was most evident in his height.
Currently, Samuel stood at 3.66 meters tall. If he donned his custom power armor, he would reach a terrifying height of nearly 3.9 meters.
While this increased strength had its benefits, it also brought Samuel many inconveniences, especially in daily life. Though he could use psychic abilities to adjust to some situations, there was always a sense of restriction. Thankfully, the engineering department had taken this into account during construction, sparing him from much frustration.
At this moment, seated at his oversized desk, Samuel was watching a video message sent by Horus, who was currently in the Avatar universe.
As for real-time communication, the fleet was currently experiencing a six-day communication delay with Fertile Star, making holographic video calls impossible.
Thus, Samuel was only receiving messages sent six days earlier.
However, everything with the company was running smoothly, with no urgent matters requiring his immediate attention. Otherwise, Samuel wouldn't have chosen, three months ago, to lead the fleet to the outer reaches of the Orion Arm.
After finishing the video, Samuel used a physical keyboard and mouse to reply to Horus:
"You will temporarily serve as the governor of Universe 02 until the situation is fully stabilized. Once the integration is complete, I'll consider other candidates.
Additionally, based on the integration progress you reported, it's clear that all the trainees who received gene seeds are now combat-ready.
Therefore, transfer the seven trainee battalions to Fertile Star, where they will continue combat training by participating in the integration of Universe 08."
After editing the message, Samuel clicked "Send."
Horus' unification fleet had encountered no significant obstacles in seizing Earth in the Avatar universe, largely due to the vast difference in power between the two sides.
The main source of casualties came from stubborn elites who relied on their remaining loyal forces and urban areas full of civilians to wage street battles against Atlas' forces.
However, this was ultimately futile resistance, incapable of altering the inevitable trend of unification.
The most remarkable aspect of the campaign was the "small" group of over 7,000 Astartes trainees.
Though they had yet to reach adulthood and hadn't undergone the twenty specialized surgeries, the enhancements brought by the gene seeds—boosting strength, reaction speed, and agility—were enough to make these middle school-aged children some of the most formidable forces within Atlas.
Moreover, these kids were natives of the Doom movie universe. Compared to children from other universes, they were far more warlike and resolute, their spirits unbroken by either slaughter or setbacks.
After all, their lives before Atlas opened a portal to the Doom universe were like living in hell.
Samuel intended to deploy these seven trainee battalions to Fertile Star to further enhance Atlas' "boarding" capabilities.
After responding to Horus, Samuel quickly dealt with the rest of his tasks.
Before long, he had cleared out all the "unread messages" that would have annoyed someone with OCD.
With his work done, Samuel rose and left his quarters, walking down the corridor toward the bridge.
As he walked, the passing crew members habitually greeted him with a "Boss" or "Hello, Boss."
Samuel nodded in acknowledgment until he came across Halsey, who had just stepped off the rail train.
"Boss, where are you headed?" Halsey, now accustomed to being part of Atlas, also addressed Samuel as "Boss."
"I'm going to check out the research center," Samuel replied.
"Oh, perfect timing. Let's go together."
"Sure."
Samuel didn't object, though he slowed his pace to ensure the 1.7-meter-tall young doctor could keep up.
The two walked in silence for a while.
"..."
Walking behind Samuel, Halsey couldn't help but see him as a "moving mountain." Her thoughts also drifted to wondering how Samuel...
"Dr. Halsey, your colleagues have probably mentioned that I can read minds, right?" Samuel's sudden words startled Halsey, causing her to shake off the mental images she'd been conjuring.
"Sorry, Boss. I was just curious."
"I understand," Samuel didn't press the issue further, instead changing the subject. "In three Earth days, the fleet will arrive at a region about one-third of a light-year from Shield World 0459. The company will soon face dual threats from the Flood and the Covenant, and we may need your assistance. Be prepared."
"Understood." Feeling a bit guilty, Halsey nodded.
Still, she couldn't deny that her curiosity had only grown!
It seemed she would have to find some time to ask Alexia, who had a close relationship with Samuel, for answers.
Before long—
Swoosh—
As the automatic doors slid open and closed, the two entered the onboard research center.
The space was vast and well-equipped, providing an ideal research environment for the core members of the biology department.
Everyone was focused on their tasks, undisturbed by Samuel's arrival.
Samuel and Halsey then entered a lab marked "Unauthorized Entry Prohibited."
Upon entering, they saw a female clone wearing orange clothing lying on a multifunctional surgical table, while Alexia stood nearby, busy at the control panel.
Alexia remained focused on her work, and without waiting for either Samuel or Halsey to ask, she explained:
"I'm in the process of transferring App's data to a clone body grown from top-tier D-class personnel... Hmm, now it's just a matter of waiting for the progress bar to complete."
Only then did Alexia look up, turning her gaze toward Samuel as she began to enthusiastically explain:
"Once the fleet reaches the outer region, we can't afford to be too reckless with real-time communication when sending ground forces to infiltrate Shield World 0459.
So, combining the company's well-developed consciousness transfer technology, I had a sudden thought: why not transfer an AI's 'consciousness' into a physical shell too?
If this succeeds, we could even transfer Melissa's data to help the forces explore 0459, while also gaining valuable experience in developing Synths. If it fails, no big loss."
Hearing Alexia's explanation, Halsey seemed to be deep in thought about the concept of "Synths."
"Excellent," Samuel wasn't particularly surprised.
He had come here specifically to discuss transferring AI into "mobile bodies," and Alexia's ideas aligned perfectly with his own.
