Ch. 93
Chapter 93: Primary Mission
After leaving the office, Gauss let out a sigh of relief.
That Warlock named Shirley had put quite a bit of pressure on him.
It felt like his entire aura had been suppressed.
The sudden encounter with a mysterious powerhouse had also subdued the pride he had developed after becoming a Professional.
There was always someone stronger out there.
There were still many powerful people in this world; advancing into a Profession was merely the beginning.
He walked further along the corridor.
Petra led him to the VIP room.
This was a VIP room that was not usually open to the public. It was mainly used to receive Adventurers of the Professional class.
Although most Bronze-rank Adventurers, after getting used to the intensity of Entry-level Missions, rarely came to the first floor for Normal Commissions, there were occasional exceptions.
Sometimes, even Iron-rank or stronger Adventurers would come to take Normal Commissions. Of course, for them, this might be just a way to cultivate sentiment and relax.
Gauss was guided into the room, and the lights overhead lit up automatically.
The exquisite interior decor appeared before Gauss’ eyes. Unlike the roughly decorated hall, this small room was elegantly arranged, giving one a sense of inner peace upon entering.
Though it was an enclosed space, the air didn’t feel stuffy in the slightest. On the contrary, it was very fresh.
Gauss looked around curiously. He had visited the Adventurer’s Guild many times before but had never known there was such a good place.
"Lady Shirley actually has a very good temper. Among the several adults in the Guild, she’s the friendliest towards us regular receptionists," Petra spoke up on Shirley’s behalf after leading Gauss into the room.
Gauss found a high-backed armchair and sat down.
"I understand. It’s just that her presence is a bit too intense, a bit..."
"Hehe, after you interact with Lady Shirley a few more times, you won’t feel that way anymore. You rest here for a while, I’ll go write a registration report first."
"Alright, you go ahead."
Gauss nodded and turned to examine the layout of the VIP room.
A soft golden glow streamed from the crystal lamps embedded in the pure white ceiling. The lighting was clearly designed with care—neither dim nor glaring—perfectly illuminating every corner of the room.
The walls were covered with deep olive-green velvet wallpaper, faintly embroidered with the emblem of the Adventurer’s Guild in silver thread—low-key yet dignified.
At the center of the room stood a heavy oak round table, its surface smooth as a mirror. The edges were carved with intertwined patterns of vines and peculiar runes. On the table were neatly arranged cups of clean water and food.
In the corner stood a floor clock bordered with brass. Its pendulum swung rhythmically with a clicking sound. On the wall opposite hung a large sheepskin map, depicting the entire kingdom and its surrounding danger zones.
Graystone Town was just the tiniest dot on the map, barely noticeable, even Emerald Forest was only palm-sized. Gauss suspected that if this map weren’t hanging in the Graystone Town Adventurer’s Guild, the town probably wouldn’t even be marked.
The clearest evidence was that Wormwood wasn’t specially marked on the map either; only cities were shown.
Gauss stared at it for quite a while before exhaling deeply and reclining against the chair back, fully relaxed.
The deep brown leather upholstery was soft yet supportive, making it so comfortable that drowsiness nearly crept up on him.
So good.
It had been some time since he arrived in this world. For some reason, memories of his previous life were growing blurry and distant, like something that had happened ages ago.
The decor of this VIP reception room was undoubtedly the finest he had seen since coming to this world—better even than many high-end interiors in his past life.
He inhaled the delicate fragrance floating in the air.
Gauss couldn't help but recall the scene in the Adventurer’s Hall outside during peak hours.
The packed crowds, the overlapping chatter that buzzed into his ears, the stinking sweat odor from Adventurers in leather armor who hadn’t washed in days, the faded tile patterns worn down by countless footfalls...
Looking again at the luxurious room with only Petra and himself, he became even more acutely aware that Professionals and non-Professionals truly lived in two different worlds.
In this world, resources gathered unreservedly around that small group of people who wielded great power.
Gauss didn’t particularly dislike the boisterous atmosphere of the main hall, but if he could have a bit of peace and quiet every now and then, that would be nice too.
While he was filled with emotion—
Petra finally finished filling out her report.
"Alright, it's done." Petra set the report aside and placed two crystals, one large and one small, onto the oak table.
"Gauss, hold onto this large blue crystal. This is the Mission Crystal. As a Professional, you should be able to read the mission information from it"
"Even among Entry-level Missions, some are harder than others. The ones you can currently accept are all Tier 1 Entry-level Commissions, which are among the safer types."
"Alright, thank you."
Gauss reached out and picked up the large crystal.
The moment he touched the rhomboid crystal, a magical fluctuation spread from within.
Gauss felt his Class Rank being subtly stirred. A cool sensation swept over his scalp, and in the next moment, it seemed he could see the massive amount of data stored inside the Mission Crystal.
He immersed himself in the information flow within the Mission Crystal.
Very soon, he sensed the numerous Tier 1 Entry-level Missions listed within.
The monsters involved were many—familiar old acquaintances like Goblins and Slimes, as well as monsters Gauss had not yet encountered, such as Gnolls, Fishmen, Rust Monsters, Fire Salamanders, and so on.
To Gauss's surprise, the monsters involved in these Tier 1 Entry-level Missions were mostly without Challenge Ratings.
However, the quantity exceeded that of Normal Commissions—typically numbering over forty—and a few even noted the presence of Mutated Individuals.
As for commissions involving monsters with Challenge Ratings, there were only a handful, and each was clearly marked with a warning: “Solo with Caution.”
Clearly, in the intelligence system of the Adventurer’s Guild, even newly promoted Tier 1 Professionals did not hold the upper hand when facing monsters with Tier 1 Challenge Ratings alone.
But… did this mean his strength far surpassed others of his Class Rank? Gauss couldn’t help but feel a little pleased.
He had slain a Mantis Hunter—a foe other rookie Professionals struggled to handle—while he was still an apprentice. Although he had taken advantage of certain conditions, the kill was real. So after his promotion to Professional, his combat strength should far exceed that of other rookie Professionals.
His gaze lingered a few seconds on the commissions involving Challenge Rating monsters before he decisively looked away and focused on the more ordinary low-tier monsters.
Even if he believed he could defeat Tier 1 elite monsters that other rookies couldn’t handle, he had no intention to push himself recklessly.
Better to obediently farm some Small Monsters first.
Especially since these missions all involved dozens of low-tier Small Monsters—very satisfying.
One such mission was worth several Normal Commissions, with efficiency multiplied many times over.
The only thing to be careful of was not getting overwhelmed by a swarm of Small Monsters. But that was unlikely. He possessed a powerful armor skill, and as long as he remained cautious, there shouldn’t be any major issues.
His gaze wandered over the mission list for quite a while.
In the end, he chose a monster subjugation mission.
【Redcap Goblin Tribe Extermination】
Mission Details: Exterminate a medium-sized Goblin tribe. All targets must be eliminated.
Mission Location: See map.
Mission Duration: Within two weeks.
Mission Notes: This is a medium-sized tribe with over 50 adult Goblins. The leader is a Redcap Goblin (no Challenge Rating, but stronger in combat than an ordinary Goblin). Proceed with caution.
Mission Reward: 90 Silver Coins.
Yes, even now that he had started accepting Entry-level Missions, he still chose Goblins without hesitation.
What could he do—there were just so many Goblins.
Besides, he possessed the Racial Talent—Rapid Digestion—which required him to hunt large numbers of Goblins to improve.
He compared his combat power and judged that completing the commission shouldn’t be a problem.
Moreover, he didn’t need to charge straight into the Goblin tribe head-on. Arson, poisoning, ambushes—weren’t there plenty of ways?
"Monster Kill Count: 179"
If all went well, after this mission he should easily surpass the 200-kill milestone.
And because Entry-level Mission monsters came in greater numbers, Gauss felt his monster-killing efficiency would increase as well.
The only downside was that this mission required him to enter the Emerald Forest and travel a fair distance inward, making it more dangerous.
But then again, if a Goblin tribe of over fifty had been located near areas of frequent human activity, other Professional Adventurers would have already accepted a commission to clear it. No way it’d still be available to him.
"I’ve made my choice." Gauss looked at Petra."How do I confirm it"
"Just focus on the specific mission for a few seconds, and it will be accepted."
Following Petra’s instructions, the corresponding Goblin mission on the Mission Crystal soon disappeared.
"Gauss, since you're still an Unranked Adventurer, your Identity Badge hasn't been directly linked to the Mission Crystal yet.
I’ll need to register it manually for you. Hand me your Identity Badge and wait here for a bit. I’ll be right back."
"Oh, and this smaller one is your Record Crystal for the mission. You’ll need to carry it with you at all times during the mission, or else your Assessment Result will be invalid."
"Understood."
After reminding him, Petra quickly took the Mission Crystal and stepped into another room to handle the registration.
Gauss, meanwhile, picked up the transparent crystal and examined it curiously.
He could feel a subtle magical fluctuation emanating from it—faint but distinct.
It felt very light in his hand, giving off a cheap, not-very-valuable impression.
It was probably due to the existence of such recording tools that the Adventurer’s Guild could confidently allow candidates to complete missions alone.
After all, when submitting the mission, one only needed to inspect the contents of the Record Crystal to determine whether the candidate had completed the task solo, relied on assistance, or used some other special method.
Gauss pocketed the crystal.
Before officially departing to exterminate Goblins, he would still need to rest for two days, replenish supplies, and purchase new gear.
