Chapter 73: The Feathered Snake

The ruin stood undisturbed, the entrance sealed with thick quartzite, a material harder and denser than granite. Alex placed his hand on the door and sensed very little water inside. "Document exploration," he muttered under his breath.

"Yes, Sir," came the mechanical voice from his wristwatch. Two small mechanical orbs emerged from the belly of the shuttle, one recording high-definition footage of the ruin while the other hovered beside Alex.

Using his understanding of the mechanisms from the shuttle's scan, Alex made his move. With a rumble, the massive door shifted to the side, and Alex enveloped the entire pyramid in an energy bubble, preventing the water pressure from flooding the interior.

The process is slow, but he wasn't concerned about the time, it was about the preservation.

Alex walked inside the ruin at a relaxed pace, the mechanical orb keeping pace with him as it took footage of the well-preserved hieroglyphs and wall paintings. The walls were adorned with depictions of a prosperous society, people dressed in gold and gemstone ornaments, harvesting crops, and fighting strange creatures: massive tigers, fish with human heads, and reptilian beasts like dinosaurs. A king stood at the top of a pyramid, holding the sun. With a snake on his shoulder, though it was vague it can still be seen.

As Alex moved deeper into the ruin, slabs of stone occasionally fell from the ceiling, and hidden traps threatened to open beneath his feet. But he navigated leisurely, without avoiding the pitfalls. To him, it was nothing.

After two sharp turns, he found himself on a lowered, square platform with thirteen steps at each of its four corners. At the center of the platform lay a golden sarcophagus, one meter long, half a meter wide, and a third high, with a lid in the shape of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god of the ancient Mayans.

Massive piles of gold, including shields, bars, humanoid and animal figures, scepters, masks, gold plates with inscriptions, and raw gemstones of all sizes, from boulders to small pebbles, surrounded the sarcophagus.

Alex approached the sarcophagus. Though there were no inscriptions, the image of a feathered snake and small figures kneeling in reverence were carved into the lid. With a deep breath, he lifted the lid.

Inside, there was a transparent gooey liquid, and a small snake with small white snake scales, resembling pearls. Two sets of folded wings rested against its back, and soft feathery down ran from the head to the tail.

"Origin energy, but how?" Alex whispered, stunned. He extended his perception throughout the entire underwater ruin but found no clues to explain the presence of such energy or how it had come to be here.

Frowning, Alex put everything; gold, gems, artifacts, and the sarcophagus into his ring, and made his way out of the chamber. Boarding the shuttle, he removed the golden coffin and called Lily and Arwen out.
