Chapter 28: Chapter 26 The Smaller, The Scarier_1
The one-horned mule, having suffered two blows in succession, became even more vicious, and Zheng Yichen felt as if the arm entangled with it was about to break. Yet, he kept a death grip on the mule's only horn; releasing the distance would either make the creature more troublesome or allow it to escape.
Hiss hiss—
The harsh hissing sound, like a demonic chant, flooded into Zheng Yichen's ears, making him feel as if not only his brain was trembling but also his ears, buzzing as if about to burst.
But still, he clung tightly to both the one-horned mule's horn and the black spear embedded in its neck. The more frantically the mule struggled, the more continuous damage the black spear inflicted, and in its fierce struggles, the one-horned mule gradually weakened.
Although the spear had not hit a directly fatal spot, the neck is a vulnerable area for any creature. The mule's frenzied struggles further tore the wound, and Zheng Yichen held on to its horn tightly, preventing it from delivering a fatal blow to him.
It could only drag Zheng Yichen and collide with trees in an attempt to shake him off. Zheng Yichen displayed remarkable stamina, which of course was not enough for a human and a mule in such a scenario, but the black spear also caused the mule to lose a lot of blood, aside from the physical damage.
After the initial burst, the one-horned mule's struggle grew weaker.
Zheng Yichen also felt the pain; he was dragged and crashed into trees by the mule, his viscera felt like they were breaking apart, and many bones were certainly broken. Under such impact, an ordinary person wouldn't be able to yell a third time.
He could hold on partly because he himself was an extraordinary creature. His basic attacks came with life steal, which required penetration to work, but the blood drained by the black spear from the mule was fed back to Zheng Yichen. He had never been so badly injured, so the feedback from this time led to a noticeable change in his body.
A highly active state significantly boosted his strength and, more importantly, his recovery ability.
On the other hand, the one-horned mule weakened as its wounds tore further and it lost more blood, until eventually its heavy body collapsed to the ground. The crimson tongue entwined around his arm also lost its strength. Zheng Yichen exhaled, then thrust the black spear into the one-horned mule's eye. The spear pierced through its head and stuck into the ground.
"Huff—" Sitting on the ground, Zheng Yichen looked at his swollen left arm, which was somewhat deformed; even a slight movement brought intense pain. After pulling out the black spear, Zheng Yichen retrieved his backpack, took out a knife with some difficulty, and cut off the head of the one-horned mule.
As for the body, he had no way to handle it by himself. The noise just then was not insignificant, and it would not be long before other Hunters arrived. All he could do was take the more important part. For the body, the most he could do was bleed it out.
He then quickly took out his phone and snapped a picture of the scene, to prove that it was him who had taken down the creature. The status of this task on the commission system changed from incomplete to under review.
"Tsk, this guy finally met his end, huh." A patrolling Hunter, attracted by the noise, looked at the body on the ground and clicked his tongue twice. Though the one-horned mule's head was taken, the remaining body characteristics were still clear.
"The Hunter who took this thing down isn't in great shape either." Another patrolling Hunter checked the surroundings and took out his phone to look at the task's status on the commission software. As expected, the task was already in semi-locked review status.
At this moment, they could attempt to complete the assignment by carrying the corpse directly, but since the one-horned mule's head had been taken, they would be investigated if they did so.
"Or maybe we could..." A patrolling Hunter looked at the body on the ground with some temptation, for this extraordinary creature was quite cunning, and thus the related assignment had a not insignificant reward. If they could find that Hunter...
"Forget it, a few minutes are enough for that person to have left." The Hunter who had been examining the mule's corpse stood up, dusting off his hands. The time wasn't enough for the person to have gotten very far, but it was enough to reach the vicinity of the temporary camp. If they were to pursue, it would take quite some time, and if discovered, they would be caught between a rock and a hard place.
Moreover, he had examined the mule's corpse and suspected the fatal wound was to the head; after the mule had fallen, it wasn't a sword or knife that pierced its skull, but a weapon like a bayonet had penetrated the head, leaving a round pit angled in the ground.
Besides that, the one-horned mule's body had too little blood left; hardly any blood flowed from where the head had been severed, leading him to suspect the Hunter who acted was an Extraordinary Being.
"Since the other party has left this corpse, then there's no need for us to be courteous." The Hunter who had some ideas spoke, seeing his companion did not approve of his earlier suggestion, and came up with a new one.
Zheng Yichen hadn't taken the corpse with him, which was as good as abandoning it, even though most of the blood from the one-horned mule had been drained. The body still had enough research value, and many research institutes were willing to purchase it. However, the most important part was, of course, the head.
"Sigh... I really should have prepared a vehicle." Just outside the southern forest, Zheng Yichen panted slightly, struggling to walk forward. With the fighting state completely over, as his excitement returned to normal, his body began to rebel.
Even a gentle step was very painful; drawing a large amount of blood from the one-horned mule had enhanced his physique, but such improvement required time to assimilate, not like adding points where you get as much improvement as you put in.
Furthermore, carrying the heavy head of the one-horned mule slowed his progress even more, and he didn't believe that the fellow Hunter he encountered in the dead of night was a good person.
He had rather give up the mule's corpse and merely complete the hunting assignment, not willing to take the gamble.
A rabbit appeared not far from Zheng Yichen; the little creature was very bold, hopping towards him upon sighting him. As it drew close to Zheng Yichen, it opened its three-lobed mouth, stretching it to the limit until its head split open like a chrysanthemum.
A black spear pierced through the center of that gaping mouth, and Zheng Yichen didn't even glance at the rabbit that had been impaled and turned dried-out, thinking to himself. The larger extraordinary creatures, despite growing some extra traits, seemed almost more normal.
These smaller extraordinary creatures always managed to deliver extra shocks. Perhaps it was because small creatures had smaller brains, so when they underwent changes, they became the new cutesy type.
Hiss, hiss—
A faint sound arose, and Zheng Yichen had become somewhat sensitive to such noises. Thankfully, this sound didn't belong to the mysterious one-horned mule, but to a snake... or not quite right, why had his chances of encountering extraordinary creatures suddenly increased so much??
