Chapter 18 - Buying a large bed
The incident had caused quite a stir, prompting Qin Nan to advise his wife to tone down her domineering demeanor. He urged her to show mercy and avoid recklessly killing, which could attract unnecessary trouble.
Keep a low profile whenever possible.
Although Shangguan Rouyue nodded in agreement, whether she would truly follow through remained uncertain.
Qin Nan sighed. A beautiful woman truly invites disaster. In the past, his trips to Yangshun City were always uneventful. But this time, with Shangguan Rouyue accompanying him, so much had happened.
He didn’t feel annoyed, though—after all, his wife handled all the troubles herself, leaving him with no need to intervene.
The lack of stress even gave him an opportunity to show off indirectly, as if his identity carried great significance. It was a perfect chance to “show off.”
Seizing the moment, Qin Nan flattered his wife, expressing his desire to become as powerful and commanding as her someday, so he could protect her and keep any audacious men from approaching.
Shangguan Rouyue’s lips curled into a gentle smile. “As long as you cultivate diligently, Hubby, you can definitely become as strong as me.”
As strong as her? That wouldn’t do. I have to be even stronger than my wifey. How else could I tease and dote on her every day?
With a playful grin, he pinched her soft, fair cheek, leaving a charming blush in its wake.
Shangguan Rouyue gave him a half-serious glare, though her eyes showed no real anger.
Afterward, she carried Qin Nan as they flew back to Niujiao Village. With her speed, they would be home by dusk.
…
When the sunset dyed the forest red, the couple arrived home.
They unpacked their purchases, which included essential supplies like oil, salt, and rice—enough to last two or three months.
The final item Shangguan Rouyue retrieved from her sleeve was a large bed.
Crafted from yellow pearwood, it was sturdy and durable, with a mosquito net to keep insects out. Most importantly, the bed was spacious, comfortably accommodating two people without feeling cramped.
The next morning, Qin Nan woke to find his wife’s face still flushed with a delicate shyness. Her gaze held a hint of reproach as she looked at him.
Qin Nan, however, felt nothing but pride and satisfaction.
Later, the two carried several bags to their neighbor’s house, Auntie. These items were errands Qin Nan had helped with at Auntie’s request.
Auntie had taken care of Qin Nan during a difficult time, especially after his parents’ deaths, before his memories of his previous life resurfaced.
Standing outside her door, there was no need to knock. Qin Nan simply called out, “Auntie!”
After a brief response, the door opened to reveal a broad-shouldered, sturdy woman.
She glanced at Qin Nan and Shangguan Rouyue, noting their close proximity despite the difference in height. To a casual observer, they might appear as siblings, though Auntie had already heard the news of their marriage.
The gossip had spread through the village, thanks to Yang Xiaoqi. In Niujiao Village, a place so small that news traveled quickly, everyone soon knew about the couple’s union.
Initially, Auntie had been skeptical, sharing Yang Xiaoqi’s thoughts.
How could a woman as exceptional as Shangguan Rouyue, who came from the outside world, willingly settle in a remote village like this and marry one of its villagers?
When she first asked Qin Nan for help buying supplies, Auntie had even hinted at her doubts. However, Qin Nan had openly confirmed the marriage.
Still, Auntie didn’t believe him initially. When had Qin Nan started making wild claims?
For the sake of some vanity, he was casually telling lies. How could this be acceptable?
Didn’t he know that the most important thing in life is credibility?
It wasn’t until one night, when Auntie overheard strange noises coming from Qin Nan’s house that she finally believed him.
Well, well, Qin Nan sure has skills, landing such a beautiful wife.
Of course, she wasn’t eavesdropping or prying into other people’s privacy; she was just concerned about her neighbor!
“Auntie, here are the things you asked for. I’ve brought them all,” Qin Nan said.
“Thank you for the trouble,” Auntie replied.
“It’s no trouble at all. My wife helped, so it was easy,” Qin Nan said.
Auntie knew he wasn’t lying—after all, the villagers had grown accustomed to seeing Shangguan Rouyue carrying Qin Nan while flying across the skies.
This visit also served as a way for Qin Nan to announce his marriage to the neighbors formally.
“Such a pity, I was planning to marry my daughter to you, but you got a wife so quickly.”
“Auntie, you’re joking,” Qin Nan replied.
“I’m not joking. You’re handsome, you can heal people, and you’re young and capable. Many young girls in the village are quite fond of you,” Auntie said with a laugh.
Qin Nan brushed off the comment, handed over the items, and left with Shangguan Rouyue.
On their way back, Shangguan Rouyue suddenly asked, “Were you thinking of marrying Auntie’s daughter?”
“Dear, what nonsense are you imagining? Auntie’s daughter isn’t even ten yet,” Qin Nan said.
“Am I imagining things? Is it true that you’re quite popular among the village girls?” Shangguan Rouyue asked.
“My dear wife, have some confidence. You’re already the most beautiful village girl in Niujiao Village,” Qin Nan said.
“Who’s a village girl? Hmph,” Shangguan Rouyue retorted.
“But didn’t you say, ‘Marry a chicken, follow the chicken; marry a dog, follow the dog’? Since I’m a villager and you married me, what else could you be?” Qin Nan teased.
Shangguan Rouyue pouted, feigning displeasure at being called a “village girl,” though she didn’t exactly hate it.
…
Later that day, two villagers came to Qin Nan’s house. One of them was injured, supported by the other, and they sought Qin Nan’s help for treatment.
Following Qin Nan’s instructions, the injured villager removed his shirt, revealing a severe wound caused by a wild animal.
According to the story, the attack happened while hunting in the mountains, where they unexpectedly encountered a ferocious beast. Had they not fled quickly, it would have cost them their lives.
While Qin Nan treated the wound, the villager, still shaken, repeatedly advised him to avoid going into the mountains until someone dealt with the beast.
Despite his young age, Qin Nan was highly respected in the village. Known as the “little miracle doctor,” he had saved many lives with his affordable and effective treatments.
They would not underestimate him just because of his young age.
According to the injured villager’s description, the beast on the mountain was no ordinary animal. It resembled a wolf but was significantly larger, much faster, and had razor-sharp claws.
If Qin Nan’s guess was correct, it was likely a spirit beast.
The difference between spirit beasts and ordinary animals wasn’t just in size and strength. The most notable distinction was their aggressiveness.
Spirit beasts were ferocious by nature, driven by a love for slaughter, and displayed intense hostility toward any living being.
Encountering a spirit beast rarely led to anything good.
