Chapter 42: The Time of Molting
The "Divine Script" is a technique where nen is used to inscribe symbols or arrays, akin to magical seals or formations.
It is typically employed to enhance nen abilities, either through amplification or storage.
However, due to its complexity, steep learning curve, and the exhaustive preparation it requires, very few people dedicate themselves to mastering it.
Yet, for those who succeed, the Divine Script offers the potential to accomplish feats that would otherwise be impossible when combined with nen.
For instance, in the Hunter x Hunter series, the Greed Island game was brought to life through extensive use of Divine Scripts. These scripts expanded the limits of the abilities at play, enabling the creation of countless NPCs and objects with unique powers—all within the area governed by the Divine Scripts.
Without the use of Divine Scripts, even with eleven skilled nen users, creating a game of such scale and complexity would have been unthinkable, let alone maintaining it over time.
Thus, the existence of Greed Island stands as a testament to the immense value and utility of the Divine Script.
Yet, within the canon, the presence of Divine Scripts feels fleeting. Their usage rate is so low that they barely factor into the narrative.
This suggests two possibilities:
Few nen users are willing to invest the time to learn the Divine Script.Access to the knowledge of the Divine Script is severely restricted due to various educational or cultural barriers.
Moro wasn't trained in the Divine Script. However, thanks to his status as a transmigrator, he had a basic understanding of its nature and applications.
To him, the reason for the script's rarity lay partly in its inherent limitations, particularly regarding its range of influence.
Take this hypothetical scenario:
You painstakingly prepare a formation, expecting it to trap or injure your opponent. But what if your enemy simply avoids stepping into it?
In such cases, not only would your effort be wasted, but you'd also have to destroy your own Divine Script to reclaim the portion of your nen it consumes.
Since each stroke of a Divine Script siphons away part of your nen capacity, leaving the script unused is tantamount to handicapping yourself in battle.
Given such drawbacks, the Divine Script holds limited value in direct combat and is better suited to strategic scenarios.
For most nen users, the time and energy spent mastering the Divine Script are better directed toward improving advanced nen techniques.
At this moment, Moro was examining a faintly glowing Divine Script in the corner of the observation deck.
He hadn't expected to find such a thing here.
"Why is there a Divine Script in this spot?"
His first thought was that it must have been placed by one of two parties:
The unknown nen user targeting him.The adversary facing Kanzai.
As for why Kanzai himself was not a suspect...
In Moro's view, Kanzai wasn't skilled enough in intricate studies like math or literature. Furthermore, he was busy fulfilling a bodyguard mission, making him unlikely to have crafted such a script.
The other bodyguard accompanying Kanzai—a robust female warrior—wasn't entirely ruled out as a possibility, but the chances were slim.
Moro stared at the glowing Divine Script, his thoughts churning.
Given his earlier deductions, the idea of destroying this Divine Script occurred to him immediately.
He wasn't sure what consequences would follow its destruction, but he was confident it would disrupt his opponent's plans and work in his favor.
Elsewhere, in a space dyed a dull yellow, the battle between Kanzai and Muhr raged on.
This was "The Time of Molting," Muhr's counter-based conjuration ability.
Whenever Muhr took damage, his ability activated, dragging his opponent into a mirrored reality—a nen space mirroring the real world.
Here, any damage Muhr sustained was evenly distributed to his opponent.
The nen space lasted for a total of 60 seconds.
If the total damage Muhr had sustained prior to activating his ability was A, then he had 60 seconds to inflict an equal or greater amount of damage on his opponent.
If he succeeded, all injuries Muhr had suffered would be instantly healed when the nen space vanished.
If he failed, however, he would enter a forced 60-minute state of Zetsu (a state of complete nen suppression).
"Too bad. I only managed to ruin one of your arms," Muhr said, his tone tinged with disappointment.
Standing in the yellow-tinted space, Muhr stared at Kanzai, whose brows furrowed in concentration. A sly smile crept across Muhr's face as he shook his head.
"No, I shouldn't feel bad," he corrected himself, his smile widening. "To incapacitate one of your arms when you were already on guard… I'd say that's quite the achievement."
Kanzai shot a glance at Muhr's limp right arm but remained silent.
"Why don't you attack?" Muhr taunted, curling a finger in invitation.
"Your ability's activation condition… it's too simple," Kanzai replied, his voice cold and composed.
Pulled into the nen space, Kanzai had quickly deduced the ability's mechanics—damage sharing. He refrained from striking recklessly, prioritizing a calm evaluation of the situation despite concerns for his client.
"Oh?" Muhr's smirk widened, feigning intrigue.
"It's simple, sure. All you have to do is create a situation where I have no choice but to fight back. If I hadn't reacted earlier, you'd have barged into the room and forced me to defend anyway. The result would've been the same… unless—"
Kanzai's voice grew sharp, his eyes narrowing.
"Unless I already knew your tricks. The activation condition is simple, but the repercussions are harsh. Damage-sharing, a forced nen space… given nen's balance of vows and limitations, it's clear your ability has some severe restrictions. At most, this nen space lasts between 30 and 60 seconds. Beyond that…"
Muhr's expression faltered momentarily—an act.
Feigning surprise, Muhr clapped slowly with his uninjured hand.
"Impressive, Twelve Zodiacs. Your experience is something else," he said with a twisted grin.
Kanzai's assessment was spot on. In truth, "The Time of Molting" ceased to share damage as soon as the nen space formed.
However, this nen space, normally limited to 60 seconds, had been extended to 300 seconds through the use of seven pre-drawn Divine Scripts.
