Hunter x Hunter: War of the Anime Worlds

Chapter 160: Guarding (End)

Xiang Nan and his two companions hurried into the residential district.

At a glance they spotted Beishi, who was hiding among the crowd—but neither side acknowledged the other.

Beishi covertly gestured, pointing to three other "civilians" in front of him who were actually players as well.

Following the hint, Xiang Nan looked over without worrying about being noticed by the three intruders.

"We're examinees from the Hunter Association. Intelligence indicates the suspects have mixed in with the crowd here," Xiang Nan told one of the site officials bluntly.

"Ah?"

The official in charge of the scene was taken aback and immediately ordered his subordinates to separate the gathered residents.

Although the staff tried to keep their actions discreet, they could not fool the three players from Fairy Tail.

"Hmm… looks like we were tailed," the short‑haired middle‑aged captain of the Fairy Tail trio sighed.

He had felt "watched" for a while but had failed to locate the observer, chalking it up to nerves—until now.

He glared at the chubby man and the blonde woman beside him. "I told you two to be more careful. One kept stuffing his face the whole way, the other kept looking all around like she'd just come from the countryside—of course people would notice something!"

"So what now? Do we make a move?" the blonde pouted, clearly unhappy.

The civilians around them were being evacuated, leaving the three of them completely isolated.

"The objective is done. We didn't unlock the story line—pity—but since we've been exposed, there's no point forcing it," the captain said, glancing at the approaching trio of Xiang Nan, Orban, and Pigeon. These newcomers were obviously high‑level players native to the main world.

They had already sensed that elite Hunter players were sniping at them on the battlefield, meaning this world's player faction had prepared defenses for the placement match. The quick lifting of battlefield restrictions also suggested the Hunters were expelling or killing intruders with impressive efficiency—proof of their strength.

High‑level Hunters had had an eye on them for a while, yet the three Fairy Tail players had never triggered a fight.

"Forget it—these people are strong," the captain judged. A clash would mean injuries or deaths. The placement match hadn't yielded the expected profit, but clearing the instance alive was still decent. Time to quit while ahead.

Moments later Xiang Nan led Orban and Pigeon to stand before the trio. Beishi also drifted silently closer.

"Greetings, main‑world players," the short‑haired captain said with a mild smile.

"Planning to whip up a bit of chaos?" Xiang Nan asked calmly.

Ordinary citizens filled the area; with the trio's ability, they could easily take hostages. Yet Xiang Nan seemed unbothered. If he dared announce enemies in front of the officials, he clearly wasn't afraid of bloodshed. Even if people died, these three rats had to be driven off or killed.

"I don't think that's necessary," the captain chuckled hoarsely. "Yes, the three of us wanted to unlock a quest, but now that we've been caught, we can't proceed. So—what's your intention? Fight us, or let us leave?"

Two options lay before them: the aggressive path—battle; or the cautious—wait for the system to settle things and let the Fairy Tail players return to their own world.

Xiang Nan sized them up in silence. Beishi leaned in and whispered a few words.

Fairy Tail? Xiang Nan's eyes flickered. He'd heard of that anime but never watched it. Like Black Clover, though, it was a magic world.

"More magic…" Xiang Nan mused. Their magic skills and combat style would differ from Black Clover's. To gather intel he'd have to fight, but given magic's uncertainty, the setting, and other factors, he decided against it. A battle here would cause many deaths. He didn't care about casualties, yet their attitude mattered, and Hunter Association personnel were on the way. All reports on today's incident in Zaban City would land on the administrators' desks; he preferred to avoid complications.

The enemies, for their part, seemed "peaceful"—no burning desire to fight. Since negotiation was possible, extremism was pointless.

"You two keep searching the city; leave these three to Beishi and me," Xiang Nan ordered Orban and Pigeon.

"Got it."

The pair nodded and left at once.

"Huh?" The captain raised an eyebrow. The man before him let his teammates walk away, leaving just himself and Beishi to "watch" the three of them—either extremely confident or certain the main world's strongest reinforcements were about to arrive.

Well then…

"During the mission we saw two brazen guys flying through the sky—they looked more dangerous than us," the captain tried probing.

"They're dead," Xiang Nan replied flatly.

"…"

The captain's heart skipped. As expected…

"The basic quest is done," he sighed. "Rest assured, once the system finishes settlement, we'll leave."

He had entertained a few schemes, but news of the other intruders' deaths made him behave. The blonde woman and the fat man looked shocked and a touch unwilling, but the captain silenced them with a glance.

"Only rival intruders died by our hands—we never attacked main‑world players or NPCs," the captain added, making his stance clear. "May I ask which world those two dead mages came from?"

"Black Clover," Xiang Nan answered, sensing the goodwill.

"Ah, Black Clover."

Understanding dawned on the captain. As Fairy Tail players, they kept an eye on other magic‑themed worlds, gathering cross‑world intel.

"Seems you've figured us out—we're Fairy Tail players from the Phantom Lord guild," the captain introduced himself.

"Phantom Lord? The guild that fights Fairy Tail? Didn't it disband?" Beishi muttered, then clapped in surprise.

"Hey, watch your mouth!" the blonde snapped.

"That was the original plot," the captain laughed it off. "As players who know the story in advance, we can change things. By the way…" He extended his hand to Xiang Nan. "I'm Maas. Pleased to meet you—though getting caught is annoying, we'll accept it. The system's already calculating. Your Hunter players are impressive. Truth is, Fairy Tail seldom crosses paths with Hunters in the multiverse, and we don't rack up Sin Value against you, so the chance of invasion is low for quite a while. We're not really enemies and have no wish to feud. We've met now; hopefully we can keep things 'friendly' in future."

Xiang Nan looked at the offered hand. After a few seconds he shook it.

"You mean an alliance?"

"That's beyond me—I'm a bit player in the Fairy Tail faction. But we can put top guild members in touch with your Hunters to discuss cooperation, if the chance arises."

Maas smiled. "Time to go…" He released Xiang Nan's hand as he listened to the system prompts. "What's your name? We gathered some info along the way—lots of Hunter applicants in action. I know the Hunter Association; are you high‑ranking?"

"No."

"Call me Seventeen," Xiang Nan said coolly.

"Seventeen?" Maas could tell it wasn't his real name, but he didn't mind and nodded.

"Well then… until we meet again."

With that, the three before him dissolved into motes of white light and vanished.

The threat removed, Xiang Nan led Beishi away at once.
