Chapter 22: The Nen Battle - Part 1 - The Survey - Chapter 22
Five people stood around a circular table.
Their eyes moved, their minds calculating.
And at the center of them all, Nakis leaned forward with both hands braced on the table.
"It's done," he said firmly, his voice low but resonant.
"We have our fifth."
All eyes turned to the newcomer.
Ertis, no older than twenty-five, stood tall, arms crossed over a lean but muscular frame.
His dark hair was tied in a short knot, and his fists were still bruised from training.
His aura wasn't wild, but there was a quiet tension under his skin, like a tightly coiled spring.
"A fighter,"
Vagu commented as he stepped forward, his tone somewhere between approval and assessment.
"And a straightforward one, too."
"Enhancer," Ertis confirmed. "No tricks."
Nakis raised a brow.
"Your Hatsu?"
Ertis nodded, raising one hand slowly.
"Pain and Power."
He took a step forward and explained without theatrics.
"When I select one target, I can turn the pain they inflict on me into strength. Not just speed or defense. All physical stats. As long as I take damage from them, I grow stronger in response."
Alia's voice cut in.
"What are the conditions?"
"Two," Ertis answered.
"One: I must know their name. Two: I must see them with my own eyes and declare them as my target before the battle. That declaration locks me in; I can't select another target for two days after."
"A blood-forged counterplay,"
Vagu said with a slow smile.
"That might work well against Arkanis."
"If we get the drop on him," Mavel said from the corner.
Mavel also added looking at Ertis with some interest.
"I do not think that your ability would need conditions to activate."
"It is already a counteractive ability; why would it need more conditions and limitations?"
Ertis nodded.
"The counteractive nature of my ability combined with the target-locking limitation of one name as well as the 'see the target with my eyes' condition increases my power to a higher level."
"Because of these conditions, when it comes to one-on-one, I am really great."
Mavel said nothing and nodded.
He could understand the reasoning behind it.
It was just that he was not used to seeing Enhancer Nen users who are keen to place conditions and limitations on their abilities.
"And you've all fulfilled the conditions of Mavel?"
Nakis asked, stepping forward.
He looked at each of them.
"For his Marking Transit to work, he needs a deep truth. A secret no one else knows."
Mavel gestured to the others.
"They've all done it. Even Ertis. So we're linked now."
"Good." Nakis said, and Mavil added,
"When the time comes, I can transport the location of us with each other."
"I already marked all of you guys and know from instinct that my ability is active."
"Great, now let's start the final discussion."
Vagu said, pulling out a photograph and placing it on the table.
It was a grainy image of a tall man in a coat entering a modest hotel.
"The Three Blue Hotel," he said.
"That's the current lead. Quiet place on the edge of the old quarter. It's said Arkanis has checked in there multiple times the past week."
"The leads also show that he lives there with one or two friends."
Nakis furrowed his brow.
"That doesn't line up with his usual pattern. He moves often. He doesn't form bonds. Keeps no allies."
Alia crossed her arms.
"And now he has friends? That's either a lie or something's changed.
"The lead is from a valuable source."
Vagu added.
A long silence passed as they digested the information.
Each of them was a specialist in their own way, but their target, Arkanis, was known for one thing: killing other Nen users.
Nakis stood straight.
"Let's go over it one more time."
They all nodded.
He pointed at Mavel.
"You're the failsafe. We give you our truths, you mark us, and when you get the signal only from me, you teleport the whole team to the location."
Mavel nodded.
He turned to Alia.
"You will be our main fighter with Ertis; with your ability to take away the senses and Ertis's power and mastery over close combat, even he would be in danger."
Alia nodded.
"I will focus on taking his ability to 'see,' if possible."
Ertis smiled and commented.
"If my target and opponent can't see against me, it would be really great."
Alia nodded and smiled back.
"Good." Nakis looked to Vagu next.
"You're my blade. Fastest among us. I want you to wait for an assassination chance. Compared to others, your ability as a "Transmuter" will make things easier for you."
Vagu gave a short nod, licking his lower lip.
"With my transmuter ability, I can change my whole body to act like a knife; even if I punch a target or slap it, the target will get cut..."
Nakis nodded and then turned to Ertis.
"You're our hammer. The closer you get, the more dangerous you become. You're going to take the brunt of the assault. But only after you see him and declare."
"I want you to wait before Alia hits the target with her spear to take away the enemy's ability to 'see,' then it is on you."
"I know," Ertis said calmly.
"Don't jump in until I give the word. We'll weaken him first. If we can."
"I will be on the sidelines helping you guys to strangle him and make him stop and give him a hard time to move."
Nakis looked around the room one final time.
"The bounty is ten billion, Jenny," he said, voice lowering.
"Five goes to me and Vagu; five is yours. Split five ways."
Then Vagu spoke softly.
"Are we ready to kill a man like Arkanis?"
The question hung in the air.
No one answered.
Only smiles, the eyes that long for a great hunt.
