Chapter 14: Headhunting Plans - Two Potential Members - Chapter 14
Vagu then said to Nakis, changing the subject for a moment.
"You really shouldn't work with amateurs. You get what you pay for. And cheap gets you dead."
"I know," Nakis replied, walking over and sitting on the arm of a plush chair. "But you know how it is. Pros don't work with us."
"Because we don't pay them in advance," Vagu said.
"Also because the job's suicidal," Nakis added.
That drew a genuine laugh from Vagu.
"Yeah," he said, rubbing his chin. "Ten billion Jenny on Arkanis's head. That's not a bounty. That's bait."
The name settled into the room like smoke.
Arkanis.
A Nen user with a name whispered in fear by mercenaries and Hunters alike.
Few had seen him.
Rumors said he'd wiped out an entire Hunter squad of non-users with ease.
An A-Class Bounty, similar to the level of a Phantom Troupe member, maybe even higher due to the fact that he is a known combatant Nen user.
And someone somewhere had placed a reward of ten billion Jenny for his death or capture.
"Dangerous man," Vagu muttered.
"The most dangerous," Nakis agreed, sipping slowly now.
They sat in silence for a long moment.
The reality of facing someone like Arkanis in a true battle of Nen.
Against a man who is honed by war and hardened by consequence.
"We can't do this alone," Nakis finally said.
"No," Vagu agreed, rubbing his thumb across the hilt of his knife.
"We need four. At least. All Nen users. All with real talent."
Vagu reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small notepad.
"Two are potentials, as I said," he said. "One's an emitter like you; his ability gives us a great advantage in the combat scene. The other's a conjurer. She is able to conjure three types of weapons, a close-combat user like me,"
"We'll need to test them," Nakis replied, leaning forward.
"We will," Nakis said, draining the rest of his glass. "But even if they join, they won't be enough."
Vagu tilted his head. "You have someone else in mind?"
Nakis hesitated.
"There's a kid. I don't know much about him. Doesn't belong to any known group. New in the city. But two of the amateurs I recruited followed him, thinking he'd be an easy mark. I found their bodies in an alley."
Vagu frowned.
"You're saying he did that?"
Nakis nodded.
"Crushed their skulls. Just execution."
There was a pause.
Then Vagu smirked.
"Interesting. What type?"
"Don't know yet," Nakis said.
"Name?"
"Arin Walker."
Vagu stood, stretching again, then walked to the window. He pulled back the curtain and looked down at the city below.
"Arin Walker," he repeated.
He liked the sound of it.
"Let's keep an eye on him," Vagu said. "Killing two amateur gangsters with no nen is not nearly enough to consider taking him into our group."
Nakis nodded, pouring another drink.
"Tell me about the details of the two new potentials you are talking about."
Vagu nodded and started with the first one.
"Maver Nax, An emitter, as I said."
"Switchpoint Circle - Circle Of Secrets..."
"Emitter"
"Maver can instantly switch the physical locations of any two marked individuals within his range of ten km of diameter. The teleportation is instantaneous and undetectable by normal senses."
"The distance limit is ten km in each direction, including underground and the sky."
Nakis nodded and smiled.
"That is really a great ability, I have to say."
Vagu nodded again.
"Yeah, that's what I thought."
Nakis asked,.
"Such an ability would have conditions to activate; what is it?"
Vagu then started talking, telling more.
"There are some."
"Maver must physically touch each target with his right hand to mark them."
"A maximum of five individuals can be marked at one time," he said and then added.
"Every marked individual must be explicitly told about the ability."
"They must be aware of what might happen and verbally acknowledge it.
"All five marked individuals must meet and share a personal secret with one another."
"The secret must be unknown to anyone else except Maver."
"If even one person refuses, the ability cannot be activated."
Nakis let out a cold breath.
"Secrets..."
"I did not expect such a condition for such an ability."
Vagu shook his head and smiled.
"Beat me to it. I'm just your ordinary combatant; I have a practical ability, as you know."
Nakis nodded and laughed.
"Yeah, I know."
Vagu then added.
"One more thing."
"The ability allows a total of 30 switches between any pair among the five marked individuals."
"After 30 transfers, the marks vanish, and the process must be restarted."
Nakis then asked about the second one, the conjurer, the one who will be the close-combat member of their team.
Vagu shook his head and started writing on a piece of paper.
As he wrote, he said to Nakis that he was tired of talking and explaining. He can read it.
In one minute he finished writing and gave the paper to Nakis.
Name: Three Senses—Weapons of Senses
Type: Conjurer
User: Alia Neril
Effect:
Alia conjures a small red box named
Three Senses.
Upon activation, she chooses to seal one of her own senses—smell, hearing, or sight.
Based on the chosen sense, the box produces a corresponding weapon imbued with Nen. If the weapon strikes a target, the corresponding sense is also sealed for the target.
Weapon Manifestations:
Black Blade (loss of smell): A short, heavy steel blade.
Black Spear (loss of hearing): A long, narrow spear.
Black and White Scimitars (loss of sight): A pair of curved blades used together.
Conditions:
Alia must willingly suppress one of her own senses before summoning a weapon.
Only one weapon can be conjured at a time.
The weapon must land a clean hit on the target to trigger the effect.
The effect remains active only while Alia maintains the ability.
Limitations:
Alia suffers the same sensory loss as her target for the duration.
If Alia cancels the ability or is rendered unconscious, all effects end immediately.
Cannot affect more than one sense at a time; switching requires full cancellation and reactivation.
Nakis read about it and nodded.
"I am starting to understand our plan."
Vagu nodded.
"Each of these people is rare, even between new users. We need to be good to them."
Nakis laughed out loud.
"Hearing these words from you is weird, but I agree."
"Call them," he said, and Vagu nodded.
