Chapter 10: Ch: 08
Hello everyone, I'm Gon Freecss, the Nen Evangelist.
Gon and his group have successfully started their journey through the majority rule trials and completed several tutorials. Now, Gon begins to explain the basics of Nen.
"First, the name of this power that Hisoka and I use is called 'Nen.' In simple terms, it's a technique that harnesses the innate abilities of living beings to create supernatural phenomena."
Killua and the others focus intently, not wanting to miss a single word of the explanation, while Hisoka eagerly awaits what Gon will say next.
"Basically, Nen users are stronger than non-Nen users. Just being able to manipulate aura makes you stronger, but adding Nen abilities makes you even more powerful."
Confused by the unfamiliar terms "aura" and "Nen ability," the three friends need a more relatable example.
"Think of a faucet and a garden hose. The faucet and hose represent your body, and the water flowing through them is your aura. Right now, you three are like faucets left slightly open, letting the water flow freely without control. Hisoka and I have learned to attach a nozzle to the end of our hose, allowing us to control the flow of water however we want."
"Sorry, but you mentioned that handling aura and Nen abilities are different things. Can you explain that part?"
Kurapika, judging that the basic explanation was complete, asked the question that had been weighing on his mind. Gon, confirming that Leorio and Killua were following along, answered.
"Handling aura is like controlling the water flow in my previous example, grabbing the end of the hose to stop the flow or increase the pressure. Once you can do that, you can call yourself a Nen user. Nen abilities, on the other hand, are the pinnacle of a Nen user's skills, the power to manifest whatever abilities you desire."
Kurapika pondered this explanation for a moment, then Leorio raised another point that was bothering him.
"From what you said back on the rooftop, it sounds like some kind of dream power that can do anything, but that's impossible, right?"
"You're half right. Basically, you can create any ability you want. But whether you can actually use that ability depends entirely on the individual. Even if you attach a fire hose nozzle to a regular garden hose, it won't work properly if your water supply is just normal household pressure, right?"
"So if you could generate infinite aura, you could achieve any ability?"
"You'd also need a body that couldn't be destroyed. The hose would burst from the water pressure. The important thing is to create Nen abilities that match both the aura you can generate and the body you've trained."
Leorio nodded in understanding. When Gon looked over at Killua, who hadn't asked anything yet, Killua seemed to remember something and asked a question at just the right moment.
"So that's why the old man, the Chairman, was so incredibly tough yesterday? And Gon's strength is unbelievable too. Can you tell me which of the things you did yesterday were Nen abilities?"
"There were no Nen abilities in what Killua saw. It's like when water pressure increases, the force becomes stronger, and when pressure is applied, the hose becomes harder. Also, you shouldn't ask others about their Nen abilities unless you're really close to them. Some abilities are deadly to reveal to strangers, and others are powerful precisely because no one knows about them."
"Hmm, so will Gon tell us if we ask?"
Killua, still feeling a bit frustrated from yesterday's events, realized he was being somewhat petty, but he couldn't help asking Gon about Nen abilities. Kurapika and Leorio also seemed interested, glancing cautiously at Gon.
"Of course I'll tell you! But not yet. If you don't have a solid understanding of your own abilities first, it might negatively influence your development."
Gon answered immediately, addressing not just Killua but all three of them. The three friends, who had just been declared close enough to share such secrets, looked at each other, feeling a bit embarrassed but not entirely displeased.
"Then I'll definitely tell you once my ability is decided. If you could give me some advice, that would be really helpful."
"Teach me more too. I'm curious about what's possible and how it might apply to healing."
"Well, I've got a rough idea of how to catch up, so just wait and see."
Gon smiles broadly at his friends' responses, while Hisoka basks in the joy of watching the four interact.
"Won't you teach me too? ♥"
"I wouldn't want to teach you privately, even during a fight. You don't mind spoilers, do you, Hisoka?"
"That's a shame. I'm looking forward to it."
As more detailed explanations and questions were exchanged, the five of them proceeded smoothly toward the majority decision trials. There were no major obstacles or conflicts, and even Leorio and Killua began to lose their initial tension and concentration.
Before Gon's group, a bottomless pit appears with a ring positioned in its center. On the other side of the ring, six hooded figures stand waiting, and tension rises among the group as this is the first non-trap test they've encountered.
"Candidates will engage in one-on-one battles in the ring. If you lose more than once, you're disqualified. Even if you win, you'll lose the time spent on losing matches. The details of each battle will be explained by your opponent. That is all."
As soon as the examiner's announcement ended, one prisoner removed his hood and stepped forward to explain the rules of the test.
The content of each battle and how victory is determined are entirely up to each prisoner. Leorio protests that the rules heavily favor the prisoners, but his protest is rejected. Since they're told they'll fail if they don't decide on the first challenger, they have no choice but to comply. After a brief discussion, Hisoka decides to step into the ring to assess the situation.
Finally, the decisive moment of the Trick Tower majority vote has arrived, and the five consecutive battles that will consume so much time are about to begin.
To be honest, I didn't think that simply having Hisoka accompany us instead of Tonpa would make this journey so much easier. Thanks to him, I've mostly finished explaining the concept of "Nen" to Killua and the others, and we should be able to avoid any major delays, so this must be the proper route.
With Hisoka stepping onto the ring, one of the hooded men also steps forward, but it's not the one who explained the rules earlier. There are six of them, so the numbers don't match up, and I have no idea what's going on, but Hisoka won't lose, so let's just watch and see what happens.
The man who emerged after shedding his hood was not a prisoner but a rugged man with prominent scars covering his face. He raised his eyebrows and glared at Hisoka, then raised his voice and unleashed murderous intent toward him.
"I've been waiting for this moment, Hisoka! I became a demon just to get my revenge on you!"
"...Hmm... Sorry, I can't remember. Who are you?"
Hisoka, completely uninterested in the enraged man, stood in stark contrast to his opponent's fury. However, Hisoka wasn't letting his guard down, he had judged from the man's aura that he was also a Nen user with the ability to at least injure him.
"If you say you've forgotten, then I'll remind you! Ever since I lost to you in last year's exam, I haven't forgotten for a single moment! I've been living all this time just to kill you here today and settle our past!"
Hearing the man's agonized scream, Hisoka finally remembered his face and completely changed his attitude, becoming friendly.
"Oh, I remember now. You were the examiner from last year, weren't you? ♦ I've been meaning to thank you for that. ♥"
Confused by Hisoka's sudden familiarity, the man was taken aback, but Hisoka continued speaking rapidly.
"Thanks to you disqualifying me last year, I had a dream-like encounter this year. ♥ I think I had a negative image of you before the exam started, but now it's all positive. ♦ As a token of my gratitude, I'll grant you one wish."
Seeing Hisoka's overly cheerful demeanor, no longer viewing him as an enemy, the man's anger reached its peak. He wrapped himself in dark, cold killing intent and announced the rules.
"Don't mock me! The rules are a death match, a fight to the death until one of us stops breathing!"
"...I understand. I'll let you go first. Come at me whenever you're ready."
Having reached his limit with the man's constantly condescending attitude, he drew his two curved swords without waiting for any signal and hurled them with all his strength.
Hisoka easily dodged the curved swords, which were moving at incredible speed. The man swung his two remaining swords and closed in on Hisoka. The swords he had thrown earlier changed direction like boomerangs and targeted Hisoka from behind. The man attacked at the exact moment the thrown swords returned, confident in his victory against Hisoka, who remained standing almost motionless.
"Die, Hisoka! Perish under my ultimate technique, the Infinite Four-Sword Style!!"
Only Gon and Killua were able to see what happened next, and they barely managed to discern what had occurred.
Just before the four curved swords could strike, Hisoka flashed the playing cards he had pinched between his fingers. With that single motion, the two curved swords approaching from behind, the two curved swords held by the man, and the man's neck were all severed in one clean stroke.
The severed curved swords and the man's head rolled lifelessly across the ring, while the headless body continued moving forward for a few more steps before collapsing onto the ring as well. The man's head, frozen in an expression of dark satisfaction at having killed Hisoka, showed no sign that he realized he was dead.
"I really did appreciate you. ♦ So as a thank-you, I killed you in one swift blow. ♠ Sleep well in that convenient dream from which you'll never wake. ♣"
After glancing at the man's expression, Hisoka turned away, and the man's memory was completely erased from Hisoka's mind.
Hisoka had no interest in broken toys; what interested him were promising young fruits and toys worth playing with.
While the other three stood speechless at Hisoka's unexpected display of power, Gon, who had recognized the high level of the battle that had just occurred, clapped his hands to greet Hisoka.
Aware of the bond between them, Hisoka, unusually for him, smiled naturally and high-fived Gon.
