Chapter 17: Hunter x Exam 7
"For this hunter exam. You will have to follow me; that is the only rule. If you drop halfway or you can't keep up. You will be out of the hunter exam."
"The exam starts... Now," Satotz announced before he turned Arodun and distorted walking into the tunnel.
Satotz said with his flingy moustache. Breck and Shizuku walked forward as Satotz started walking towards the tunnel. Hisoka and the others followed as well.
The test was not actually that difficult. You only had to walk for the start, and then you had to jog and then run to keep up with Satotz. And all this for 80 km.
If you ahd some training before coming to take the hunter exams, then you might be able to finish the test. But if you didn't and just came thinking it's easy, you will 100% fail this.
Soon, Satotz started to raise the speed from walking to speed walking. Some people complained about this, but they did not give up. Instead, they started sweating.
After increasing his walking speed significantly, Satotz paused before escalating his pace further into a slow jog.
After the jogging began, the number of participants started to dwindle, as many lacked the stamina to keep up with Satotz. This trend continued until the end of the test.
By the conclusion, most of the candidates had fallen behind and were unable to complete the test. Only Shizuku, Breck, Hisoka, and a few others managed to reach the end.
Satotz came to a stop as they reached the front of a forest. He turned around and waited for everyone to catch their breath before continuing to the second phase.
"This is the second phase of the test, and all you have to do is walk through this fog to the end," Satotz said, and the remaining candidates released a sigh of relief.
"But beware, this forest contains men-eating monsters and animals that will attack you if you are not careful. Continuing further is your own will, and will not be stopped," Satotz explained in a calm tone.
"Hey, Shizu. How about having some fun?" Breck asked Shizuku while eating a sweet treat they had brought from the city restaurant. Shizuku looked at him in confusion.
"Let's go and kill some of those man-eating beasts. I want to kill them like the animals they are~," Breck said, and Shizuku nodded her head as she took the end of Breck's sweet and bit down on it.
"Hey! That's mine, get your own!" Breck said with a glare as he took it from Shizuku. Shizuku pouted before summoning Blinky and taking a strip of another sweet.
Hisoka chuckled as he observed their actions. Soon, Satotz began the second phase and walked into the forest, the fog enveloping him. Everyone followed, except for three individuals.
The three of them chose different paths. Shizuku and Breck ended up finding some animals and killing them to relieve their boredom. Hisoka did the same, but his motivation was driven by his desire to hold back from fighting and killing Shizuku.
Boom!
A massive shockwave was released as Breck slammed his fist into the chest of an animal, sending it flying in a straight line like a rocket, dividing the fog.
Shizuku did the same, hitting an animal on the head with Blinky, cracking their skulls and slamming them into the ground, raising a dust cloud from the fierce impact.
In the direct opposite direction from Shizuku and Breck. A chain of screams that could send shivers down anyone's spine could be heard. Their lives were cut short by playing cards.
"Hee~" Hisoka grinned, his eyes low and his face numb. Blood dripped from his chin, his playing card dripping with blood onto the floor. Around him were corpses, all cut throat.
A chill emanated from Hisoka as he felt the battle going on in the opposite direction. The explosion sound of flesh hitting flesh, the sound of bones breaking.
The sounds of his prey not being a weakling, but an almost ripe fruit. Hisoka felt his body shake as he moved forward, barely stopping himself from going and killing them.
He doesn't need to sense the aura of Breck to know that he was actually strong. The reason he was shaking so much was because of Breck in the first place.
Someone being able to hide their nen so skillfully is not to be underestimated. Hisoka discovered Breck's talent from the moment he set his eyes on him.
From instinctively learning how to stand better on the shaking boat, to instinctively hiding his reactions better from Hisoka. That was all done without intention, but by instinct.
"Such a rare apple... I can't end it right now, or I will regret it for my whole life~," Hisopka muttered, reaching the ends of the swampy marsh and reaching Satotz.
Back in the fog, Breck and Shizuku stopped what they were doing as they felt Hisoka and his bloodlust leave the foggy area. They were not stupid and knew that Hisoka would not care about being disqualified.
That madman could attack them anytime he felt like it. There is nothing to hold him back from trying to fight them.
"It seems his bloodlust was checked and he held himself back..." Breck muttered as he remembered everything about Hisoka up to the succession arc.
Hisoka would not kill him straight away if he showed talent. And it seems his gamble was right, as he showed enough talent for him to not go straight for the fight.
Of course, Breck could not fake something like talent, and did learn everything from staying upright on the ship to knowing when it rains in a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes.
"Can we go? Or should we wait some more?" Shizuku asked as she put away her Blinky. Breck nodded, and the two vanished from the place, only to appear outside the fog the next second.
Breck let out a comfortable sigh as he adjusted his red tie, his jacket sporting some stains over here and there. Shizuku, seeing this, took out Blinky and cleaned it with a swipe.
"Your Blinky is useful, almost a lifesaver," Breck praised as he tickled the underside of Blinky's mouth. The vacuum trembled until Breck took his hand away.
After the two emerged, they waited a few minutes, but no one else appeared from the fog. Only the three aura users and a couple of regular participants in the hunter exam remained.
Satotz acted quickly and without hesitation as he took everyone to the second phase of the exam. They arrived at Visca Forest Preserve and stood in front of a gate as Satotz left them there.
"Well, I guess we wait," Breck said with a frown. He held himself back from crashing out as he waited. Why was this hunter exam taking so long? Just give him a fight and pass him if he wins.
Easy!
