Chapter 32: Arendale lll
Elsa Pov
My heart hammered as I heard the explosion from my ice palace. Panic gripped me. I rushed towards the sound. In the crater stood a man radiating raw power. He was imposing, with an intense gaze.
"Who are you?" I asked, trembling.
"I am Erik... And you must be Elsa," he stated.
He asked if I could fight. My magic was a curse, not a weapon. "No, I cannot fight," I admitted, confused.
Then he spoke of conquering Arendelle, but wanting me. My "immense magic," becoming his "greatest general," conquering the world. My mind reeled.
"I refuse," I said, trying to be firm. "I do not like violence. Please leave."
But he wouldn't. He called me a "variable," a "danger." He spoke of the eternal winter, my winter. "I-impossible!" I stammered, denying it. He gave me a choice: join him, or die.
"Leave!" I screamed, my magic lashing out. Ice spears shattered against him, turning to steam. He was immune. He was... impossible.
Then, with blinding speed, he was in front of me. He grabbed my wrist, and a jolt of pure amazement shot through me. My magic, usually volatile with touch, didn't flare. Spikes broke against his skin. His touch seemed to absorb my fear, to ground me. My eyes widened. "T-this... how?"
A strange thought emerged. He could withstand my power. He wasn't afraid. He understood strength. And the thought of that endless winter, his words about my people freezing, finally broke through my resolve.
"I-I will join you," I whispered. He released me. Just then, Anna burst in.
"Anna?" I breathed, relief and dread warring.
"Elsa!" she cried. "The kingdom needs you!"
Then he spoke. "I am the new king and ruler of Arendelle, and I command you to return with me, Queen Elsa."
Anna's face was shocked. "Y-you... married?" she gasped, pointing at me.
"No! I never married! He took over Arendelle, didn't you know?" I explained.
Her outburst about how fast it happened was typical Anna. He silenced her with a single word. He then talked about "problems."
"What problems?" Anna asked.
He pointed at me, then spoke of "corrupt nobles" and "an unknown prince" to be "executed."
"E-execution?" Anna quivered.
"Yes. Have you ever seen someone die?" he asked her.
"I-I no," she muttered.
An assassin materialized, reported, "All the corrupt nobles have been rounded up, my lord, and we've found numerous illegal and disgusting acts committed by them." He nodded, and she vanished.
The air grew heavy. "Illegal and disgusting acts," he repeated. "These are deep-seated infections that threaten Arendelle. Your kingdom was being eaten from the inside out, while its royal family remained oblivious."
He stepped closer to Anna. "The prince you welcomed, Hans, was orchestrating a coup. He arrived with an agenda, not affection. His intent was to exploit your kingdom's vulnerability, to seize power while you and your sister were distracted by this… self-imposed winter."
Anna gasped, looking stunned. "Hans? No, that's... impossible! He was helping us!"
"He was helping himself," Erik corrected. "My assassins have uncovered evidence of his conniving. He's a snake in your garden, Princess, and he's not the only one."
My eyes were fixed on him now, a chilling realization dawning. My fear was still there, but mixed with understanding of what I had truly caused and overlooked. The corruption was vast.
"My actions, while harsh, are a swift and necessary surgery," he continued to Anna. "I remove the rot, stabilize the patient, and then rebuild stronger. Arendelle will emerge better. All threats must be neutralized."
He gave them a moment.
"You and your companions will return to the city," he commanded. "Inform the populace of the new order. Your sister, Queen Elsa, will return with me. She has a crucial role to play. Do not interfere. Your cooperation will ensure a smoother transition. Any resistance will only prolong the inevitable."
Anna's face was a mixture of shock and terror, her protest dying. The man next to Anna, Kristoff, who introduced himself during the flight, seemed stunned too. This wasn't just a takeover; it was a complete, ruthless overhaul. And I, Elsa, was now a piece in his terrifying game.
After the talk, he transformed and grabbed us. The flight to Arendelle took a few hours. Anna talked non-stop, but I was too overwhelmed to speak. I saw Kristoff with Anna, the snowman, and the reindeer.
As we neared Arendelle, I noticed the ice and snow storm was gone. My winter was receding. Relief, and guilt, washed over me. Perhaps he was right.
We landed, and the city gates opened. Two men and a woman, his commanders I assumed, greeted him. He nodded as one, a burly man, reported that all corrupt nobles were in the square.
My stomach clenched as we moved through the hushed streets. He announced, "All corrupt nobles and criminals in this square will be executed!" A gasp rippled through the crowd. My hands clenched. I watched, horrified, as they were executed.
Then, Hans. My blood ran cold. He screamed about being a prince, threatening war. Erik ignored him. One of his soldiers, who seemed a little crazy, simply cut off Hans's head. Anna cried out, and I put a hand on her arm. The square fell silent.
In the days that followed, the executions continued. His assassins found the remaining corrupt. Arendelle was cleansed, brutally.
He then focused on the people. Due to the winter, food was scarce. I didn't know what he would do, but then, a huge dragon, unlike anything I'd ever imagined, emerged from the waters. I was utterly shocked and filled with amazement. It was colossal, majestic, a creature of pure myth. As it moved, I sensed a strange familiarity, a resonance with its immense power. He called it the Bewilderbeast.
He commanded the beast to dive into the water and "fish." After a minute or two, it resurfaced, then submerged again, causing a colossal explosion of water that sent thousands of fish raining onto the docks. It was such an odd, yet incredibly effective, way of providing food.
I noticed something peculiar. I was drawn to the massive dragon, and to my surprise, it seemed equally interested in me. It was an unexpected connection, profound and wordless. He noticed, and decided we would be a team. Anna, of course, immediately wanted a dragon of her own, but he ignored her.
That night, a strange impulse led me to his study. He was deep in paperwork. I knocked softly and entered.
"Sir Erik," I began, "I... I have many questions. About your ambitions. About what you plan."
"Ask away, Queen Elsa," he replied. "I have no secrets about my intentions."
We talked for hours. I asked about his past, his reasons for conquest. He spoke of a fragmented world, and his ambition to forge a unified empire. "To bring true order and prosperity."
"But at what cost?" I pressed, thinking of the executions. "Must it always be through force?"
"Conflict is inevitable," he stated. "Corruption, like a disease, must be surgically removed. The cost of inaction is far greater." He spoke of his fiancée, Merida, and his goal to revive her. He spoke of strength, of how individuals like me could flourish in his empire.
"So, your dream," I summarized, "is to create an unbreakable empire, guided by your will, where order reigns supreme, and you are... its absolute core."
"Precisely," he affirmed, a faint smile.
The conversation was intense, leaving me with fear and a grudging understanding. His vision was brutal, but logical. A part of me, however small, felt a strange pull toward his unwavering conviction, a quiet admiration beginning to stir beneath my fear.
Days later, I saw him walking through the castle. He looked entirely different. Gone were the rugged leathers. He wore a sumptuous, deep-hued robe, heavy with gold. A grand, flowing cape billowed. He exuded immense wealth and power. It was... unexpected, and undeniably striking. I found myself thinking how well it suited him, how it enhanced his imposing presence rather than diminishing it. A dangerous thought, perhaps, but one that lingered.
"Sir Erik," I said, surprised. "You... you look truly magnificent. It suits you."
He gave a curt nod. "Thank you. Now, follow me. We still have your magic to discuss."
He led me to an open courtyard. The cold still lingered, a reminder of my failures. "Your magic is immense, Queen Elsa, but untamed," he began, his voice firm. "It is a force that needs discipline, not fear. You've allowed it to rule you, to isolate you. That ends now."
My usual defensiveness flared. "I've tried, for years. Every time, it only grows worse."
"Because you've approached it with trepidation, not command," he countered. "Fear is a weakness. Your power is a tool. You must master it, not merely contain it."
He extended his hand, and a small, controlled flicker of fire danced in his palm. It was so opposite to my ice. "You saw what my power can do. It bends to my will. Yours can do the same. Show me what you can do without the fear."
He was right. Fear had always been my prison. I took a deep breath, focusing, trying to push away the years of terror. A shimmering frost formed around my hands, erratic at first, but then, under his unwavering gaze, it began to coalesce. Intricate patterns, tiny snowflakes. I felt a surge of control I hadn't felt in years.
"Good," he stated, a rare note of approval. "Now, push it further. Shape it. Control its intensity. Imagine it not as a curse, but as a part of you, a boundless source of strength."
His words echoed in my mind, challenging everything I'd ever believed. My magic, a monster I'd contained for years, was suddenly… strength.
"Your first exercise," he stated, his voice cutting through my thoughts, "will be to replicate that." He pointed to a small, intricate ice sculpture I had unconsciously formed, barely larger than my hand, a delicate snowflake within a sphere. "Not just once. I want you to fill this courtyard with a hundred of them. Each one identical. Each one perfect."
My eyes widened. A hundred? Identical? It felt impossible. My magic was chaotic, reactive. Precision had always been its enemy.
"And," he continued, watching my reaction, "you will do it without the slightest tremor of fear. If I sense hesitation, if your form wavers, we start again. Understand?"
I gulped. My heart began to pound, not with the familiar terror of losing control, but with a new, daunting challenge. This wasn't about hiding. This was about absolute mastery. He wasn't asking me to suppress my power; he was demanding I wield it with unflinching command. It was terrifying, yes, but also… exhilarating. The more I focused on his words, the more the fear began to recede, replaced by a strange, budding determination. I took a deep breath, focusing on the small, perfect sculpture. This wouldn't be like building an entire ice palace in a frenzy of panic. This would be a test of pure, disciplined will. A test I suddenly, desperately, wanted to pass for him.
After hours of intense training, I was exhausted. He simply nodded, a silent acknowledgment that still felt like a great accomplishment.
We headed to eat. Erik tasted the food and frowned. "This food lacks taste and nutritional value," he stated. I expected him to punish the cook, but instead, he stood and went to the kitchen. Curious, I followed.
Inside, he rolled up his sleeves and began to cook himself. My eyes widened in amazement. He moved with practiced ease, chopping and stirring. Within an hour, the kitchen filled with incredible, divine aromas.
"Are you... cooking?" I finally managed to ask, my voice laced with surprise.
He glanced at me, a hint of something unreadable in his eyes. "Someone has to ensure proper sustenance. The local fare is... insufficient."
We ate right there in the kitchen. The food was astonishingly delicious, the best I'd ever tasted. I felt a pure pleasure, as if I had ascended. I looked at him with new wonder. He even knew how to cook, and beautifully. This unexpected side of him, this hidden domesticity, deepened the strange pull I felt.
"This is... incredible," I said, a soft gasp escaping me. "I've never tasted anything like it."
He simply grunted, continuing to eat with efficient movements, but I noticed a subtle shift in his demeanor, a slight relaxation around his eyes.
