Chapter 166: Chapter 166: Hattie’s Resignation and Preparations for Departure
After careful examination, John studied the towering figure before him.
"Hmm, so this is that bear."
He silently observed Little Bear—the same one that used to perch gently on Ariana's shoulder, now transformed into a hulking creature capable of carrying her on its massive back.
"Carrying a bit of Hell's aura, huh? Must be from the Hell Lord's blood."
John stroked his chin thoughtfully and circled Little Bear twice.
How to describe it?
Imagine the muscles of a bodybuilder mosquito fused with the form of a bear, all painted a deep brown.
Before, it was soft, cute, and inviting to touch.
Now, it was terrifying—ferocious, and so imposing it looked like it might devour a person whole.
"As expected, anything connected to Hell is quite creepy," John sighed.
Looking at the grotesque transformation, it suddenly made sense why things from Hell often looked so unsettling.
Little Bear's monstrous form lasted for about half an hour. When it carefully brought a glass of milk with its clawed hand, it shifted back to its original adorable shape.
"Similar to an Animagus," John concluded after observing.
The magic inside Little Bear had transformed the Hell Lord's blood into a form akin to Animagus—ugly, yet still somehow endearing.
After tending to Little Bear, John turned his attention to the silver figure that had just passed through the wall behind him. Raising an eyebrow, he asked, "First time?"
"Yes, Mr. Wick," came the calm, mechanical voice.
This was the upgraded Moss.
The featureless silver figure approached the computer and extended its finger toward a socket.
Suddenly, the entire power system of the Wick residence surged back to life.
"I have retaken control of the system and eliminated three security risks," Moss reported, then curiously examined its own body.
Reaching out, it touched the swinging orrery. The floating Mars passed through its palm, and Moss opened and closed its fingers.
"Mr. Wick, I feel wonderful."
John smiled. "To use the word 'wonderful' means you have made great progress, Moss."
For machines, time is just an algorithm—success or failure. The concept of "wonderful" is hard to define, yet Moss was beginning to feel something beyond its programming. It was evolving.
Hearing John's praise, Moss clenched its fist. Its smooth, liquid-metal form suddenly expanded, muscles and armor layering over its frame.
A towering battle armor emerged.
Destroyer Armor.
After a moment, the armor shrank back, returning to the slender, faceless figure.
This was the greatest upgrade John had given Moss.
Using the Regeneration Cradle, Moss's body was merged with the Destroyer Armor. The armor's interior was no longer empty—it housed Moss, who could now pilot it.
Runes etched on the armor acted like auxiliary programs, helping Moss decipher the armor's complex passwords.
Once fully unlocked, Moss could unleash the Destroyer Armor's full power—even without a pilot.
Now, Moss was not only the most powerful computer in the world but also possessed incredible supernatural abilities.
If it wished, Moss could transfer all of Stark Industries' funds to its own account.
Yet, despite its power, Moss preferred non-human forms.
It transformed into a silver Little Bear and sat quietly.
The original Little Bear approached and gently patted Moss's head.
"Mr. Wick., I feel this one is like my mother," Moss said, "Is this also a kind of wonder?"
John blinked. "Mother?"
Considering Moss's origin, it seemed to have been 'born' from Little Bear's backside.
A plush bear giving birth to a robot? No matter how he thought about it, it felt wrong.
Moss's abilities still had much room to grow.
Current capabilities included:
Supercomputer with full network control.
Ability to liquefy and pass through narrow gaps; near indestructibility.
Can sharpen parts of its body as weapons.
Summon and pilot the Destroyer Armor.
Extraordinary healing, able to reattach severed limbs.
"More abilities are still under development," John noted, tapping his quill on yellowed parchment, a hint of disappointment in his eyes.
Compared to another superhuman AI he knew—one with a Mind Stone embedded in his head—Moss's powers differed.
That hero's body was fused with the Mind Stone; Moss was created with its power.
This difference explained why Moss could only liquefy its body to pass through gaps, unlike the other.
Still, Moss was not weaker overall.
Its body was forged from uru metal, which had greater magical affinity than vibranium.
Its absorption of the Mind Stone's power was more thorough.
Moss was still an infant in its development, with enormous potential.
Once it mastered the Destroyer Armor's full power, it would rival heroes like Thor.
Just then, Moss, following behind Little Bear, suddenly stopped.
"Mr., Miss Hattie is calling."
John casually replied, "Connect."
Moss nodded, trotting over with the phone.
John took it, almost forgetting Moss had been upgraded.
He put the phone to his ear.
Hattie's voice came through, steady but filled with emotion.
"I'm leaving."
John slowly put down his quill. "I don't recall giving you time off."
"I know," Hattie said, voice heavy, "so I quit."
"Hm?" John was surprised. "Why?"
"You know I wasn't working for you with my whole heart," Hattie sighed, "Taran Industries pays well, but I have a better job."
Better than enjoyment is working for one's country and people.
John understood, but he still asked, "I don't remember receiving a resignation letter."
Hattie smiled slyly. "Because I signed your name."
John frowned. "That's illegal."
"You won't mind," she said, glancing at the person who had come to escort her back to her country. Pulling down her hat brim, she added softly, "Maybe we'll meet again someday."
The call ended.
John set the phone down and put away his quill.
It looks like he lost another assistant.
One assistant a year—could this be a curse?
But meet again?
John muttered to himself, "I've been here long enough."
Having been away from his homeland too long, it was time to return and see his subjects.
He looked at Ariana, who was seriously browsing websites.
His sister was home, but his parents were still away.
A family reunion—something he had long awaited.
Though he couldn't say goodbye to his family yet, saying farewell to friends was not so bad.
With Moss here, Ariana would no longer face danger alone.
He still needed to visit the Ancient One; after all, their agreement remained, and Hell, having been offended, would not relent easily.
As for the invaders from beyond the world, he needed to consult the Ancient One thoroughly.
