Chapter 47: 《HP: Too Late, System!》Chapter 47: The Whisper-to-Ear Charm
No sooner had the seventh-years left than the door to Douglas's office swung open once more.
This time, it was George, Fred, Ron, and Harry.
"Professor, we're here for dictation practice!"
Without even setting down his teacup, Douglas gave a casual wave of his left hand. Four elegant notebooks and matching, finely-crafted quills appeared on the desk.
"George and Fred, carry on from where you left off yesterday. Harry and Ron, those blank notebooks are for you. The quills are enchanted—any mistakes will be automatically marked, so don't worry about it."
The four boys thanked him and hurried to their seats.
After sitting down, George and Fred made a show of adjusting the ink bottle on the table. Once George confirmed he could just see Douglas's reflection in the glass, he winked at Fred.
Harry and Ron exchanged puzzled glances, but their confusion didn't last long. Soon, they noticed words beginning to appear on George and Fred's shirt cuffs.
Ron mouthed in astonishment to Harry: "Cheat-sheet sleeves!"
Harry risked a glance at Douglas, who was calmly sipping tea and reading a parchment, seemingly oblivious.
George and Fred clearly caught the boys' furtive stares. Well-prepared, they each winked at Harry and Ron in turn, mouthing:
"Two Dungbombs—keep quiet!"
Harry thought about it, then kept his mouth shut. He wasn't after Dungbombs, but he certainly didn't want to become the class snitch. He simply pretended not to notice and bent over his own dictation.
Ron, a bit more enterprising, mouthed back:
"Lend it to me next time, or I'll tell Mum!"
George and Fred exchanged a look of mock despair and nodded in silent agreement.
Ten minutes later, Harry flexed his aching hand and glanced up to see Ron staring at his notebook, looking utterly defeated.
Had he peeked at Ron's notebook, he'd have seen it plastered with error marks. Not that Harry's own was much better—but he remembered what Hermione had told him: If you can't recall something, just skip it for now. Once you've written it once, you'll memorize it much faster when you come back.
At that moment, Fred elbowed George, then stood up with a sigh and brought his partially finished dictation to Douglas.
"Professor, I've written part of it—could you check it?"
Douglas didn't even look up.
"Not enough. Keep going."
Fred trudged back to his seat, exchanged a wink with George, and the two resumed their covert operations.
Harry and Ron still didn't quite get what the twins were up to. But since they'd seen the twins come for dictation before, Ron decided to try his luck as well. He picked up his error-riddled notebook and approached Douglas.
"Professor, I've written part of it—could you take a look?"
Douglas glanced at the notebook, then at Ron, and with a sigh, pulled out The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection and handed it over.
"Don't bother with dictation for now—you're just wasting ink. Honestly, I don't know how tolerant Miss Granger must be with you. Take the textbook and memorize the passage first."
Ignoring Ron's reddening face, Douglas turned to the fidgety Harry.
"Mr. Potter, you too. Bring me your notebook."
Harry hurried over, embarrassed, and handed it to Douglas. He badly wanted to explain that reciting and writing from memory were two entirely different beasts.
Douglas scanned the notebook and sighed.
"You'd better stop as well. Join Ron and memorize the material first."
From the twins' corner came two barely-suppressed snorts of laughter.
Ron exploded,
"George! Fred! Do you want me to—"
The twins instantly put on their most innocent faces.
Douglas addressed Ron and Harry:
"Once you've memorized it, come back for fresh notebooks and start again."
To the boys' astonishment, their written work vanished from the page before their eyes.
Then, with a subtle flick, Douglas cast a discreet Muffling Charm on himself, George, and Fred.
Almost immediately, the twins realized their world had gone utterly silent. They turned to see Ron and Harry mouthing words as they read, but not a sound reached their ears.
The twins exchanged a look, and Fred called out—much louder than necessary:
"George! Why can't I hear anything?"
George read his lips and replied,
"I can't hear anything either!"
Their raised voices drew curious looks from Harry and Ron. Why were the twins suddenly shouting?
They glanced at Douglas, who seemed to notice nothing at all.
Next, George and Fred began experimenting—tapping the desk, knocking over objects—delighting in the rare sensation of total silence.
George couldn't help but exclaim,
"A silent world—what bliss!"
Though Fred couldn't hear his brother, he replied with perfect timing,
"If only we could use this spell at home, we wouldn't have to listen to Mum's nagging!"
Suddenly, a voice thundered in their minds, echoing right beside their ears:
"Oh really? I've got a Silencing Hex as well—fancy trying it next? I could make you the first ever pair of deaf-mute twins!"
The voice was so sudden and so loud it left their heads ringing. It didn't take long to realize it was Douglas's voice—but when they looked, he wasn't even facing them.
Harry and Ron were just as baffled. They'd been enjoying the twins' antics when, out of nowhere, George and Fred clutched their heads and began trembling as if struck by a curse.
Before they could speak up, Douglas said, without looking up,
"Don't mind them—just focus on your memorization."
That voice really had come from Douglas, but it was all thanks to a spell of his own invention.
Douglas called it the Whisper-to-Ear Charm.
When paired with the Muffling Charm, it produced precisely the effect the Weasley twins had just experienced.
Back in his traveling days, Douglas had once knocked out seven Dark wizards at once using this very technique.
