Chapter 269: # Chapter 269: Points Added and Deducted
When Jane Yu returned to the Slytherin common room with the LeMays' two-way mirror in her arms, she was immediately surrounded by her fellow Slytherins.
They had already noticed the rapidly declining gem hourglass and collectively wore expressions of pain.
"One detention, and she deducted 150 points from you?!" Draco Malfoy exclaimed, his mouth agape in shock. "I know it's because of Dumbledore, but this score... Is she trying to destroy Slytherin?"
He seemed ready to continue cursing Umbridge for her treachery, but his voice was cut off by Daphne Greengrass.
"She's blatantly targeting us!" Daphne said angrily. "She's deliberately deducting points from Yu to divide us Slytherins!"
Seventh-years Warrington and Montague also joined in. Warrington leaned casually on his broomstick, his biceps visibly bulkier from training.
"Yu, you're incredible," he said, giving her a thumbs-up, but then awkwardly turned it into a thumbs-down. "Uh... I mean, how could you disrespect our sweet and approachable Professor Umbridge? Look at our house points—they've plummeted so much in one go."
Montague nudged him with an elbow, grinning as he joined the conversation. He flexed his large muscles for emphasis.
"What's there to worry about? Our muscles and quick wits will earn back those 150 points in no time. Of course, this isn't just a job for us."
His eyes darted around and landed on Draco.
"Draco, as a prefect, shouldn't you exercise your authority?"
Draco immediately caught on, his eyes widening before he coughed twice, straightened his tie, and scanned the common room.
"Let me see—Malcolm Baddock, for helping classmates and being kind, I'll award you 10 points; Mafalda Prewett, for excellent class performance and good attitude, 10 points for you... Blaise Zabini, your tie is impeccably tied, I'll give you another 5 points... Daphne Greengrass, for sitting upright, 5 points for you as well..."
By the time every Slytherin in the room had been awarded points, Draco stopped with a smug expression.
"Mission accomplished!" Montague declared cheerfully. As the new Quidditch captain with a functioning brain, even his thick body hair seemed to stand on end with excitement. "Alright, Yu, don't overthink it! Go ahead and deduct points as you please! There's no harm in going all out!"
Jane Yu felt her jaw drop.
She had clearly cost Slytherin 150 points—an earth-shattering amount.
Yet their reactions... weren't the sighs and complaints she had imagined?
And Warrington and Montague—who knew their intelligence had been entirely channeled into exploiting loopholes?
It left her in awe.
This camaraderie among the Slytherins made her feel a twinge of guilt for her "all-out" point deduction.
She could only hope that when Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry eventually turned into Hogwarts High School...
Her adorable classmates would still be able to laugh.
...
Unfortunately, the bad news she received from the LeMays through the two-way mirror made her lose her smile first.
"We've been researching for a year," Nicolas said, frowning as he fiddled with the magical circuits inlaid with silver threads under his hands. "We've managed to combine the two-way mirror with a gaming device for one-on-one communication. But as for what you described—instant communication among multiple users, an application where everyone can type, store knowledge, and share thoughts? We're at a loss for now."
He waved the design sketch and functionality list Jane had drawn for him.
"Your ideas are indeed genius. A color screen, lifelike moving images, touch screen, adjustable brightness and volume—those are simple functions, just a few minor spells can achieve them... But to connect so many users together, the magical circuits for that are incredibly difficult to design. I've melted down several tons of silver multiple times."
Jane sighed. All she wanted was a smartphone—
To watch dramas, read novels, play games, and live a carefree life.
But creating something so ahead of its time was proving to be incredibly challenging.
Still, problems exist to be solved.
"I really wish I had a Muggle technician," she muttered softly. "Perhaps you're familiar with telephones? Computers? The internet? Microsoft? Apple? Nokia?"
The LeMays simultaneously shook their heads, though their eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"We know those things are very useful, but we've never experienced them ourselves—"
"But as for the Muggle technicians you mentioned, I could go capture a few..." Nicolas's straightforward suggestion was cut off by a sharp jab from Perenelle's cane. "Ahem, I mean, we could amicably use the power of persuasion... the charm of language to learn their principles. Of course, to stay legal, we'd Obliviate them afterward."
Jane couldn't help but spare three seconds of sympathy for those unlucky Muggles.
And she deeply admired Nicolas Flamel's enduring spirit of inquiry.
She decided to ask her employees to purchase a large batch of Muggle communication technology books as company perks for the elderly couple.
—And, of course, to bring herself some intellectual nourishment.
"If you succeed in inventing it, you will revolutionize the wizarding world," Jane didn't forget to paint a grand vision for her two technical pillars. "Everyone will carry one of our great creations. Knowledge can be stored on it, and those ancient spells, potions, and alchemy techniques will never be lost. The foundation and culture of wizards will be preserved, and future generations will continuously record and innovate upon it. Magical education in schools will also advance—"
The LeMays simultaneously took a deep breath, looking as if they wanted to live another two hundred years.
The transmission of knowledge... For the elderly couple, it was one of their deepest desires.
Their support for their alma mater, Beauxbatons, was largely motivated by this.
"You're absolutely right, Yu," Perenelle said, wiping her moist eyes. "If young people could have such assistance, each generation would be more vibrant than the last. Our lives might be completely different from what they are now."
"I'll go catch some Muggles... I mean, engage in friendly exchanges with Muggles." Nicolas stood up shakily, attempting to find a suit in his wardrobe. "I must be careful not to let my fingers or limbs fall off in front of them. Sigh, that's harder for me than alchemizing gold—"
Having successfully motivated her employees, Jane closed the two-way mirror with a sense of relief.
But it wasn't even a day later when she received a new piece of news—
The Twenty-third Educational Decree.
