Chapter 30: Acromantula Extinction?
"What happened, Hagrid?" Hermione asked, noticing the worried look on his face.
The trio had come to visit, but something was clearly off. He looked... troubled.
"Do you have a fever?" Harry added, concerned. He exchanged a glance with Ron.
"Did someone complain about your class?" Ron asked, tilting his head.
"No, no, no one's complained," Hagrid replied quickly, though his voice sounded odd. Forced, even. He paused, then sighed deeply.
"It's Aragog," he said. "He says... his descendants are gettin' killed."
"That big spider?" Ron blurted out, eyes wide. The memory hit him instantly. He and Harry had barely escaped being eaten.
Harry felt a shiver crawl down his spine. That was not one of their better nights.
"Are you talking about the Acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest?" Hermione asked. Her tone made it clear she already knew the answer.
She hadn't gone there herself, but her friends had told her everything. Every terrifying detail.
"Yes," Hagrid said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I went to check on him. He told me someone's huntin' his descendants. Pickin' them off one by one."
The trio exchanged uneasy glances.
"So, did you find anything? Like—who's helping slay my enemies?" Ron asked, trying to sound casual, though everyone knew he was the one most terrified of spiders.
"Ron!" Hermione shot him a sharp look, narrowing her eyes.
"I was just joking!" Ron said quickly, hands raised in defense.
Hagrid chuckled a bit. "It's alright. I know you didn't mean it like that."
Then his face turned serious again. "No, I didn't see who it was. But Aragog swears it's a wizard. Not a creature or beast. Someone using magic."
"Someone from Hogwarts," Hermione said immediately, eyes narrowing as the thought clicked into place. "It makes the most sense. Sure, it's not impossible for someone from the outside, but the Forbidden Forest is still under Hogwarts' territory. No outsider would risk provoking Dumbledore unless they had a very good reason."
Hagrid looked at her with a mix of worry and admiration on his face.
"Exactly," he said, nodding slowly. "Yer really sharp, Hermione. That's what I was thinkin' too."
"Is it Snape?" Harry asked immediately. "I mean, he's a Potions Master, and those things could be useful ingredients, right?"
Saying that, Harry glanced at Hagrid, already expecting him to nod. Honestly, if it was Snape, maybe Dumbledore would finally kick him out, and Harry could finish the rest of his school years without constantly worrying about greasy stares and sudden detentions.
Hagrid shook his head. "Nah, not Snape. If it were him, Aragog would've been the first one he went after."
The trio collectively slumped. So much for that hopeful theory.
"Figures," Ron muttered. "Some wishes are just too good to be true."
Harry sighed. "Did you talk to Dumbledore about it?" He couldn't help but remember their first year, when Voldemort was hunting unicorns in the Forbidden Forest. "He might know what to do."
Hagrid shifted uncomfortably. "Can't, really. He's already buttin' heads with the Ministry. Still arguing over the Dementor mess after the Quidditch incident." His eyes flicked toward Harry with sympathy. "I know yer broom's gone, Harry. I'm real sorry about that."
Harry just gave a small shrug. "Not your fault. I wasn't expecting them to throw those monsters at a school match."
Hagrid nodded grimly. "A lot of parents complained after that. That's why the Dementors have been pushed back. For now, at least."
"You mean… they can still come back?" Ron asked, instantly looking uneasy.
"Can't say for sure," Hagrid admitted. "If Black isn't caught soon, the Ministry might send them back in closer. They're not takin' chances with him on the loose."
His expression turned serious as he looked at Harry. "And you. Don't even think about sneakin' out to Hogsmeade. Not even with that cloak of yours. Black's dangerous, Harry. Real dangerous. Don't go thinkin' otherwise."
Harry opened his mouth to argue, but Hagrid cut him off with a look that said he wasn't messing around this time.
Seeing the look on Hagrid's face, Ron stepped in. "So… what are you going to do now? About the spiders?"
Hagrid sighed. "Dunno. I asked the centaurs too, but they haven't seen who's been killin' 'em."
"Can't you ask the Ministry for help?" Hermione suggested. "Surely they wouldn't just let them be hunted."
Ron gawked. "Are you insane? You want them to send those ghost things back already?" he asked, looking horrified.
Hermione rolled her eyes and ignored him, turning her attention back to Hagrid.
But Hagrid shook his head firmly. "No. Unicorns are protected, yeah, but Acromantulas? Not the same. Most folks see them as dark creatures. If the Ministry gets involved, they'll either wipe out the whole colony or sell the bodies off to someone makin' potions with their venom."
His voice lowered. "I know Aragog's kind isn't exactly friendly, but they're still my friends. They like the dark, but that doesn't mean they deserve an end like that."
Saying that, Hagrid looked up at the darkening sky. "Right, you lot should be headin' back now. I don't want you out here when it gets dark. And Harry, don't try sneakin' out of Hogwarts, alright? It's for your own safety."
"Don't worry, Hagrid," Harry said with a small smile.
"Yeah, we'll be careful," Ron added, though not sounding very convincing, remembering his past experience.
"Goodnight, Hagrid," Hermione said as the trio turned to leave.
"Night, kids," Hagrid called after them, watching until they disappeared down the path.
Once they were gone, he turned back toward the edge of the Forbidden Forest, his expression hardening.
"I need to find out who's behind all this... and soon."
