HP: Bad Intentions

Chapter 498: I may have time-traveled more than once

"It seems… I made myself."

Blake looked stunned.

Across from him, Dumbledore and Grindelwald both stood at once.

"In other words," Dumbledore said slowly, "you'll travel back in time someday…"

He frowned. Time travel.

It wasn't just complex—it was dangerous.

Any trip to the past could ripple forward, disrupting the present or future. Even setting aside the world-altering consequences, just surviving it was a risk.

Take the case of that silent witch from the Ministry of Magic. She'd traveled centuries into the past. When she finally returned, her actions had erased at least twenty people from existence. The Ministry had to work overtime to hide the truth.

On top of that, the day she returned, there had only been a few hours of daylight due to a phenomenon later dubbed "zero sixty-three" distortion.

She herself had aged two hundred years during the journey. Even for a witch, the drain on her life force was fatal.

She died shortly after returning.

Dumbledore's expression darkened. If Blake truly intended to go back—even just to Grindelwald's time—he'd be taking an enormous risk.

He turned sharply to Grindelwald.

"You do remember who helped you with those biological experiments, don't you? When the 'failure' occurred… what happened to the person in charge? Did you kill him?"

His voice was accusatory. After all, Grindelwald had been dangerous then.

Grindelwald raised a brow. "Don't be ridiculous. I wasn't in the habit of killing wizards without cause."

"At the time, I saw every wizard as a miracle—a resource worth cherishing."

Dumbledore didn't back down. "Then explain. I want every detail of that experiment."

"Relax," Grindelwald replied. "The 'failure' wasn't as direct as it sounds."

He looked at Blake with a dawning understanding.

"The reason the experiment failed," Grindelwald said slowly, "was because the person leading it vanished—right at the most critical moment."

He stared at Blake now, realization settling in.

Blake was that person.

The one who had disappeared.

Back then, he must've used some form of disguise magic. A strong one, too—enough that Grindelwald hadn't recognized him until now.

Blake broke the silence. "How did you choose me for the role? How did you pick the person in charge of the experiment?"

His voice was serious. "Professor Grindelwald, try to remember as many details as you can. If I really am going back someday, they'll matter."

Grindelwald's demeanor shifted. He pressed his fingers together, thinking.

"It's been a long time," he said finally. "But… I remember I'd just split with this old fool—" he nodded at Dumbledore "—and I was eager to start my grand plan. I needed allies."

"I travelled around, gathering people with shared ideals. Then someone came—you, most likely. He knew my past and proposed a… strange idea."

Grindelwald's gaze flicked toward Dumbledore again.

He had been full of regret then, vulnerable. It hadn't been hard for someone with the right words to sway him.

The experiments had started soon after.

They ran for a long time, with real progress.

Until the lead scientist vanished without a trace.

After that, the project collapsed. Grindelwald was just beginning to search for the missing person when Dumbledore showed up.

The legendary duel began.

Grindelwald lost, imprisoned himself in Nurmengard, and never returned to the lab.

He hadn't thought about any of it again—until Blake showed up.

"I remember now," Blake said softly.

Dumbledore glanced at him, concern on his face.

"Professor, it's inevitable," Blake continued. "I will travel through time. It's already happened—my presence back then is part of history."

"I'll be careful," he added. "You know I'm not reckless."

Dumbledore sighed, but said nothing.

Then he turned to Grindelwald. "How old did Blake seem, back then?"

Even if Blake had used magic to alter his appearance, age could still help determine the timing of his future journey.

Grindelwald pondered this. "He looked young… very young."

Dumbledore's face fell.

That wasn't good. If Blake had been that young, it meant the time travel would happen soon—possibly within the next school year.

"We should prepare him," Grindelwald said, breaking the silence. "We don't know how he manages it, but…"

Dumbledore's eyes widened. A memory surfaced.

McGonagall had once told him something about Hermione Granger. She had asked to take all subjects during her third year—and McGonagall, impressed with her grades, had applied for a Time-Turner on her behalf.

"The Time-Turner," Dumbledore whispered.

"Time-Turner?" Grindelwald frowned. "That thing only allows you to go back five hours… doesn't it? And where would Blake even get one?"

Dumbledore nodded slowly. "Next semester, Hermione Granger—Blake's friend—will receive one. She might share it with him."

"Are you saying," Grindelwald asked, "that Blake might go back in time during third year?"

"Yes."

Grindelwald shook his head. "No… I said he was young, but not that young."

"Still," Dumbledore muttered, "we should be ready either way."

Even if they wanted to stop him, they couldn't.

If they tried… the current Blake might vanish entirely.

Because in a loop like this, where cause and effect are blurred, any interference could unravel everything.

Time… was not something one could truly master.

"Ahem."

Snape's dry cough cut through the room. He pointed toward the biological petri dish.

"If we delay any longer, won't the experiment fail?"

He was clearly annoyed.

It was supposed to be the day little Lily was born—why were they discussing time travel?

Couldn't they finish the experiment first?

"No," Blake replied. "Even if I don't perform the final step, she'll survive for a long time—until the nutrient solution runs out. There's still enough to sustain her for decades."

He paused.

That thought had triggered something.

Decades?

So… she could survive for decades, suspended in that state?

Blake's eyes darkened with a new realization.

"If that's the case… I may have time-traveled more than once."
